Over 200 hours into the game, and currently at level 20. I think I waited too long to do the specialization quest, but I didn't just start now, I've come back to it again and again, and simply can't get a 3rd Venatori Tome or a 2nd and 3rd Wisp essence. (I'm not interested in the Necromancer.) I've killed countless Venatori Mages, but at this point in the game, they don't spawn anymore, if I go to the Exalted Plains it's completely quiet. And by now I've done other areas that had them. But now it's Zip, Nada, Zilch. Same with Wisp, going to the areas in the Fallow Mire gets me countless Corpse Archers, that's it.

 

I've read many posts on the internet by people also stuck, but nothing works for me. I had 4 ability points saved up, but have given up and used them.

 

I love the game very much, and am completely hooked on it, but am annoyed that this important feature of the game--specialization for the inquisitor--depends on random drops, and I can't even get those random drops anymore.

 

Am I completely out of luck? Any advice?

Wisp essence CAN drop form any rift as well. If you haven't closed all rifts, I'd try that. For tomes, do Hissing Wastes, they drop there too.

Also try revisiting Western Approaches, north-east region and see if there're venatori respawns.

Odd that you can't find any. There should be at least three guaranteed drops of these items. This page has the map for the Venatori tomes:

It also has the other quests on it. I hope this does the trick for you.

Generally they start us on those quests right after you get Skyhold. Not sure why you waited till lv 20.

Thanks for the responses, I have already been to the areas on that map above (I did do a google search before coming here) and it's all quiet (except for wildlife, wolves and such). I'll try again, but it's as if at this point in the game the area has been subdued. I didn't actually wait until level 20, as I said I had about 4 ability points saved up, so I started seriously looking around level 16, by which time I already had the book and 2 tomes via general questing around, but I think that may still have been too late to get a 3rd tome. As to why I waited so long, who knows. But I seem screwed now. I even read a post by someone who said that there is a wraith that respawns at the southern end of Granite Point (under a Stonehenge-type rocks). It does, but it's not the right kind.

 

Anyway, I'll post here if I do get what I'm looking for.

I'm lev 18, tomes are dropping form Venatori Rifters in Exhaled Plains, finishing up a few things I skipped there and, getting tome, even though I don't need them.

Thanks, DarkAmaranth1966, the tip about wisp essence as a random drop from destroying fade rifts did the trick. While Venatori continue to be nowhere to be found (at least for me, at this stage of the game), I had bypassed a few rifts, especially in the Emerald Graves. So I went back and got enough wisp essence. Thanks a ton!

I'm currently at the level 22 again and I still keep getting Venatori respawning at the HIssing Wastes. They always do, in every playthrough.

These are *supposed* to be guaranteed drops... but they aren't. Sometimes, they fail to spawn entirely. Other times, they will spawn, but not drop loot. They have a high likelihood of spawning and dropping the tomes, but it isn't 100%

 

When I did Rift Mage, two of the Venatori Rifters did spawn - one on the Desolate Bank and one in Ghil-whatever Grove - but the one that was supposed to spawn in Halin'Sulahn never did. I got the third tome off a Venatori mage in the Forbidden Oasis, another place rife with Venatori. When I did Champion, all three are supposed to spawn in the Exalted Plains, too, and in the same spot as the Rifters, but again, Desolate Bank and Ghil-whatver Grove spawned no problem, but no Halin'Sulahn.

 

You get Wisp Essences from wraith bosses in the Fallow Mire. Two are well off the beaten path. I don't know where the third is, as it never spawned for me. Fortunately, I already had a Wisp Essence from some random rift drop.
