I wouldn't have used the Citadel as the final battle sequence, but I would have used it to enable Shepard to get to the final battle, namely the Dark Relay; the one that links to the Citadel from dark space. I could never understand why this fact was overlooked and discarded over the course of the trilogy; the Dark Relay is the closest thing the Reapers have to a home world, and what better place to hide sensitive/vulnerable assets than in the empty void between galaxies?
Anyone else agree that the last battle should have been on the Citadel?

I could see a final push through the Citadel to to find the AI source Xen was supposed to be on about. You could fight through Purgatory, the Wards etc picking up characters like Bailey and Aria. Squadmates could be used for diversion, over riding Reaper locked areas, sacricining themselves to allow Shep to push on.
Having Garrus or whoever left behind to hold back the Reapers ina reprise of his Archangel role could have been good. Or Liara putting up a biotic bubble to hold up a collapsing section to allow you to get through.
Survival of them could have been tied into EMS or something similar.

very interesting
and what would be there?

The Catalyst for one thing, but really the sheer size of intergalactic space means that anything could be out there. A massive Reaper repair and construction facility, a repository of all the information from every harvested species (makes more sense then putting it in warships on the front lines of conflict) maybe even a rogue planet or intergalactic star could be out in the void making for quite a literal Reaper homeworld/system.
One thing is for sure is that since the Dark Relay is the Reapers' preferred point of entry into the galaxy and it's isolation from the rest of the Milky Way means that the Reapers could, and most likely would, store things of high importance to them in an area that no other species of any of the cycles could conceivably get to.

It would be a better setting than Earth. We are never given a reason why Earth should be the focus of the counteroffensive. The Reapers do eventually move the Citadel there, but that isn't until well after an attack on Earth was planned.

That could be interesting. I like your idea of the Reaper's dark space hideaway being situated near a rogue planet or an intergalactic star. I didn't like the suggestion in Mass Effect 3 that the Reapers had a limitless energy supply, so having them parked pre-invasion near an intergalactic star for example, would explain how they met their energy needs for those 50,000 years. They could be using that star as a battery.

As I mentioned in another thread, have Shepard along with all squadmates go to Ilos. Find out the conduit has enough power for one more use to get to the Citadel. Upon arrival, C-sec and the Citadel forces are seen fighting the uglies and Cerberus. Shepard and squad make their way towards the area to open the arms

I like the idea of the catalyst being in dark space and that you have to utilize the Citadel as a relay to get there, find it's blue box, and take it down. But... What you find there... could be a whole new game with lots of potential for sequels. Nice one @ Vortex13
We don't know what lies within darkspace or what lies beyond it. Passageways to other systems? Time warp travel? A field of giant black holes? God? Eden?
Reaper planets filled with species they'd transformed into themselves, but seeded in their natural forms on new planets?
So much potential.

To OP: I didn't have a problem with Earth being the site of the final battle. I thought it was an interesting parallel, seeing as how Humanity came to the galaxy's rescue at the Citadel vs. Sovereign, and now the galaxy is coming to humanity's rescue (sort of) by coming to Earth. I thought that was a nice parallel. Now sure, I thought there were some parts that I thought could've been done better, but I don't think those improvements include the Citadel.
We've already re-taken it from Cerberus in this game alone, not to mention all the time we've spent on it in other games. We also spent a ton of time on it for fetch quests side missions in ME3, and that's all before we threw a big party on it, and rid it of yet ANOTHER threatening group. We've done the Citadel enough in my opinion, and it's not like we haven't already served the galaxy at large on their home planets.
