It's obviously early and they haven't released much, but damn this looks cool. I didn't realize it until just now, but I DO need a game that's a mash-up of NWN, BG, and DAO in my life.

Oh man, between this and DAI and Kingdom Come: Deliverance I'm going to be neck deep in RPGs all year. Let alone if I decide to pick up Witcher 3, Pillars, Torment, D:OS...

What, like someone pausing it to go take a bathroom break or something?

That, and of course if you give the trolls a tool this great they're gonna use it =P

To be honest though I can see even just different people pausing at different frequencies causing some arguments as well. I know I personally use the pause in Dragon Age games a lot less than most people on these boards do.

It's the kind of thing that can work, but you need to be really careful about how you implement it. It wouldn't take much to become an annoyance to a lot of people very quickly.

I can see that. Then again, controlling one character is much different than managing an entire party.

I do like the BG method bEVE mentioned of auto-pausing it after every turn, letting anyone take any action, the resuming things until the turn is over. Makes it still the methodical and tactical way that D&D really works but still doesn't drag the game to a crawl, nor does it allow someone to repeatedly spam the pause button to be a jerk.

I would hope a DM override in such cases might be useful, though.

It looks and seems very much like an updated version of Baldur's Gate with the much needed polish. With an updated UI to boot, this might turn out to be a treat.

I also agree with 'archav3n'. It would be nice to play a game that wasn't plagued with some console compromise.

In addition to former Bioware employee Dan Tudge, the game's Narrative Director is also a Bioware-alum, Jay Turner:

I'm Jay Turner, Narrative Director for SCL. I'm also writing the majority of the story, dialogue, etc. for the game, along with help from our leads team and our designers on the project. We're working closely with Wizards to make sure the story is aligned with the Forgotten Realms and as awesome as everything else you see what that legendary imprint.

For my credits, I've worked on Jade Empire, all three Mass Effects, Dragon Age: Origins, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, and Dead Space 3. I've also been playing D&D since I was but a wee lad, and running it (and other tabletop RPGs) for more than 20 years.

We've got an awesome team and an insanely awesome game, and I think you guys will be pleased with what we're putting together. Thanks for your interest!

I saw this thanks to ZAM.  I have to say, I am greatly interested in this, and if I had money loaded up on my card, I would've already pre-ordered the game.

Having a pause button like that for anybody to use does bring up some big concerns for me in a multi-player environment, especially if you're going to allow for public games with randoms.

I almost think you'd just be better off just disabling the pause button entirely in that case.

Most turn based games on multiplayer has a timer. The whole team can't be waiting for that guy when he uses his toilet like for an hour right? Or there might be options to vote kick that player.

My thoughts on this is the same I've had on other threads here recently:

Bioware forums are very much different today, than they used to be before DA2 and ME2.

Look at the lack of response here in this thread. Look at the predominance of Anime-avatars.

Then I could say other things as well, but they are not in good forum spirit, so I won't.

Fact remains, tons and tons of people have left.

...For some reason.

I don't want to think that it's the newer games that have driven them away. They haven't driven me away. But two things which could have driven me away, back in the past years, were EA's moderators and DA2-provocateurs.

Think it's just that we can have our own avatars now...

Just sayin'

Personally, I welcome lack of response, 'cause alternative will be fanboys/girls invasion with statements like: "Get over DAO, already!", "You all stuck in the past"... and so on and so forth..  ^_^

Why are those statements stuck to only people that are "fanboys/girls"?

As for the game, I have a feeling it will be multiplayer only without a singleplayer aspect. So don't get your hopes up if you're someone that despises multiplayer games.

I'm interested but cautious about getting too optimistic. I love D&D and things like it, and really want more D&D games, but I feel like, personally I want either 1 or 2 things.

1.) A full-on Baldur's Gate esque adventure with companions and a single-player story (not necessarily utterly old school gameplay wise, just in scope. Like...a Bioware game! Like...I want writers involved and a lengthy, hefty, single-player experience with party control and deep mechanics (though I also think there MUST be concessions for it being a video game - Temple of Elemental Evil and Baldur's Gate played SO damn slow because it seemed like they just took the rulebook and plopped it into a video game. BG2 was a little better cuz you were at a higher level, but still slow, I thought.

OR

2.) I want another Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance style game. A little less hectic than Diablo but similar in style. I think a pulled back action rpg would be SO much fun with the D&D license if they put the time, money, and effort into making it a good one. I'd want it single-player/co-op (local and online) interchangeable. So, say, a 4 character party where you control one and then either have other players' characters and/or AI characters.

I'm not convinced Sword Coast Legends is going to do either of these things. It looks hack and slashy to me which can be okay (if going route no. 2), but I'm worried that they foreground the multiplayer so much...I'm an antisocial gamer. If I had friends into D&D, I'd play actual D&D with them. If I'm playing a video game, I at least want the option to be left alone and immerse myself.

Time will tell. Ultimately, it's going to depend on how well-developed the single-player campaign is. I liked NVN, for instance, but got bored real fast with only one companion who never talked and a story that never really grabbed me. I liked NWN2 way better in that regard (except for how freaking impossible it was to play because of how buggy it was omf GOD it made me mad). Anyway...single-player campaign will determine my interest.

Mine isn't an Anime avatar... It's a JRPG avatar ^_^

But I'm wary of this game since it's using 5th edition.  The only experience I've had with this edition is Neverwinter and that crushed my love for the previous two games and their superior expansions.

I think you are confusing third edition with fifth edition. Fifth edition just came out in late 2014. This is the first game to use the edition that I'm aware of.

I was never a huge fan of the top down isometric perspective. Also, the footage and images do not show any dialog.

It says "DM mode" with "customizable adventures", but doesn't say "toolset". There was mention of a tileset in the feature list of one of the game's versions, so maybe there is a toolset they just "forgot" to announce?

Other than that, I'm totally jacked about this. I will be quite pleased if it is just a graphically souped up version of NWN with the new DnD v5 rulset, if it has all of NWN's other features.

Was excited/looking forward to a game with the 5th edition rules  when i saw the title then i read the OP.

Tbh the mmo feel of the combat and look of the game plus heavy focus on multiplayer makes me going from excited the disgusted, no way for a new D&D game to go, only hope now is if the campaign is very well done otherwise meh.

Nope. The Neverwinter MMO. Not Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2.

Whoops... it's 4th edition sorry. I... blame the heat in Australia.

Now it's peaked my interest.

The concept seems really neat. If they can pull it off and make a satisfying game they would be able to fill a niche that I don't think RPGs have been able to fill yet: Taking your friends on unique adventures and getting the chance to screw with them. I'm kind of glad they chose to make it real time, I feel that they have a chance to reach a much wider audience with that style of game over turn based.

I'll be keeping an eye on this, but I don't have my hopes high that it'll be any good. The gaming industry has had too many flops as of late to have any hope that a game might actually turn out good.

I just loaded my last saved game in NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer from February 2013, last night.

I think that's more interesting to play (the only thing which is annoying in it is your soul-meter which worries you much).

Looks good to me. I remember when I first installed Origins I thought to myself, "Holy ****! It's NWN with updated graphics!" This game looks like its trying to evoke both of those titles.
