Of all the games I played in the past year this was the best. 2014 was a bad year for games though really so was 2013 . so far 2015 isn't looking good either aside from witcher 3 nothing has that I need to buy this epeic game vibe yet. So I don't think Bioware got lucky I think gaming's just gone down hill every year for the past 5 years. Games like destiny and cod with stupid online killing are all todays kids want so it's just going to get worse. Look at evolve for example no story just run around and kill stuff online.
Did Bioware get lucky with DA:I?

Super Smash Bros? seriously?
I agree about a few though (like Shadow of Mordor) still pretty lame compared to 2013 or this year
Yes seriously. It's one of the highest rated game on the wiiu and is a system seller. Just because you don't like does not mean it's a huge game. It even has a higher general review tall the dai.
Also, 2013 was the same level as this year.

And yet you comparing apples to oranges. tw games and the bw games have different goals. BW games for a good potion of the game let you pick what places and quest you do in any order you like. The witcher game just stick you in one place focus more on the environment on hand for the player. The witcher game let the player work with less to have more details while bw game work with more to give players a feel of more freedom. Ironically, bw does character better then the witcher teams. It's like compering grand theft auto to uncharted.
I agree Bioware's strongest strength is writing good characters (I basically like almost every companion/squadmate in the ME and DA series)
Also I think that the games while still different can still be compared both have a focus on story and characters (unlike Skyrim or Fallout)
thats why comparing these games to them would be wrong your comparison "grand theft auto to uncharted" works only then

It certainly not GOTY for me. No tactics, simplified skilltrees, 8 abilities limit, MMO fetch quests and basically it's more of an action RPG than a party-based RPG. The only thing that they did right was the lush, huge beautiful world with lots of exploration.

The gta to unchated works because bw let the play pick how the story progress for most of the game like how in megaman you can pick what level you want to play first. After the intro you get to go near any where you want. Example, in dao you can go to recliff village first instead of the circle, or even go to orzammar first and etc. It's pretty hard to set thing up so that what a player does effects what happen another place in the world when the place can choose where you go to next. The witcher games don't have that. The plot decides the places you go and you can't move on till done what is required to move on and even than your stuck there till you do the same thing. In place of that the result of your actions have more details and reactions to the story. But the still boil down you you getting to the same result and goal.

I don't really pay attention to awards or most professional reviewers, anymore, so none of that makes any difference to me.

Their plenty of tactics, the skill trees are far from simplified. But I'm only with you on the 8 ability limit but it's workable.

Why aren't they GOTY material? Does not being an RPG of some sort disqualify them?
FWIW, I'd love to be surprised by a CoD. Just because it's usually awful doesn't mean it has to be awful. Modern Warfare 1 was a pretty great game, even going by single player.

It doesn't have anything to do with them not being RPG's
games like GTA V, The Last of Us, Skyrim and Uncharted 2 won many GOTY's in the years they were released
GOTY has to be special and deliver (be it story or open world or whatever)

Or gameplay. I don't see why a perfectly implemented platformer, fighter, or racing game (or any other genre) is any less worthy of being named GOTY.It doesn't have anything to do with them not being RPG's

Here you go.
The 5 stages of grief of a DA:I hater:
- Denail: I am afraid there will be no more Dragon Age games because Inquisition was such a failure. It got 0.2/10 on metacritic and no one bought it.
- Anger: Damn you Bioware! You lied to me! The things I saw from pre-alpha footage shot by a non-Bioware employee on their cellphone didn't end up in the final game a year later. You are history's greatest monster !!11!!one!!!
- Bargaining: Ok maybe Inquisition was a financial and critical success. But it only won eleventy billion "Game of the Year" awards because there was no competition. If you had released a reproduction of my rose-colored recollection of Dragon Age: Origins, it would no doubt have deserved all the GOTY awards it would have won.
- Depression: [gentle wheeping as Taylor Swift songs play in the background]
- Acceptance: I have come to realize that, despite the fact that Dragon Age: Inquisition was not designed specifically to apeal to my sensibilities, it is nevertheless a good game that deserves the financial and critical success it has achieved.
I like everything about this post except the spelling.

I would hardly say 2013 was a bad year. The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, and GTA V were all great titles that came out in 2013.

Let me check my crystal ball. Unless a end of world event happens, I am pretty sure there will be angst somewhere because "it was a bad game" or "my favorite game is better". For me I didn't like The Walking Dead, but I don't care that it got GOTY awards, I was perfectly happily enjoying the games I liked that year.

Those were the only well received games of that year.

yeah but TW2 didn't have this much hype

That really shows the divide between players and their personal tastes, now The Last of Us was a good game, but the other two you listed I didn't care for at all. BioShock: Infinite was far worse then Dragon Age: Inquisition for there was more marketing hype that was untrue and the game turned into a standard FPS with horrible mechanics by the end and well GTA just isn't my thing.

. Witcher 2 was hyped to hell and back as the must own pc game to have. And game with much less hype have won game of the year awards.

It really depends on what you like and don't like. I had friends all enjoy the following games and recommend them to me and I am pretty sure there are people that enjoyed some of the offerings from Nintendo this year as well.
The Wolf Among Us (eps 2 to 5), South Park: Stick of Truth, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Wasteland 2, Alien Isolation, Assassin's Creed Rogue for the big developers
Shovel Knight, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Divinity Original Sin from the smaller developers.
