The first time I played DA2 I remember enjoying it and then as I got further into it I remeber getting annoyed at the repitition to the point that durring my 2nd playthru I just stopped and wrote it off all together. (I was a multiple play-thru Origins guy).

Then DAI came out (with all it's open worldness) and I played thru it twice, because I couldn't get enough... So I went back after my 2nd playthru and played DA2 again (admittedly with the DLC content this time which adds to it) and thoroughly enjoyed it to the point that I didn't even notice the issues I had with it originally. It didn't come up at all to me.

I actually think this game ages well and has more replay value than when I first expirenced it... the story/narrative which drives it was more Shakespearean and darker and characterly richer than I remembered, and it affected me more than Inquisition's. Hawke, no matter how you play him/her is a tragic figure.  And I feel that it is quite an achivement in a video game. I'm excited for the future.

I'm just saying coming back to this game and playing it again has made me realize it is way better than I remembered and is still a lot of fun to play to this day.

Honestly, after I modded the game to make my Mage Hawke a more plausible character by giving him armor and having him use melee weapons (with no Warrior skills at all), the game took on a whole other level of enjoyment. Those issues that are often rehashed were never really issues to me because I was too busy paying attention to the characters and their motivations. Going into a version of the same cave, often gave way to, "What was this person thinking?" or "What are they up to?" With me, these things were the focus of my gameplay. Did I notice the reused environment, parachuting waves of enemies and plotholes? Of course I did. Did that acknowledgement ruin the game for me? Absolutely not. Did I think the game was rushed out of production and seemed console-centric? Yes I did, but again, I focused on the game as it was and I enjoyed it for what it was... So much so that I'm planning another playthrough here shortly.

To add some more perspective, I came to the series via DA2, so you can imagine that I found combat in DA-Origins, clunky and slow. At the same time, I also noticed reused environments and other issues... Of which I thought, "Hmph... I guess it's their system of game design."... And I moved on. Again, did these things detract from the experience? *shrugs* Not so much. Honestly, the only reason why I purchased DA-Origins, was to add some perspective on my DA2 experience... Which it provided.

All in all, I think DA2 gets bashed far more than it deserves. Yes, it has issues, but it's not a bad game *IN MY OPINION*. I'll say again, something I've been saying for a while now... "It's fascinating to see how DA-Inquisition makes some people appreciate DA2 a lot more."

While I'm not hawking for views (no pun intended), you can see what I did with my Hawke via the links in my signature.

DA:I adds a whole new layer of depth to the DA2 story, I think, especially regarding Merrill and her Eluvian. There's another thread specifically about that, and it is fascinating. Whereas before a lot of people believed going down the rival path with Merrill was better for her overall, they've changed their minds. The implications of DA:I result in people viewing Merrill as much smarter and more competent than we ever gave her credit for before.

I've found playing DA2 after DAI a mostly positive experience.

The story is much easier to digest now that I know how the Templar Mage conflict continues into DAI. Now I just focus on the mini-stories that make up the journey of the poor protagonist who released Corypheus - mini-stories which all seem to contain much, much more dialog than DAI.

As for the game balance - it is horrendous, and so it at least presents an interesting challenge compared to DAI. Whoever the hell designed and balanced this game on Insanity apparently just likes torture :P.

In hindsight DA2 did foreshadow Flemeth's identity.

What I've enjoyed about the DA series so far is that each of the 3 games are very unique in gameplay/story. None feel like "more of the same" and stand out on their own feet.

I really can't say which is better either. I hated DA:O's gameplay yet found the most rpg diversity as well as the best story. DA2 had far better gameplay and I loved the whole personality system. It had a small setting though. DA:I's open world added more settings but felt excessive to me like it was trying to be Skyrim. Note: Never collect those damn shards again. Worse, the rpg aspect was very reduced. Most quests offered no rpg elements at all. (Find this item, bring back this ring to this person, etc.) These quests felt tedious and often lacked dialogue altogether.

I hope the next DA stands out on its own as well, for better or worse.
