A good soundtrack can really make or break the atmosphere in a game and turn a great game into a legendary one, so what are some of those games that you felt had a truly exceptional soundtrack that really gave the game that extra edge?

Since this thread has been made before, I'm just gonna copy-paste the answer I made in the previous one.

Metal Gear Solid 1-3 & Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid 2 probably had the most solid soundtrack out of them all next to 3
It generally consisted of neat blues, jazzy tunes that neat fit with that eerie atmosphere of the Big Shell.

- Best is Yet to Come

- Strut A Pump Room (Dat contrabass)

- Tanker Incident (Alert Phase -- Best Alert Phase)

- Debriefing

- Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday

- Snake Eater

- Heaven's Divide
_____________________________________________________________________________

Silent Hill Series, specifically 1-4 (Akira Yamaoka) -- Yamaoka is a master and he made the soundtrack as great as it was

- Promise

- Promise (Reprise)

- Theme of Laura

- Heaven's Night

- Letter - From The Lost Days (Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is a good singer)

- Melancholy Requiem
____________________________________________________________________________________
Persona series - Shoji Meguro is one of a kind; Blending everything from rock to jazz, hip-hop tunes, blues and even J-pop and still manages
to capture almost any raw emotion of the youthful spirit that is series -- Ultimately resulting in an excellent soundtrack. Always.

- Burn My Dread

- Master of Tartarus

- Mass Destruction

- Castle

- Time to Make History

- Corridor

- The Almighty
________________________________________________________________________
The Longest Journey & Dreamfall -- Simon Poole & other composers created the themes for these great adventure games

- Dreamfall Theme

- Marcuria and the Northlands

- Don't Just Say
________________________________________________________________________
Hitman series -- Jesper Kyd is excellent and I remember his tracks for Blood Money the most

- Rocky Mountains

- Night Time in New Orleans

- Vegas
________________________________________________________________________
Psychonauts -- Peter McConnell's blues-sounding guitar accords of Camp Whispering Rock was sold me
Along with anything else about this game. At times, it reminded me a bit of the Sly Cooper soundtrack which was neat.

- Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp

- A Mind of Bauhaus Principles

- Asylum of a Bygone Age
________________________________________________________________________
Knights of the Old Republic 2 -- It was one of the first western-RPGs I got into at the time since I was a fan of Star Wars
It felt so unlike John Williams, so unlike Star Wars, there was a neat atmosphere to it, and yet.. it still sounded like Star Wars

Rebuilt Jedi Enclave

- Peragus Mining Facility (This was one was my favorite due to the atmosphere it creates for the abandoned mining facility - Love it)

- Dantooine

- Valley of the Dark Lords
_____________________________________________________________________________________
BioShock series -- The first game had some very memorable ones it was also the stronger of them all -- Best atmosphere

- Cohen's Masterpiece

- Welcome to Rapture

- Dancers on a String
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Kingdom Hearts series -- This franchise has pretty much sold it with its music

- Cavern of Remembrance

- Deep Anxiety

- The 13th Struggle

- Organization XIII

- Halloween Town (ak.a. best Disney World in all the games)

- Dearly Beloved (KH2 version)
____________________________________________________________________
Sly Cooper series -- Specifically the second game

- Paris

- Wine Cellar

- Dance with Carmelita

- Prison

- Contessa's Castle
___________________________________________________________________
The Witcher 2 -- The game had a neat soundtrack going for it with that Eastern European feel to it

- Blue Mountains

- A Tavern at the Riverbank

- Flotsam at Sunrise
__________________________________________________________________
Valkyria Chronicles

- A Moment of Relief

- Battle

- Chronicles of the Gallian War

- Desperate Battle (Love this one)

- Farewell and Tears
___________________________________________________________________
Fire Emblem: Awakening

- Id - Beginnings

- Don't speak her name!

- Duty

And the list just goes on -- Lots of good game music out there for certain..

I've recently been on a Quake rampage and I nominate Quake 2 (my first ever PC game) as having one of the most badass soundtracks ever made(fitting for one the greatest games of all time).

Yeah.

Persona 3's soundtrack was everywhere.

And it was still freaking awesome.

Hell, the opening is enough to get a feel of just how great it is.

Apart from the ones everybody always says, I really liked the soundtracks to the Ace Combat series. As far as I'm concerned, there aren't any better 'epic' tracks in the world - not Two Steps From Hell, not Audiomachine, not the Mass Effect 2 End Run, and not even Gustav Freaking Holst. Those are all awesome, but if I'm exercising and need some pump-up music, I want me some Keiki Kobayashi.

I think I gave you a like for KotOR 2 that time, too. Peragus... <3

FES's opening is pretty cool, but did you watch the original opening? That one is a bit better, very foreshadowing and less spoilery than the former.

My all time favorites are Hitoshi Sakimoto's work for the Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story soundtracks. His orchestral style meshes well with the theme of the cutscenes they're paired with, and compliments the mood/tone of the levels/battles without it seeming like they're out of place regardless of the genre of the track. VG's techno cathedral track being a prime example.

Definitely Mass Effect 3 is #1 in this category for me. ME2 had a great track with Suicide Mission but ME3 is just chock full of awesome music.

Leaving Earth, the Krogan Theme, The final piano piece o Citadel's "An End Once And For All", all great tracks and well worth listening to, even outside the game.

Also, the Assassins Cred series has a consistently good OST. Especially Assassins Creed 2 stands out.

The Modern Warfare series also has some a great score (at least part of it is composed by Hans Zimmer, I believe).

And yet another one: The Deus Ex series, with its dark and moody score. I'd say Human Revolution has the most consistently high quality Music but special kudos goes to Deus Ex 1 for its main theme (main menu music) and even Invisible War had some great re-interpretations of DX1's tracks.

Most of the older Squaresoft stuff. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger were the standouts. I have never before or since felt the chills I did when first playing through the opera misadventure in FFVI. The use of music there was flawless. Nicely composed, emotive, broadcast the nuanced personality quirks of the characters involved... all through melody as much as, if not more than text. Then Setzer crashes the party with his usual dashing flair and you hear his theme for the first time.

I can count so many awesome soundtracks (my gaming music CD collection is extensive), but very few really feel like they add another dimension to a game beyond just being nice to listen to.

Not all of these tracks are meant to be great on their own, but within the game and within it's context, it provides some awesome moments.

The music is simplistic, yet it makes the scene a whole lot better in the finale.

Beyond Earth might not be the best Civilization game. But the atmosphere and ambiance is just fantastic. Pretty much all of Civ:BE's music givs you a sense of wanderlust.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution's got some awesome cyberpunk music running for it. Makes everything feel more cyberpunk. I never asked for this, but I always wanted it.

A bit of Bonnie Tyler did wonders for SR3.

The first Witcher game had some of my most memorable, atmospherically pretty tracks, IMO. Hella relaxing tbh.

TW3 might topple it with that glorious Slavic influence, though.
