So as the title states, try to think back to your first encounters with the 10 dragons (excluding ancient dragon and red lyrium dragon). Who was in your party? Why were they in your party?

Did you rotate people so everyone got some dragon slaying time? Did you play favorites? Did you have a very specific dragon hunting team? Did you bring some people for humorous banter and morale?

The following is who I brought during my first/main/canon playthrough, and my reasons for doing so. Simply put, if I completed most of an area with a specific team, they're coming along for the dragon battle in that area.

I played a Human Male Knight Enchanter Mage.

1) Fereldan Frostback (Hinterlands)

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Varric

I pretty much did the entire Hinterlands area exclusively with this team, damn right I was going to bring them along for the dragon battle. This also just happens to be my favorite party combination in the game.

2) Northern Hunter (Crestwood)

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Varric

Did most of Crestwood with this team. Only temporarily brought Blackwall to meet the Warden and storm the Keep, otherwise it exclusively Cass, Solas, and Varric. Felt they deserved to fight the dragon. Varric has a very humorous comment at the end of the battle.

3) Abyssal High Dragon (Western Approach)

-Blackwall

-Iron Bull

-Dorian

Used this team during my time in the Western Approach. Fit nicely considering you mostly fight Venatori (which Bull and Dorian approve) and Darkspawn (Blackwall approves). Bull couldn't wait to get his hands on the dragon, and was quite pleased when we finally lured her.

4) Gamoran Stormrider (Exalted Plains)

-Cassandra

-Blackwall

-Vivienne

Used this team during my time in the Exalted Plains, except for sometimes swapping Blackwall with Solas for magic/elf related stuff. Vivienne's personal quest deals with this area, might as well add a high dragon to her kill count in addition to snowy white wyvern.

5) Greater Mistral (Emerald Graves)

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Sera

Used this team during my time in the Emerald Graves, which happens to be my favorite area in the game. Solas was destined to fight this dragon, considering how badly firestorm obliterates her. Probably the easiest and quickest dragon fights in the game in my opinion. Plus she drops the famed Inquisitor's Helm.

6) Vinsomer (Storm Coast)

-Iron Bull

-Vivienne

-Varric

Not the team I used for the most part during the Storm Coast, but you can only fighting this dragon quite late into the game. Don't know if many people know this, but Bull and Vivienne have some hilarious banter right before the dragon fight.

7) Sandy Howler (Hissing Wastes)

-Cassandra

-Dorian

-Vivienne

Used this team exclusively during my time in the Hissing Wastes, aside from swapping for Varric whenever exploring the dwarven caves. These 3 have some really thoughtful dialogues when exploring the area, and we wrecked the dragon.

8) Hivernal (Emprise du Lion)

-Iron Bull

-Dorian

-Sera

Since Emprise du Lion has 3 dragons, I decided divide the slayings evenly among the 9 companions, meaning every gets to kill one of the dragons. For the first dragon of the area, I went with team yolo. Bull was pleased, and got a neat amulet of power.

9) Kaltenzahn (Emprise du Lion)

-Blackwall

-Vivienne

-Cole

Not the most optimal team, but I was determined to give every companion their dragon slaying moment in Emprise du Lion. I wanted to save my 3 best for last :)

10) Highland Ravager (Emprise du Lion)

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Varric

It was only fitting to have my favorite team (team OG) accompany me during the final and baddest fight. Fun fact, we actually slayed the dragon within seconds with a little cheese tactic I took no shame in doing;

Inquisitor --> Mark of the Rift to hold sleeping Ravager in place

Solas --> Firestorm

Cassandra --> Horn of Valor (upgraded)

Varric --> Mighty Offense Potion (fully upgraded) --> Hail of Arrows --> Leaping Shot (multiple times)

She was dead within seconds. Such a fitting end to the final dragon slaying of the playthrough.

Fun Fact: I used Cassandra more than anyone, 6 times total.

