The argument is essentially you have to have a character creator and companions to be considered any way similar to DA. It's ridiculous. Anyone with half a brain can see that TW has more in common with DA than say, Final Fantasy. Yet by those incredibly strict standards FF would be considered closer to DA by virtue of having a party. Or TW would have more in common with No More Heroes because you play as a single, set character. You knew all that though, and are just being facetious.

I'm actually astonished i'm getting so much resistance just for saying the two are similar.

To be fair from a mechanics standpoint the games actually play very differently from each other. I wouldn't consider setting and being open worldish to be enough to go on to claim that much similarity between two games. Even being in the same genre isn't much considering it's the one that everybody takes elements of these days and most of us can't even agree on what a RPG really is.

I mean it's absurd to say "It's similar to X game because they both have fixed protagonists" but the original claim kind of came off as "They're both fantasy RPG with jerk Humans, so they're similar" which I also find to be a pretty silly claim.

I never said they didn't have their differences. The differences are what make TW (in MY opinion) the better, more enjoyable franchise. I said the similarities outweigh the differences. Gameplay mechanics are a part of it, but so are the setting, storytelling etc. Yes, these too have their differences, but they also share a great many similarities as well. If you want to simplify it into a single sentence and claim it's silly though, go ahead. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

FTFY.

This entire discussion is weird. Obviously everyone has preferences and enjoys something over the over.

So far I've barely seen any reasonable objective arguments on why one game is better than the other.

That's only really applicable to do for their shared characteristics. Considering that the games have vastly different structures and intended gameplay purposes and priorities, there's a lot more nuance to the whole issue than many here imply.

It's not a simple X > Y deal.

For instance, DAI focuses heavily on companions and interactions with them. Obviously a major part of the story has to do with interacting and developing relationships with them. That's almost completely absent in The Witcher. On the other hand, The Witcher is far more capable of providing a tighter storyline due to the fact that it has a fixed protagonist with a fixed purpose.

What is technically more fun? That obviously varies between players.

So let's just settle on both games being great at their own thing and end this tedious debate shall we? :)

The discussion was never really about which one was better, it was about them being similar and CDPR being healthy competition for Bioware. And there was no reason to "fix" my post. I quite clearly stated "In MY opinion."

They share a genre that's already loosely defined. That's where the similarities end.

So do games that are part of the sports genre but you don't see anyone comparing NFL to FiFA games unless they've got some serious hardcore perspectives.

And there was no reason to "fix" my post. I quite clearly stated "In MY opinion."

There's a difference between:

The differences are what make TW (in MY opinion) the better, more enjoyable franchise <----assumes opinion applies to others

and

The differences are what make TW (in MY opinion) the better, more enjoyable franchise for me. <--- understands opinion applies to self

The former implies that The Witcher is a better enjoyable franchise to yourself as well as others

The latter implies that The Witcher is a better, more enjoyable franchise for yourself and yourself alone

No nitpicking intended, but the overall tone of this thread does not make me optimistic about people's intent when stating their opinions.

true the hate on TW and CDPR is pretty strong here
but its similar on the tw forums (I'm there quite often) they always see Bioware games as inferior
compared to the Witcher

I like both too but I think TW2 is better than DA2 and DA I
though DA O owns them all

Not really, you're just being needlessly pedantic, like everyone else in this thread. Shame really, you're usually one of my favourite posters. I'm done with this particular topic, everybody is too confrontational and anally retentive.

I just heavily dislike The Witcher / DA debates. There's never any resolution in sight.

Let him go, he's been insistent that the problem is everyone else and not him. No reason to stop him from leaving the debate.

Perhaps I came on a little too strong. This thread has just been one hot mess.

This thread was going to cause fights, the title makes that clear. Had it been something like "Why do you think DA:I won GOTY?" it likely would've been less confrontational. There still would've been arguments, this is BSN afterall, but the title "Did Bioware get lucky with DA:I?" pretty much puts poster in two camps from the get go, and forces them to defend their position against the opposition.

Exactly. Phrasing is important. The thread's title heavily implied hostility towards DAI's success and this tone has permeated throughout the thread.

In the same manner, a vague statement or opinion's intent is often easily misconstrued.

So, let´s go and leave this sorry place, ladies and gentlemen. Our invaluable opinion is needed elsewhere. ;)

More like wait until Mass Effect 4 comes out.

Here's a friendly tip: if you find yourself thinking "The problem isn't me, it's everyone else in this thread", then the problem is probably you.

I just find it funny that he seriously seemed to get offended about people here getting irritable at him after he kept going on about how TW3 will be "superior in everyway" when compared to DA

Last I heard, it was meant to be coming out in 2016 and/or When It's Ready, which I imagine will be well after The Witcher 3 releases. Is there any particular reason to think that it's vanished into the ether?

(I don't really care either way - I'll keep an eye on the project, but the teaser trailer suggested that I'm not the target audience, so I'm not getting my hopes up.)

The expectations regarding The Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity seem to be so high to some DAI detractors that I wonder how marvellous that games shall be in order to please everyone.

I think those games will be as good as DA:I is, but IMHO that the people thinking that these games will revolutionize RPGs and/or video games in general are setting themselves and the games for a MAJOR fall.

In Witcher you can't create a character and it have even more action.

But since Witcher is disapointing since the first one and prevented me from liking the series, it is superior.
Pretending to be RPG to become action like Dragon Age did is unforgivable.
So, The Witcher wins, hands down.

I don't think luck has much to do with it.  Frankly, the game was obviously paid off.  Reviewers completely failed to mention a plethora of issues the game had, and weak year or not it was definitely not GotY worthy.  Wolfenstein, Shadow of Mordor, Dark Souls 2, Stick of Truth, and Bayonetta 2 were each fantastic games which could have easily taken the title.  But then it was also the year of the indie with a lot of great, smaller budget games which came out and blew away AAA gaming.  Games like Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2, Transistor, Child of Light and Shovel Knight.  Hell, Wolf Among Us I thought blew away the Walking Dead season which won so many GotY awards.  2014 doesn't stand out as showing how lucky Inquisition was, but how corruptible gaming journalism has become.

I'd say they were lucky. Game was good, but not great.
