Actually I have given in a few times and advanced the story a bit, but I am soon compelled to return and slog through a few more Hinterlands quests. I can't help myself. Is every wilderness area like this?
I'll never leave the Hinterlands! You can't make me!

I actually enjoyed the Hinterlands quite a bit. Even though it was filled with a lot of fetch quests, it felt like there was always something to do. Some of the later zones (e.g. Hissing Wastes, Exalted Plains) felt rather barren by comparison. If you're enjoying yourself, I say stay in the Hinterlands as long as you like.

There's nothing wrong with the Hinterlands. I stayed there for a very long time in my first playthrough, finishing as many quests as I can and avoiding Level 12 rifts. You will be returning back many times in the game so might as well save some content/quests/exploration for the next time you drop by.

The Hinterlands is probably the only open world area that feels directly tied to the main narrative - which is what makes it the best map IMO. Unfortunately, the open world tends to be somewhat divorced from the main narrative for the rest of the game. In my first playthrough, I completed the game with three open world maps unexplored.

I actually thought the Exalted Plains was worse than the Hinterlands for fetch quests.
By the end of it, I had about 30+ map markers on my screen...and ALL of them were fetch quests. ![]()

I personally hated that map. I don't know if it had a single quest that I actually got some enjoyment out of.
The scenery near the area where you fight the dragon was pretty, though.

Yeah. I actually really liked the atmosphere of the Exalted Plains, it had a really grim, desolate feel to it, and the marshy area where you fight the dragon definitely was one of the prettier locales in the game.
There just wasn't anything interesting to do in it. Just an overwhelming amount of letters to find, caches to recover, etc etc. :/

Amplified by the rampart mazes you have to pick through to reach anything. The Plains is probably my least favorite place to visit, but there are still some cool things about it. It looks great as a battle-torn wasteland, and I like that it's broken up by a still live forest near the Dalish clan, but I could do without hearing another Orlesian say he's "tired of waiting around" when there are still demons and undead and wolves to fight, heh.I actually thought the Exalted Plains was worse than the Hinterlands for fetch quests.

Kind of off topic, but one of my favorite areas was the Still Ruins in the Western Approach - the Tevinter Temple which was frozen in time. I think it was more successful at conveying its backstory because it showed rather than told. Codex entries and everything are great, but you can only pick up so many random letters without getting fatigue.
I think DA:I was a step in the right direction (at least in comparison with DA 2's repeating corridors and dungeons), but they need to fine tune how they populate their open-world zones.

Ugh, I just did this last night for the third time and every time I hate those damn ramparts even more. Find the pit -> Burn -> Find other pit -> Burn -> Blow horn. Repeat 3 more times. It's incredibly tedious. I really kind of hate that part of the map so it's the first thing I do when I get to the Exalted Plains just so I can get it over with.

I pretty much completed the entirety of the Hinterlands with just Solas, Varric, and Cassandra, and didn't advance the story at all until I had thoroughly explored the area and "secured" it (most of the rifts closed, blankets and ram meat rations handed out to the peasants, etc). At the time, I enjoyed playing this way, but I think that fully exploring each zone I entered before moving on may have contributed the burnt out feeling I got towards the end of the game... I'm not sure how I'd handle it if I had to do it again. So that's something you might want to keep in mind... at they very least, you may want to consider alternating between a couple of nearby zones as the game progresses, just to avoid feeling like an area has gotten stale.

It's like the Citadel in ME1, without the mall lighting. Get out! Get on the good ship Normandy and FLY!

Hey, it's far worse when it's the other way around with you destroying a mob of lyrium smugglers/outlaws when bears decide to intervene and demolish your party. It's like this:

The first twelve hours of my game were spent pretty much in the Hinterlands. Then I went to the Storm Coast and every other area.

The Hinterlands are ok, and the fetch quests are kind of addictive. They speak to my inner perfectionist.

Heh I WISH the Citadel was like this. Even ME1 Citadel doesn't compare to the stuff to do in the Hinterlands. The Hinterlands would be like having an entire ward arm of the Citadel open to explore.

I prefer facing the ramparts than chasing that 'Golden fricking Halla' into camp....I'm like...'you know what guys, if she gets stuck on that damn rock again, just kill her!'.