Most of the time:

Me (rogue)

Cassandra

Dorian

Solas

This is my core team. We've been through a lot together. Also my favorites. Solas was my love interest and I always bring that person along, but I would've brought him anyway since he was also my favorite companion.

I've only done 8/10 so far but working on the last dragons.

Twice, this was different.

Ferelden Frostback:

Me

Solas

Iron Bull (since I was told to bring him to take down a dragon at least once)

Blackwall

Another time I stumbled upon a dragon and had Varric in my party instead of Dorian. We made it out of there alive. It wasn't a tough one and I think bugged slightly.

For all of them... rogue and mage...

Cassandra, because she never dies.

Cole, because I specced him into archery instead of dual daggers. He rips through stuff, and if you give him some guard on it... he's not so squishy anymore.

*insertmagethatisntvivienne*, because I'm absolutely certain Solas and Dorian don't obey dragon rules (don't stand in front of mouth, avoid tail, stand behind front legs. Stay to side. WoW raiding 101) I'm assuming it's the mage AI. Also barrier, or extra barriers (if I'm playing a mage). And an elemental staff said dragon is weak against, with energy barrage! Awesome way to build up guard, too :P

I tried IB once and I was fed up with him because he's not exactly helpful.

I always have the same team; Cass, Varric, Solas / Dorian. Most times it's Dorian because his necromancy works in tandem with the confusion grenade when it comes to dragonlings.

When I did my dragon hunting play through, I killed all ten with an archer Inquisitor, Dorian, Cassandra, and Vivienne.

Last playthrough I wass a DW rougue.  Typically I took Cassandra, Dorian and Iron bull.  Sometimes I took Varric and Cassandra and Dorian.  Before that I was a S&S warrior and took Cass or Bull, Varric and Dorian.  I take Dorian everywhere.  He's my gay bestie and fabulous. I have used all party members in my various playthroughs to do my dragon slaying.  Except for Cole.  I never take Cole anywhere ever. Personality wise I like him way better than that killjoy Solas, but in my last game I didn't need another DW rogue and already had two archers.

Usual team:

Blackwall: unkillable

Cassandra: Horn of Valor

Varric: Hail of Arrows

But I do swap people out sometimes. Bull gets one crack at a dragon because he loves them. If I'm seriously overleveled for the dragon, I won't worry at all about who's along. I tend to become overleveled often, as I tend to clear zones completely before moving on to the next.

I pretty much stuck to

Mage Inquisitor

Iron Bull

Cassandra

Varric

though they are my favourite party to use as well.

Well, I only went through all ten on my second playthrough, but I pretty much went with Cassandra, Sera and Vivienne since they were my main team in that playthrough. Although for two of them I switched out Sera for Iron Bull because I made him some OP gear and my Inquisitor was a bow rogue so I didn't lose much by including him. I figured after the conversation about slaying a dragon that he didn't actually fight the guy deserved a bit of glory so I gave him the first two dragons in the Emprise Du Lion.

My team consisted of blackwall.
Everyone else was told to not drink potions and died almost immediately. My rogue inquisi was in perma-stealth, and I sent Blackwall in to fight the dragon. I took a nap and when I awoke, there was one less Dragon in the hinterlands. :D

Oh, and this was on nightmare.

Well done Blackwall.

If I didn't want to cheese it with Sera, I started foregoing rogues altogether. They have no means of protection against AOE, unlike warriors and mages, and considering the constant repositioning dragon battles require, it's too much effort to keep them close enough to mages for barrier.

Blackwall, Vivienne, Solas was usually the go-to team.

I like the way Iron Bull and Sera are happy like children during dragon fights, so I always tried to gring them along.

First playthrough (qunari rift mage):

N/A, that inquisitor wasn't interested in hunting / disturbing things that weren't bothering him first.

Second playthrough (Dalish DW assassin):

Frostback: Sera (with daggers), Cole, and Solas, because they're my dream team.

Everything else: solo. This inquisitor got an insane urge to hunt them all down and give them elegant deaths (she's weird and slightly terrifying). She'd killed every single high dragon before doing Adamant or Wicked Eyes.

