As I have played a mage in all three games I noticed; Everyone knows you are a mage except Templars. In DA:I I am not wearing robes, and my staff looks like a spear. But the horse master points out I am a mage. I walk around and talk to Templars and they don't mention it at all even when I was wearing robes. (I guess the same could be said about Grey Wardens, in Origin everyone knew I was the Warden). As a mage in Awakening it was ok for me to be a Warden but not Anders. In DA2 with all mages being in a prison for mages and those that were not were made Tranqual, I sure had a lot of freedom walking in and out of the Circle there.

So if everyone can tell that you are a mage when they first meet you, what are the Templars not seeing? Just an odd thought coming out of my bizarre mind.

To be fair, Sir Brant and the Templars at Lothering knew that you were a mage but were more concerned with protecting the townfolk and Sir Otto in the alienage likely didn't care being more interested in putting evil to rest. In Inquisition several Templars around haven and elsewhere will note that you are magic if you talk to them but they apparently don't care because apparently you were sent by Andraste herself. I honestly don't know what the deal was with DA2, I was half expecting the first mage play-though I would end up in the gallows for the final section of the game.

Basically, Templars will suck or be awesome at their jobs depending on the current needs of the plot.

Hack writing at its best.

No, no, those Templars aren't blind, they're the only ones smart enough to realise that you aren't a mage.

Most people see a staff when they look at you, but the Templars know that it's really a bow with an ancient Elvhen aiming crystal.

This sums up the Templars perfectly.

They should have added a short-timer detection meter for mages every time you went to a Kirkwall zone during the day a la AC which would go up quickly if you cast any spell or walked by a Templar.

Oooh they could have made navigating the Gallows have a Commandos-like mini game where you had to stay out of the cone of sight or you'd get caught.

If you fight back, you gain Templar Emergency points that escalate gradually to a max of 5, eventually bringing in Qunari merc dreadnoughts to catch you if you continue to cast spells and didn't hide for 10 minutes. GTA did it so can DA.

Would have been funny to see the QQ on BSN.

Mages are like weed in the Dragon Age world, the templars will enforce the law whenever they see fit, otherwise it's too petty for them to bother lifting a finger.

Oh God yes! I find it so bizarre when I hear people say that DA2 worked best when playing mage Hawke. Being a mage makes the plot bat crazy.

There's a quest in act 1 where you investigate a missing Templar. Why an apostate trying to avoid detection by the Templars would do that is beyond me, unless they're the ultimate Paragon. There's no in game explanation for why Hawke had to investigate either but you can't complete act 1 without doing it.

You even end up outing yourself by battling demons (with magic obviously ) in front of a Templar, but they don't seem to care.

Nonsense like that was why my attempt at a 2nd DA2 playthrough before DAI was aborted pretty quick. I couldn't find any way to RP a Hawke that made sense with the plot as it was...

You really think at least one person would have noticed Mage Hawke slinging fireballs around in the streets of Kirkwall in broad daylight...

Do what I do.

Only use quick non-AOE spells when they aren't looking like Hex of Misdirection and Spirit Bolt. Otherwise, use melee attacks.

There. No need to RP. You only need to do it in Act 1, and only in front of Templars or in the intro.

Alternatively, download the invisible staff mod which makes your weapon disappear when sheathed.

Nothing else indicates you're a mage. Clothes don't count, as even non-mages wear robes.
