And? Her being a "child" does diminish what she has to say about things or the fact that most of the time there is truth in what she says (even when she is completely oblivious to it).

I was a grade-school teacher for a number of years (changing careers now), and I just find that comment rather hilarious. LOL.

For me? Her selfishness and inability to take anything seriously.

She's grew on me considerably after my first playthrough, however. The speculation around her true identity has turned her into an extremely interesting, if not altogether likable, character.

What's this speculation about her?

I think Sera is a great character. Whether or not my PC agrees has to do with the type of character I am playing. So far I have always recruited her though but my next character won't be recruiting most companions, Sera included.

You could stand being a little less condescending you know...

Sera is a fictional construct in a video game with a background that is unknown. There's a major and very convincing theory that she is the vessel of Andruil, and that would explain her madness and utter confusion about her morality if you paid attention to the lore.

She's the vessel of Andruil. It's REALLY convincing to the point that this is the first fan theory that has ever 100% convinced me. If it's wrong, BioWare would be serious trolls and I would lose all faith in any future fan theories LOL :P

That's certainly an interesting and odd theory. Considering how the Nightmare speaks to her and then solas.

Can you give me a link to the discussion?

There being a convincing explanation as to why she is the way she is doesn't make her any more likable, in my opinion.  That said, I do agree that we should all live and let live when it comes to our companion preferences.  Discussions are interesting, but moreso when they're civil.

A lot of discussions on Reddit, but this post sums them all up rather nicely.

This post in addition to several other Reddit threads and a few elaborations on BSN by Banxey and some others were enough to convince me.

Because she doesn't care about consequences. I find her and Vivienne to be irritating, but with Viv I can play it as understanding that she has a better understanding as to the reality of how the masses work.

I really like the idea of the Red Jenny. I'm predisposed to liking more chaotic characters. As a general rule, I dislike nobility in the game. But Sera, who touts about how much she cares about the underdog, doesn't give a crap about actual people, just the idea of them.

Very much so, there is a lot more to Sera than her immaturity , never mind the fact that her immaturity goes hand in hand with her being the Fool.

Interesting theory about Sera/Andruil. I had missed that so entertaining reads. Not much to add to this discussion, though. The only thing I "hate" about Sera is how hard it is to win her heart when romancing her...

I mostly play Dalish mage, and the "child in a woman's body" trope drives me nuts. Why they have to keep doing that with elven female companions, I don't know. Anyway, that's why I don't even recruit her anymore. Her color commentary was amusing for a while but the brattiness and self-loathing is not something I enjoy listening to.

I've known people that are kind of like her and they are fine- over there, away from me. Where Sera thinks mages should be.

A little less condescending? On the BSN? Never. As I've learned recently, that is the bread and butter here.

I paid attention enough. I am not convinced by that theory, though I understand why some people believe it. The theorists themselves have said that there is lore about Andruil that conflicts with Sera's character.

I am more inclined to believe that her tarot card is meant to be a middle finger to elven lore.

I'm sure Bioware will make something up either way.

If people want to fangirl/boy over Sera, be my guest. You are welcome to like what you like. I am able likewise to criticize her weak character. This thread was posted to find out why people "hate" Sera. I'm expressing views, as requested. I don't actually "hate" Sera. I am more "disappointed" with her. She was advertised as interesting; she is anything but that. Rather boring really.

This Andruil stuff is kind of off the wall. I'm praying to C'thulhu and the Maker that this isn't true, because it would be a bit much. Grab one magical elven orb and suddenly it's some sort of Ancient Elves mixer.

Interesting read but I don't think I can get behind the theory. We know Flemyth has lived many lifetimes. Sera talks about being a child during the blight 10 years ago. When did she come into contact with this "wisp" of Andruil.

There is something off with her, though, especially when you  pair her with Cole and he says that her ears always look in the direction of fade or this one: "She sees the strings that pull me, eyes like raisins in a stale cookie". For the first one you could say that it can potentially apply to all elves, but the second one is too specific.

I'm also pondering about the Fool thing, sure it's about her being immature but Tarot Cards tell the journey of the Fool, there is a potential  there, if tarot where chosen as theme with a purpose that is.

She is the walking living embodiment of chaotic neutral.

http://tvtropes.org/.../ChaoticNeutral

Despite claims otherwise, many people don't like chaotic neutral in action.

Sera is Chaotic Stupid.

Chaotic Neutral people are free-spirited and carefree, yes, but they are not stupid. They do not, for instance, insist on an immediate break up when someone is trying to understand their past heritage. They do not, for instance, believe that there can be only one deity and that the rest are mere BS when we have seen them or seen evidence for their existence.

Well known examples of Chaotic Neutral characters are Captain Jack Sparrow, Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Q, Peeves the Poltergeist, and Wade Wilson / Deadpool. These are extremely likeable characters.

The kind of people Sera reminds me the most of are SJW Tumblrettes. Random pointless insanity and stupidity bundled up into one package.

Harmless enough to beat a man into a bloody pulp simply because he is a noble.

You're kidding right?! That's he reason she beats him to a bloody pulp? Nothing to do with the non-nobles he hurt and murdered?

I didn't recruit Sera. Her introduction sounded to me as deranged as a Charles Manson youtube video. To be honest I didn't understand anything she said.

She is hardly stupid. A teenager running having set up and running that kind of network. She hardly lacks in intelligence. You dislike her personality and you peg her as stupid. People that bandy about the SJW term are ironically have more in common than they would like to admit. Not in their beliefs but in their actions and ignorance.

Because, stupid, punches down, baddies, os biscuit, really real, shite, stupid, punches down. Oh did I sound like Sera? well, there you have her entire dialog for the game and, the reason I detest and, will never recruit her again. ( did it once, never again.)

Seriously?! It saddens me that people can't appreciate the points she is making because of her use of slang and non standard diction. Her dialogue is actually quite profound.

For instance, the dialogue where she uses the phrase "really real" is very interesting. She is pointing out that she, like many religious people in Thedas and the real world, consider religious stories morality tales without assuming that they are literarily true. But, as she points out, if Corypheus is to be believed, then there really is a literal Black City with a literal seat of the Maker. She, like any sane and thoughtful person, is frightened of the implications if all her religion's tales are literarily true.

As to her views on nobles vs peasants, not only is her philosophy sensible, it is far from extremist. She points out that she is part of a far flung informal network of non-nobles who work to fight back against the worst excesses of the nobility. The anonymity and informal hierarchy is clearly meant to protect members from reprisals. And her point about "Red Jenny", that nobles need that mythical figure to convince themselves that mere peasants can never pose a danger to them, is quite profound.

And if you listen to her banter with Solas, you'll see that she's far from extremist. She simply wants to address specific wrongs not overthrow the entire system, because she realizes that whatever replaces it is likely to be just as bad.