I don't think I'd ever bring a warrior or knight enchanter to a dragon fight, unless I really wanted someone for RP reasons. They lack single-target spike damage and generally get more offense/defense bonuses when surrounded by many enemies. Dragons are much easier to survive if they're killed quickly (much less chances to generate guard / summon dragonlings), so I prefer rogue-heavy parties. :)

My standard Dragon hunting team is:

Me - Rift Mage

Blackwall

Cassandra

Vivienne

That setup is pretty much unkillable and eliminates all issues with companion AI. Oddly, Dragons in this game are more dangerous at range than in melee.

I have also taken a couple out with just my general questing team of Cassandra, Dorian, and Sera.

It's weird, but I only killed three dragons out of two playthroughs so far. I really should get back in on that.

As for who I used, Cassandra and Blackwall were constants. Dorian was my mage of choice most of the time, and I kind of circled through the rogues, each of them did well.

Cassandra in particular was a savior the first time I fought the Greater Mistral.

This, although it can be overkill taking four rogues.

Warrior inquisitor and cassandra hacking at its feet and aggroing him. While the dragon is distracted Sera would cloak and sneak to the back of his legs and do high burst damage. And Viv would be support or the one woman dragon killer when everything went wrong.

The most cringey part for me is when people recommend not bringing Cole to a dragon fight. Like... they do know he can double their entire party's damage on a single target, right? He's pretty much made to fight bosses. His squishiness ceases to be an issue if the dragon fight is over in half the time.

Much less than half, actually, because killing dragons quicker means they don't raise guard or summon babies as many times, so their total health is much smaller.

So far my dragon battles on this play through have been.

Hinterlands: 2 mages, warrior and rogue. My inquisitor (mage) Vivienne, Cassandra and Varric

Crestwood: 2 mages, warrior and rogue. My inquisitor (mage) Dorian, Blackwall and Sera

Western Approach: 2 mages, 2 warriors. My inquisitor (mage) Vivienne, Cassandra and Iron Bull

Exalted Plains: 2 mages, warrior and rogue. my inquisitor (mage) Vivienne, Cassandra and Sera

On my first and only full play through. I killed all 10 dragons. but I was playing as a rogue. So my other party for all of them was either 2 mages and a warrior or 2 warriors and 1 mage. I split up the mages based on who has the opposite elemental attacks from what the dragon had.

4 warriors, 2 tank, 2 DPS vs. Vinsomer. Why? Because full, 1 class parties are more interesting than a standard balanced party. When I finally get round to high dragons in my current game, I'll use 4 mages, then eventually 4 rogues and 4 mages again.

When I did Vinsomer, I was like level 23 on Nightmare. I didn't do too well, though. My PC died once before being revived, Iron Bull pretty much lasted a few seconds up close, then I may have revived him once, but he was down for the rest of the fight, and Cassandra is my primary tank, but she kept getting killed every time I revived her. Eventually I gave up, and just used my PC and Blackwall - both champions. Blackwall didn't die once, despite being the secondary tank with no Vanguard talents.

Normally, I try to rotate everyone, and it's not just limited to high dragons. Usually I try to have Solas against fire dragons, Dorian against cold dragons, and Vivienne whenever, usually she's the only mage.

I used Blackwall, Cole and Solas against the Highland Ravager. That was how I found out that To The Death is awesome (I did 31k non-crit damage with Mighty Blow once). I actually did the Highland Ravager before the other 2 Emprise du Lion dragons, and before Vinsomer and the level 20 dragon in the Hissing Wastes.

I waited until I was level 20 before I started taking down dragons. Then I knocked them all out in one or two settings haha.

My go to team was Sera, Solas, and Cassandra (I was a knight-enchanter). Would have used Iron Bull, but that guy is made out of tissue paper (maybe I gave him the wrong specs?)

Some warriors with guard because guard and Vivienne because Vivienne.
