My friend and I think it's a CRIME we cannot romance Varric, particularly if you are a dwarven female Inquisitor.  We think Bioware is a terrible tease.

We also think dwarven Inquisitors (of either sex) should have a race specific LI. Everyone else gets one of some sort.  It's a major omission and it annoys us that elves get all the fun.

Stupid elves.

Whilst I take your point - we should be able to love who we want to love - demons are essentially manipulative evil otherworldly parasites.

Dwarves (while individuals may have some of those qualities) are citizens of Thedas, ordinary people like you and me.  Dwarven Inquisitors need snogs too, and whatever race my Inquisitor, she/he would like to get a go on Varric's chest hair.

It's not *just* the chest hair, he's funny and we've gotten to know him well.

It might have something to do with Gaider's strong dislike for Dwarves. He  thinks of them as small children, the females especially.

Yeah? What's not to love?

I've read about this (and seen the actual post from Gaider) that often it qualifies for the BSN drinking game.

I've been waiting patiently for fifteen years for BioWare to write a dwarf romance. I expect to be waiting patiently for the next fifteen.

(The statistics: counting full romances only, BioWare have made it possible to hook up with forty humans, eleven aliens, eight elves, two half-elves, a Tiefling and a one-eyed Qunari. And zero dwarves.)

I know, I witnessed it... I started a trend. Admittedly... it isn't "my" GIF. I stole it elsewhere.. I probably just use it more LOL.

Donation drive?? How SJW of you.

As a serious aside - I hope the story about David Gaider's opinions aren't true.  Apart from anything else, I know several people in the real world who'd be pretty insulted and very disappointed by that attitude.  And I really hope that's NOT the reason for why dwarven LI's haven't been included.  I choose to believe it's just rumour and speculation.

There is a glimmer of romance at the beginning of the noble dwarven origin story in DA:O but that's all it is.

It's time, Bioware, it's TIME!

P.S. Nothing wrong with Social Justice either. *slaps on badge with pride* ^^

Well... basically, Gaider's post was "taken out of context". Personally, he finds the idea disgusting... something about "fetishes" but then went on to say that he wouldn't be completely against writing a dwarf LI in the future. That's my impression on it, anyway.

Uh... *Zips mouth and backs away, slowly*

I have a sneaking suspicion that Bioware already has DLC plans for Varric given that he's a unique companion in that there's no way to be rid of him.

So maybe the OP could get her wish.

You reckon?

I was thinking along the lines of.. if it hasn't happened before, it won't happen now.

Well I was thinking of Ogren. Remembering some review I read of Awakening where the reviewer bemoaned the fact that of all the Warden's companions, they selected Ogren to appear (guess he wasn't a fan).

But practically speaking, it made perfect sense. Besides Morrigan (who they already had plans for), Ogren was the only companion guaranteed to survive the events of Origins no matter what the player did.

Varric appears to be in similar territory. But it's just my own hunch based on the circumstances.

That may be, but I'm hoping for a morphing Desire Demon companion in DA4 that changes based on your desires. :P

Gaider was making a joke. The problem is that a lot of Bioware fans don't have a sense of humor.

This ^.  He's already stated numerous times that he was responding a single situation where a female dwarf was romancing Alistair and she had a young face and pig-tails and he joked that it felt "eww".  He's also stated that he's not into dwarves himself, but wouldn't be opposed to creating a dwarf romance if it made sense for the character.  The 'fetish' comment was about the idea that people want "a dwarf" or "a lady qunari".  Not specific characters, just any dwarf or any lady qunari.  That's why it's like a 'fetish' (used incorrectly) in that situation.

If a dwarf made sense for a romance, I think they'd add it him.  To be honest, the only dwarves that we've had that played a prominent enough role were Oghren (ew), Sigrun (no romances in DA: A), Varric (already spoken for), Harding (flirt option), and Dagna.

Also, this ^.  Varric's a great character and all, but he's already got a complicated relationship.  I like that a companion isn't fawning all over the PC.  Just like Vivienne and Aveline.  Plus, Bianca doesn't seem the type to share or play nicely with others.......

Even if it's an estranged or forced marriage she still isn't technically in a relationship with Varric.. Plus I don't like her VA at all but that's a bias I carry in many of her games.

Another thing, about the joke -- We haven't seen one in 3 installments, an actual dwarf LI. Given the 'joke' it's reasonable to assume it's accurate. I don't think it's fair to just call us out for poor understanding or "lack a sense of humor" when it's something we read and can easily take it out of context.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be...complicated. And I'm certainly not suggesting the romance be foisted upon you if you don't want it! ;)

However, companions don't fawn all over you if you don't encourage them to do so, in terms of romance anyway.

About 'the joke' - I'm glad there's more to it and he was referring to specific situations.  However, (and I like to think I have a pretty broad and open sense of humour about lots of things) I think it's dipping a toe in some troublesome waters.

Thedas isn't anything like the real world, of course, and I'm not drawing direct comparisions here, but we're all different shapes, sizes, outlooks etc and the suggestion that being attracted to someone outside the 'social norm' is distasteful or a fetish is a bit worrying and deserved a conversation. (Nothing wrong with fetish as such either but that's a different conversation and it's complicated.)

I expect all that was said at the time, but wanted to share my feelings/thoughts, and I'm probably being really crass myself.  Really don't want to cause a ruckus either.

But with regard to Varric - we fancy him because we think he's sexy in lots of different respects, not *because* he's a dwarf.

I just don't get it :( why allow people to play as Dwarves then? If it looks pedophile-y or fetish-y to have a human or other tall race with a dwarf, why is there never another dwarf for your dwarf to romance so they look normal together? Plus I could see some female Dwarves looking too young but no one could mistake Gorrim, Varric, Oghren, etc...for children.

Well, let me clarify that I'm actually a huge proponent of having a dwarf LI in the game.  I play almost exclusively as a dwarf (and now qunari), so I'd love for my dwarves (some of them) to end up with another dwarf.  I don't think there's anything 'fetish' like personally.  It's just that I've seen people misconstrue Gaider's words around this so many times that it's frustrating.  He has gotten fairly defensive (pissy?) about this at times and I'd hate to see it be yet another thing that frustrates him about BSN.  Especially since, if he's frustrated about, he might not even entertain the idea of writing a dwarf romance out of that frustration.  And, to be honest, I'd love for him to write a dwarf, since his characters are always so well done.

To be honest, I have a strong suspicion that the 'flirt' options with Harding were a sneaky way to determine just how popular a dwarf LI would be.  She's physically attractive, has a great personality, and is a bad-ass, so people, naturally, are interested in her.  Now that they see how popular she has been (and how many people are pining for her), I'd be surprised if we didn't get a female dwarf LI in the next game (possibly even Harding herself, as a 'returning companion' and LI).  I would, personally, prefer a male dwarf (short, stocky, hairy guys are kind of my thing.....), but I'd be down either way.  Just my thoughts on it.
