I based the general attitude of the clan and their Keeper in particular to that of Mahariel's father, who we are told in DAO was originally the Keeper of that clan and stood up at one of the clan gatherings and tried to encourage others to try and have more contact with humans so they could learn from them. I gather this didn't go down well and was probably why the mother's clan didn't approve of their romance. Clan Lavellan tend to avoid contact with humans simply because it leads to trouble and the Keeper does mention that they wouldn't try and travel to the location of the Inquisition because the hunters of the clan might get into arguments with the humans. However, as Solas remarks, obviously the Keeper at least is more open minded than most in that she did send someone to take an interest in the conclave.
My first Inquisitor was a female mage. My backstory for her had her originally be a city elf child, whose parents asked the Keeper to take her so she wouldn't have to go into the Circle. Basically the opposite of what happened with Minaeve. Whilst this was many years back, she still remembered her time in the alienage and so had a better understanding than most clan members of what to expect and how to act. This was why the Keeper chose her to go. She knew a bit about the Andrastian religion and was prepared to acknowledge the Maker in addition to her own gods. She was generally diplomatic and careful not to antagonise anyone, whilst trying to create a good impression with the humans around her because she knew it could make a difference how elves were treated in the future. She was rather touched by the trust they placed in her after Haven and ultimately was less let down by her human friends than she was by Solas and the revelations she received about the elven gods. She is still trying to come to terms with this information and how she will break it to the clans.
My second Inquisitor is a male Dalish hunter. I actually think it made more sense the Keeper sending him on a spy mission than her first. She picked him over some of the older hunters because he could be trusted not to lose his temper and pick fights with the humans over some perceived slight. He is gay and had not found anyone in the clan of similar orientation so there was no one he was attached to that he was leaving behind. He was used to looking after himself in the wild and so would be safer on his own on the journey to Haven than most other members of the clan. His mission was to study what was going on so he saw playing the part of Herald as part of his initial task as it enabled him to study what was going on with this new human organisation first hand. He also saw himself as a protector of his clan (he has the Vallaslin of Mythal) and in dealing with the Breach and Corypheus he was still indirectly protecting his clan. He was honest with Cassandra that he believed in the elf gods and stood up to Solas when he was belittling his people but he was intelligent enough to keep his cool most of the time. His big hero was Shartan and he could see how people might have called him the Herald of Andraste, so was prepared to accept the title without too much fuss. If anyone had asked him who he thought the woman was in the Fade, he would have said Mythal if he didn't know she was meant to be locked away somewhere. As time passed he became more comfortable with his human companions, greatly admired Cassandra and respected others, trusting their advice to him. Whilst he initially was suspicious of Dorian because of the whole history of Tevinter and conscripted the Templars rather than side with rebel mages who had allied with a Tevinter magister and the Venatori, Dorian gradually overcame his prejudices and of course he ended up in a relationship with him. Bearing in mind how the clans would react to his love, how Dorian would react to the thought of slumming it in the wilds and Abelas telling him emphatically "You are not of my People", he now regards the Inquisition as his clan and has accepted that his ancient ancestors were no better than the humans and probably a lot worse. He still helps his former clan and any other Dalish if he can but he no longer yearns after recovering their lost culture and is working to improve the lot of all elves (supported Briala controlling Gaspard puppet Emperor) and encouraging them to build a new future for themselves rather than trying to recreate something that never really existed. He managed to save his clan so they would appear to becoming integrated with city elves and humans at Wycombe, which pleases him greatly. He plans on attending the next big gathering of the clans in order to pass on the information he has gathered. Whether they believe him or not is their problem; he simply feels he has a duty to pass on what he has learnt. What they do with it is up to them.
