Before yesterday I had killed 3 dragons, Crestwood, Hinterlands and the Exalted Plains dragon without any trouble from Level 13 to 18. Yesterday afternoon I tried to fight the Storm Coast dragon and I seriously was not able to do more than 5% damage before my party was obliterated. Today I tried the Sandy Howler and again it took 15 minutes to do about 20% damage before being smashed.

I am playing as a Rogue Archer (and have previously) and am now L21 and whilst fighting the Sandy Howler, it appeared that some of my shots were not even doing damage at all or they were randomly only doing 10% of the damage they should do.

Probably unrelated but whilst walking around the Hissing Wastes just prior to this fight, first Iron Bull lost 90% of his health for no reason and a minute later the same happened to Cassandra.

I have played the game 3 times already and once over L15 had no problem taking down the lesser dragons and by L18 the tough ones.

All the party have good armor, and weapons such as The Axe of Dragon Slaying, The Axe  of Green Edges and I am using a bow that does almost 200 damage.

Anyone else getting any problems like this?

I took them down easy enough, I was a little higher in level then you are, but at level 20 I'd beaten all 10. Crafted my own gear though, not specifically for dragon slaying.

I found having someone with the horn ability that shatters armor was CRAZY useful. Also the storm coast one is the hardest, if not second hardest behind the one in the hissing wastes.

Maybe I have just done them in the different order or something, I have crafted armor that has 74% fire proofing and was still getting flamed to pieces.

I am using a bow i found and not one I crafted which I usually have but it can't just be my character as Cassandra and Bull are being slaughtered!!!!

Will try again tomorrow ;-)

You might want to try a repair of your game files. I have had some weird things happen like stuck in combat while in a camp with no enemies in sight and once Sera just died in the middle of some area with no enemies or anything that could do damage around. Repairing game files always fixed it for me. The only thing that I could relate to maybe causing the game file problem was game crash.

I haven't had issues with the dragons, but I have experienced the sudden drop in health out of combat on companions. So far it's happened to Solas and Cassandra, but no one suddenly died yet.

Maybe check your equipment, OP? I've had a problem like "Companion X has suddenly acquired a tendency to die fast" at some time and after doing a thorough attribute and equipment check, I found that one of the items that companion had equipped had the "berserk" trait. These traits are often random on equipment you find and the same unique item can have different traits in different playthroughs.

LOL? What? :D  :P  :o

...But honestly, the dragons are kinda easy and FUN in this game.

Sadly, all you really need is Resist-Tonics and then things are even EASIER and sadly, too face-roll at that point.

You're at the point in the game where Resist-Pots can be purchased from first-level, 2nd second floor in val royeaux store (2 merchants with masks and one of them sells schematics for tier 2 equipment.)

Perhaps if the tonics schematics are not available for sale yet, this could be due to not completing enough side-quests etc in other areas...

BTW, i loved your signature format... had to borrow it

Hint 1: Storm-coast dragon... all electric, get those electric pots or re-build armors and add resist to electric (Again, get your tier 2's from Val Royeaux if you don't already have stuff laying around.)

I don't remember if Sandy Howler is fire or electric... but yea, he's on the harder side because of Armor+ Buff/ AOE stun / and Summoning Mobs... But, again, those resist are so important.

EDIT: OP, I see from later posts that you have decently high resistance...

Question...Hmm, are you mostly using crafted gear or store-bought gear for dps and armors? Sadly, Hissing-Waste (Sandy Howler) at your level out-scales store-bought weapons/gear... All of your stuff really should be Tier 3 crafted Gear at this point.

My main rogue at lv 20 has 432+ dps and 413dps on main-hand and off-hand daggers.

To be fair, i had 300+ dps weapons since lv13 because I found a lucky tier 3 dagger schem and quickly crafted 400+dps daggers with Dragon Bone after slaying Hinterlands dragon/ and Crestwood Dragon.

I think i was lv18-19... Storm-Coast dragon was lv19, this is on Hard-difficult.

(He DID infact feel slightly more difficult than I remember him since these last 4 patches.)

Fun-fight... Sorry for the blurry visuals.. I uploaded to twitch and from now-on, I will just use ShadowPlay @ 1080 directly to Youtube.

Probably an armor and weapons thing -I hardly used a potion killing them at 16 to 23; although the area potions are very useful.  At the lower level I just do it at range with my mage and a lock on the r key - and go watch a movie or something.

It is possible that things have changed, but the game is currently non functional crashing at the character creator again.  Yes, they fixed that item then patch 4 brought it back!  No wonder the management shakeup - they seem clueless at how to approach these game issues.

Thanks for the responses. I am not sure what the issue was but I made myself a new bow and had little trouble with fighting it next time without leveling up any further.

May have been some issue with "The Last Word Bow" I was using or just some random glitch, as I said for some reason my NPC's were just randomly losing health just before it.

Beat the Sandy Howler by the skin of my teeth on Nightmare. It seemed to take damage just fine until the 1/4 mark, then it got tough. Used 8 potions in a span of 2 minutes at that point. The trick is to use the Mark of the Rift ability right away and then build it back up to at least a level 1 attack. For that, you will need to kill the Dragonlings that it summons. That will take a lot of micro-management. It also doesn't help that the terrain is screwed up after the dragon smashes all the rocks and the path finder won't work right.

War Horn and Shield Bash for destroying guard.

Focus on attacking the limbs.

Jars of Bees.

Also, Blackwall's Champion abilities seem to make him last against dragons easily.

Oh, also, the random damage problem you're having is a bug. I think it might be tied to falling damage. I got this with Sera in the Hissing Wastes. I think going up a hill and then down it makes the game think that certain non-controlled characters fell from a greater height. Either that, or there are just random damage instances popping up due to a bug. Some animals in the Hissing Wastes became enemies even thought I didn't attack them. When I look at their health it shows that they were damaged by something.

Suggest taking over one of the warriors and let the AI fight for your rogue.  Cassandra is a guard beast, and guard up = no damage to her.  Blackwall is another one with good guard.  Get a mage, and change AI behaviors to frequently cast barriers - again helps with damage.  First playthrough as a warrior, didn't have an issue.

+1 ... I also concluded it was some stupid fall-damage, lag/bug because you can sometimes hear the char randomly 'yell' as if they fell from a long distance.

I just give them a pot and ignore...
