Heya! I'm still only on my first playthrough, but I've started thinking about what to do for my next one. I decided to go as a sword and shield warrior, mainly because Avenger is the most beautiful weapon in the game, but I loathe dealing crap damage, or feeling like dead weight. If any of you can give some advice on how to make a build that fits the description I'd be grateful. Bonus points if it includes the templar spec.

Damage>survivability>party support

I know what you mean by the sword and board thing, I guess you just have to keep reminding yourself that your there more to keep the melee fighters off your mages/archers and to keep them busy, not so much to do heavy damage.

As to what to play next, I'd probably recommend rogue/archer.  Mage can be awesome once you get the hang of them but rogue/archer is a little easier and if you feel the need to wade in toe to toe you can always re-spec and go two handed for a while before switching back.   At high levels two handed is beyond deadly, it's really quite sick..

Avenger is not so good, there are better weapons but maybe you are still mid game

General help:the weapons you can craft are better than the ones you find

Templar spec help in attack with 3STR and 6WILL (4.5% attack)

To have good damage you need runes. Runes help you to have damage close to 2H weapons because their damage is "on hit" and 1h weapons attack faster than 2h--->runes help more on 1handed than 2handed

If you are not the tank in the team you can craft everything to have more damage (attack/strenght/willpower) because you get enough defense from the shield and from S&S tree (damage reduction)

your abilities should be

1-Payback Strike (knockdown)

2-Shield Bash (vs guarda and to detonate combos)

3-Loung and Slash (to close gap and damage)

4-Wrath of heaven (Aoe Stun)

5-Spell Purge (combo with Wrath of Heaven vs large groups of weak enemies)

6-Grappling Chain (to catch a single enemy)...you can't skip this but you have to take it anyway because you need to have 4 passive abilities of Battlemaster's tree.

7-Challenge (again you can skip this but you have to take passive on that side od the tree..also with Cutting words you raise your damage vs taunted enemies)

8-Rally (Templar's focus ability)...you need this vs bosses since you don't have Unbowed (best ability to get guard)

I would craft my weapon with 5 guard on hit or heal 1% of masimum HP on hit.

Best weapon is Seprent's Rage (crafted from schematic found in the Hissing Wastes)

dps? --> reaver

heal on hit and heal on kill items

hidden blades on hit items

dragon rage, devour, rampage, charging bulld, unbowed, combat roll, payback strike, lunge and slash.

also, take 2-hander passives if possible.

I don't normally respond to strategy & builds, but I've been playing a DPS oriented warrior, so I'll give you my 2 cents.

DPS warrior is all about mobility on the battlefield.  Move in, perform combos and get out.  Very similar to DW rogue, just nowhere near the damage output.  You aren't built to take a lot of punishment, so don't 'try' to take punishment.

Combat Roll is vital and honestly.. fun to use.  Gracefully dodging fire attacks and big hits is quite satisfying.

Grapple chain and the knock down is absolute CLUTCH.  It's buggy.. will sometimes miss or grab the guy 'next to' the guy you wanted to grapple, but when done correctly will seriously save your mages bacon, and again.. allows YOU to move around the battlefield and STILL protect your squishies without sitting on top of them.

I usually try to fit "challenge" into my build to 'off tank' and taunt baddies away from my mages when the main tanks taunts are on cool down.

Weapons:  Mace or Axe - they are faster animations/attack times, thus higher DPS.  Sadly - sword is not optimal for a DPS spec.

+ Guard is 'great' and you can certainly go that route, but your main objective is to NOT get hit to begin with.  I use + Crit gear, and take the critical and flank passives from the 'other' warrior tree ( forgot the name, but same tree you get the grapple/knock down chain )

Shield Bash - must have.  It's your main detonator for combos.  Lunge & Slash is also a detonator and seriously improves mobility.  I don't use payback strike.  You don't want to get hit, and this power is best used 'after' you get hit.  I skip slotting it, and don't miss it at all.

You can slot blessed blades, but the AOE ring prevents mobility, so I prefer War Horn for the 35% damage buff.  Fire it off just before entering battle.  Refresh as needed.

Agree with Mirth on that one, I do love combat roll from Battlemaster, especially the upgrade that allows you to shrug off negative effects like stun or chill.  Nothing better for dragon hunting IMHO.

I've built my weapon and shield templar as a dpser. Spell purge + Wrath of Heaven is a must, Personally I run

Shield wall

Lunge and Slash

Shield Bash

Payback strike

Grappling chain with upgrade

Charging bull with upgrade

Wrath of Heaven

Spell Purge.

For dragon fights, I swap out wrath of heaven for combat roll since dragons are immune to physical effects and the dodge from roll is very good to avoid the dragon's breath and other attacks.
