It seems to come up a lot in these "How can people possibly hate Sera!?" discussions, that people must hate Sera because they can't make her conform to their/their Inquisitor's opinions, which I feel is entirely untrue. That's not to discount that I'm sure some people actually do feel this way (which is sad), but as someone who is not on the Sera bandwagon, I find it irksome that this statement keeps being bandied around.

After reading through many comments in this thread (and older ones), and from my own personal opinion, it's not at all bothersome that Sera doesn't change her opinions, like MANY of the other companions, but it is bothersome that she insults you for having a different opinion than hers. If you don't think the same way she does, you're stupid and your opinions are invalid which is an extremely immature attitude to have. A lot of people just don't want to deal with that immaturity, myself included. I know I would feel a lot differently about her character if I were able to have a respectful conversation with her about things that we don't necessarily agree on (and can just agree to disagree), but instead I'm 'treated' to an argument with someone who suddenly displays the emotional maturity of a toddler.

Believe me when I say that I keep trying to like Sera's character, and there are moments when interactions with her are almost enjoyable, but more often than not I'm simply left wondering why it is I'm sitting there trying to have a serious conversation about what just happened with someone who's only answer is "Pthhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

That is pretty much the same with Solas. He hardly changes his opinions and disapproves of almost anything that would make sense to anyone but him.

HE wants to kill mages without thinking, and it takes you basically forcing him to back off to get him to change his mind. Same thing with the Wardens, and the Templars.

I simply just try to get everyone's approval as high as possible just because there is no reason to try to argue with any of the companions. you cannot change solas completely, nor Cassandra, nor Vivienne, nor Sera, nor Varric. I think the only who can change his view on the world is Bull, maybe Dorian.

My issue though isn't with companions disapproving of my choices. By all means, disapprove away! My issue is that Sera throws a tantrum when she disapproves of you. I don't feel that Solas does.

Solas gets upset at the wardens. High enough disapproval, and solas does throw a smal tantrum/discussion/gets upset. There is an option in that where you cna hit him. High enough disapproval with Dorian, he decides to leave after Corypheus. They all do things when they disapprove. The only "problem" with Sera is that she is open about the disapproval immediately rather than letting it bottle up like the rest.

All it took was for my guy to say his name and he changed his mind on killing those mages, which is quite remarkable when you consider he has been friends with wisdom for god knows how long.

He can also change his opinion of the dalish and agrees that he should do more to help the elves.

Yes, all companions have Disapproval. That's obvious and I don't think anyone needs it pointed out. However, Solas will consider another's viewpoint and if he thinks it's soundly reasoned, he'll concede and even change his own outlook. Sera will just insist that her way is the only way. Her reaction is based on fear and insecurity, but it's still annoying.

Not a complete 180 on who he is, however, which is my point. Even if you got Sera to change her mind on things, you cannot change her, same as Solas. He will always be they guy who thinks he knows better, same as Cassandra, who will always be a devout Andrastian Seeker. same as everyone else, who has their own personalities and opinions that you can never completely change.

Just accept that she is a fictional character, and she will not bother you anymore.

I'm a bit confused at the point that you're trying to make as you seem to think that I have a problem with Sera disapproving of my choices, which I don't, and I never said that I did. I actually think it's great that every character has their own set of beliefs and I really enjoy the dynamic between the companions and my various Inquisitors who all have their own opinions about life in Thedas.

All of the characters are pretty open with their disapproval/approval, hence the whole companion approval system, as well as the new conversations that open up after you do main quest lines, so I wouldn't say that Sera is anymore open about her immediate disapproval than any of the others. What I would say, and did say previously, is that I don't enjoy how immature and disrespectful Sera is when people have an opinion that differs from her own.

That is her personality, which will never change because she is a VIDEO GAME CHARACTER. Just like Solas is a smart alec, and Cassandra is a loyal/honorable Seeker. I do not fault her for not wanting to accept different views when those views shatter her established views on the world.

Your point was that solas hardly ever changes his opinions. Or at least, that's where I chimed in.

Also I don't think I have ever been under the illusion that sera wasn't a fictional character lol.

His opinions are not taken back. HE states them and that is that. He never changes them, but develops a different opinion based on a differeing view point. He will disapprove of dialogue options that do not mesh with what he wants to hear, same as every other character.

These characters and their opinions are fictional, so they do not exist.

I didn't find her likable, interesting, or amusing, so she sits alone in her room at the inn getting hit on by that godawful bard.

He outright states that he was wrong about the dalish, if the inquisitor is a lavellan.

Well thanks for letting me know that she's a video game character, I would never have known otherwise

You seem to be discounting that I NEVER said that I wanted her character to change, or that I wanted her to suddenly agree with me. All I said was that I dislike how she behaves when faced with someone who doesn't share her same opinion. Since this is a thread asking why people don't like Sera's character, I thought that this seemed like a pretty valid place to share my opinion, much like you are doing.

I'm a simple man, I just find her annoying, both her choice of words and how she says them.

If I passed her in a hallway, I'd probably trip her.

You said you hated that she behaves a certain way. She behaves that way because she is a video game character and designed that way. No way to change it, much like other characters will always be who they are.

What are these words you are saying 'video game character'? You mean to say that Sera is not a real person? Well that's probably a good thing that she is not an actual person because I would probably smack her across the face for treating people with such disrespect about their beliefs. To laugh at someone, who just found out that something they grew up believing meant something special in fact meant something horrible (the vallaslin issue) is just beyond rude and immature.

She believed the elves were stupid for believing tales about the past, and was proven right. it makes sense that she would to the "i told you so" thing.

Alrighty then. . . I still never said I wanted her to change, just that I don't care for her character 'because reasons'

. . .which is the purpose of this thread

You are either completely missing what everyone is trying to express or you are blatantly trying to be ignorant to other's opinion and can only retort with "she is a video game character, she is programmed that way so you can't change her". No one is trying to change her they are just stating why they don't like her in their opinions, which is what the thread was asking.

A thread about why people hate a fictional character? Why hate/have a problem with a character that DOES NOT EXIST in reality? Show me the exact Same Sera in reality, then you can continue hating a FICTIONAL character who DOES NOT EXIST.

Solas will have his same opinions every new game, just like Sera. Who cares that she has a problem with different opinions? She is a fictional character whose behavior and opinions mean nothing in the long run.
