*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I am currently role-playing a Femquisitor rogue and having a lot of fun.  I really want to keep going in the story but I am not sure which side (mages or templars) to take.  This is not a typical "mage vs templar" topic or trying to get the "perfect" ending, I am RP'ing my Femquisitor and would like your thoughts on which side fits best for her backstory and mode of thinking.  Unlike my other character, with my Femquisitor I am not planning anything out, just taking what comes and staying in character rather than trying to min/max a perfect epilogue.  I appreciate it!

Her backstory: Youngest daughter of the Treveleyan family, she has always broken the mold.  She grew up like any child in nobility was, being taught how to be proper and "ladylike" (why she can navigate through the Orlesean ball so well), but she was also rebellious, sneaking off into the woods to practice archery/rogue stuff and leaving home for weeks and months at a time to survive on her own.  She made a game out of evading the patrols the Treveleyan family would send out to find her.  She doesn't hate her family, she loves them personally but hates how they let politics and nobility power struggles dictate their lives.  She knew staying at home would result in her being forced into an arranged marriage, so instead she left with the Treveleyan caravan to attend the Conclave.  She was never overly fond of religion, she didn't believe or disbelieve, she is perfectly neutral when it comes to religion.  She has nothing against the religion of the Chant of Light, but she sees the Chantry as a failing institution that needs reform or needs to be changed completely.

Her thoughts on Mages vs. Templars:

- She doesn't hate either.  They both have a lot of faults, and a few redeeming qualities.  The Templars were abusing their power and the Mages were going crazy.  Its all a mess.

- There is no place for the Templar order in a post-Breach world.  There is no denying this in her mind.  The Templars as an order have failed.  Whatever succeeds them will have to be new and evolve to the changing circumstances.  (If she sides with the Templars, disbanding the Order and having them pledge themselves to the Inquisition is the only option).  She realizes the "real" Templars (the ones not running around the Hinterlands killing everything that moves) could be brought into the fold of the Inquisition and given a new purpose (sealing the Breach and fighting demons) instead of mage hunting just because.

- She understands the mages' instinct to fight for their freedom, as she relates their being forced to live in the Circle system with her being forced to live at her family estate and live a certain way just because her parents deemed it to be "proper" for a daughter or nobility.  She is 100% against the use of blood magic and sees the alliance with Tevinter as a huge mistake.  She understands that mages are not necessarily ticking time-bombs and are people just like anyone else, but some regulation, whether from within or from an external source, is required.  Mages don't chose to be mages, they are born as such.  She knows the Templar strategy of "kill them all" is pointless and will only lead to more death and misery.  However, the mages have their fair share of the blame.  It takes two sides to wage war, and the mages were just as eager to fight as the Templars were.

This is as far as the meta-gaming goes.  For the purposes of RP'ing, I am not taking into account anything beyond the conclusion of each respective quest.   Based solely on this, which side is the better fit for my Femquisitor?

I'd say conscript the Templars into the Inquisition.

It's important to keep in mind that just because you choose to go a certain path doesn't necessarily mean you are siding with the associated faction. That's not how it works in this game.

So with that out of the way, I think the templar path may be a wee bit more interesting overall, but the mage path is my personal preference (particularly the actual quest itself).

The concept of a "femquisition" made me chuckle a little, and think of this:

"Do you have any idea how hard it is to be a fembot masquerading as a femputer in a manbot's manputer world?"

Templars.

Much as we players might feel empathy for the mages, very, very few mundanes do in the DA world, especially after they went full crazy. Picking mages makes little RP sense if you're not playing a mage.

Well as a noble with a family with very strong ties to the chantry,  I would go with mages especially if you're trying to break the mold, rebel!

It looks like this is an old topic, not that old, but old enough. Still, other people come onto these forums for answers and nobody really went in-depth, so I'll give it a shot.

Siding with the mages is less a decision to be on their side, and more a decision not to ignore the danger of the time magic there. If you want to save them or conscript them, the overall choice is-- let time magic run rampant or ignore it.

Siding with the Templars, either before you're aware of the time magic or after-- is more of a choice to take the safe route with the breach and by extension-- your own life. The Templars suppress magic, and therefore could suppress the breach without any magic tampering. As in, mages pouring magic into the mark on your hand and possibly creating a second temple of Ashes situation.

So Siding with the mages is a daring, responsible move-- whereas siding with the Templars is a smart, safe move that could guarantee your own life and therefore the continuing inquisition.

If your character is daring, responsible, serious then I'd say she'd probably go with the mages. If she's intelligent, particularly quick-witted and prone to finding the safer path, then the Templars.

Have her side with the Templars since her family sent her to the Chantry.

There, problem solved.

This might be simplifying things a little, but... if she believes the Templars as an order have failed, why support them?

And especially if she sympathizes with the mages' desire for freedom. I think it sounds like she might prefer to ally with the mages. But at the end of the day, I think whichever faction you personally feel more aligned with will probably be the more enjoyable side to play.

I have been wondering this myself for my current Cadash knife-chick (sorry to hijack your thread OP). I think, however, for your inquisitor that maybe the mages would fit the RP better than the templars. But then again, that is up to you.

You don't have to support them.  You can always tell them they done f***ed up, and conscript.  IMO conscripting the templars feels less brutal than conscripting the mages.

I think one of the worst things about making those choices actually diverge in the game might be that it creates this false sense in players minds that the Inquisitor is inherently favoring one faction over the other by dealing with them first. The Inquisitor doesn't--can't--know the fate of the other group until it happens, can't know that they can only save one, and the conscription option removes the implication that you must like the faction you recruit.

Templars.

Much as we players might feel empathy for the mages, very, very few mundanes do in the DA world, especially after they went full crazy. Picking mages makes little RP sense if you're not playing a mage.

Well, unless the Inquisitor believes that mages are the most practical and immediate answer for fixing a massive scale magical catastrophe. There's also the fact that from the Inquisitor's perspective the mage leader reaches out to you, while the templar rebuffs you. It would be more than reasonable for them to conclude that the mages will be much more easily recruited.

Everyone replying to the OP as if they still care for an answer, check out the date of the opening post. Certainly at some point since February they must have made up their mind.

(and this is why you don't necro a six months dead thread, specially when there's a thousand other threads discussing the exact same topic)

As much as I like playing the Envy Demon mission but I enjoy Dorian so much much that I go Mage a lot of the time. For your character I'd say mages go better but that's imo.
