we had a darkspawn wannabe God who was quasi-immortal and an incredibly powerful magister, and he wasn't even their top 3 best villains

At he beat the Starchild at least in terms of villany.

Huh...

Now that I think about it that's not much of an accomplishment.

I would love a villain like The Black Knight as a Bioware villain. Not only is he OP, but he is also a complex character with an interesting story arc.

indeed

Even he wouldn't have been able to beat the Black Knight and his catchy theme song :P

The closest Bioware had to that was the Buldur's Gate antagonist

The orlesian mage that Sera kills in her recruitment mission is a better and more developed villain than Godchild.

Yeah.

Fire Emblem's The Black Knight is one of my top 5 favorite villains in gaming if not media in general.

Darth Vader isn't a Black Knight since he has magic. He is a Black Battlemage.

Then became a Sith Lord. So he is a Black Lord.

Actually, Sith Lords are also referred to as Dark Lords. Black is a synonym for dark and Lord is a class in Fire Emblem. So it does fit. If Vader was in a Fire Emblem game, his class would be Black Lord.  :D

I would turn evil too if I'd spent years hanging around jedi.

Yep. Would be a great battle though.

Lohgain was a great villain.

Yeah, Loghain is the best villain in the Dragon Age franchise so far and one of Bioware's top 5 easily. Saren is another great Bioware villain that came up within the last few years.

And the Wardens just so happen to be mostly men. Probably just a coincidence though.

Does anyone know the percentages offhand? Easy enough to pull up in the toolset, I suppose, though way tedious.

Its not an important point but are you saying this as in 'the amount of NPC appearing in the game' or 'Read it in a book?'

Because in game (DA I ) i don't see many female NPC to fight , not that they are absent just that they are rare , i take it its a 'devs minimising resources' rather than 'women are less likely to be attackable NPC's because men are more prone to being evil etc'

I meant it as characters and NPCs in the games. It might be less obvious because there isn't any boob cup armor and everyone's wearing a helmet (which definitely makes it hard to tell from far away) but there's a lot of female soldier NPCs as well as random enemies. I never mentioned anywhere that men are more likely to be evil though lol

the name of this is game mechanics.

unless a dev come and say that the humans of their world are not humans, and the humanoid mammals, are not biologically similar to us.
then yes,  there are physical differences between males and females.

Yeah no thanks I'd rather not have females relegated to spellcastors again.

I find that explanation unsatisfactory.

What "recruitment tactics" are you talking about? The Grey Wardens recruit by taking anyone of any race or gender who is capable. The Kirkwall city guard takes humans of both genders. The templars take humans of both genders. Your own explanation of "it's magic" explains why there isn't a high infant mortality rate: healing magic. People in Thedas have been shown to live clean, generally disease-free lives compared to actual medieval history. I don't see any human nation of Thedas with a population problem so there is no reason for women to buckle down on popping out a bunch of babies.

And the fact that they're greatest hero is a female barbarian and the primary religion is highly matriarchal.

If anything it would make more sense for men to be restricted in this setting.

because that is gameplay or explainable by magic, how women are able to pursue a martial career in a world that would have been stacked against such a pursuit due to recruitment tactics, infant mortality, and such is another question

Armies in Thedas generally behave nothing like historical armies did...where are the supply trains? foraging? pillaging? attrition? Medieval fantasy does not mirror medieval history, it only draws inspiration from it, DA also unabashedly mixes classical, renaissance, classicism, enlightment, napoleonic and romantic historical themes with the medieval setting. Historical realism went out the gates long before women started strapping on harnesses. This discussion is solely about women because you choose to have a problem with gender specifically.

hmmmnnmmm I agree but, what does it make me when I find female protagonists more amazing than male protagonists? Not that I'd ever play one because I like to be a narcissist with my game plays.

I enjoy stories in movies or novels, like the fifth element, and Lucy, more than say Star Trek's male leads... Am I the reverse of that? Is that something wrong?

Personal preference, which is ok. If you prefer male warriors then that is your personal opinion which you are allowed to have for aesthetic, romantic, traditional or any other personal reasons. But if you try to bring up that you do so because of objective reasons such as historical consistence or realism, then your argument is bs because you accept and roll with a lot more inconsistency and unrealism as it is presented in the setting without ever thinking twice.

...and you know calling out bs in arguments is sort of my shtick here....
