I'm not really a big fan of silent protagonists in general but in DA's case its different:

The Warden had no voice but a lot of interesting RP possibilities and thats why I never really minded that he/she had no voice because there was so much freedom on how to play the character

I liked Hawke too he/she had the most depth but even though you could determine Hawke's personality there was not much room for RP, Hawke was more of a pre defined protagonist

With the Inquisitor it seems that they tried to combine them both (voice + creating your own character) and sadly they failed

There are no interesting RP possibilities and even though the Inquisitor is voiced he has no personality or depth but is rather bland like I mentioned in another thread (but lets focus on voice or no voice here)

With a possible DA4 I think its clear that races will return and the approach will be similiar to DA:I where you can make your own character instead of someone like Hawke

Thats why I vote for no voice! Anyone agree?

I love the german Inquisitor voice. Probably missed the first third of all his dialoges because I was listening to that voice and not to what he was saying.

Voice for me.

My only issue with the voice, is that they have been treating it like Mass Effect which has a pretty bad response system. We make a choice on the wheel expecting that to be the response, however Shepard or Hawke/Inquisitor will then have a response none of us really wanted to give. I'm not a fan of this.

I do. But I guess most people won't. Not a game for people with imagination anymore, it became all flash no substance, if they see on the screen they are happy. Is not about roleplaying anymore, is about seeing your role played on the screen by the Bioware character.

No voice in ideal old world. In that world BTW I'm also the supreme leader and the asari are real....

But this a far cry from that world so yeah. I know it'll be a voiced protag.

As I greatly prefer voiced to silent, I'll always vote the former, but it doesn't matter, because voiced is here to stay anyway.

I prefer silent protagonists as opposed to a voiced one but again, the market is dominated by instant-gratification-all-flash-no-substance crowd so it doesn't really matter.

A game with a silent protagonist is something that Bioware will never produce again.

I loved the voiced protagonist. They're only getting better and better at making the voiced protagonist sound like what you'd want them to. I've made as many mistakes in DA:O (and other RPGs with voiceless protagonists) picking a dialogue option that came out wrong as in DA:I.

I want voice, but i want the lines back from when we had silent protagonists. The conversation tree or whatever was better in DA:I than II, but still it is lacking. I want to know exactly what my character is saying, so it does not feel out of character.

I actually prefer voiced too but Inquisition made me rethink that (regarding the DA series only)
I just wish that Bioware would decide and not try to combine it in some half assed way:

voice the protag if you want to make a more pre defined protagonist like Hawke who had the most personality and depth easily

and drop the voice if you want the players to create their character from scratch give them a lot more RP possibilities etc.

I doubt we will ever see a silent protagonist from BW again.

This [erroneously] assumes that a silent protagonist automatically has more substance than one that is voiced.

The silent protagonist has its strengths, but I really don't see Bioware shaking the voiced trend now that both their major franchises, ME and DA, are specifically known for them now.

I don't really mind. Among the advantages of the voiced protagonist: they feel much more connected to the world and the other voiced characters. I just wish they would drop the paraphrase and use the DE:HR system of showing the full line, or the start of the full line.

It's an empirical observation. Based on the track record of BioWare voiced protagonists, they have been far fewer opportunities to RP and actually build a character. This restriction has been particularly egregious in Dragon Age II and Inquisition, where our characters are predominantly defined by three shallow personalities.

Under the current circumstances, a silent protagonist seems to me to be the better option. I'm not opposed to a VP on principal, but they need to have far more opportunities for roleplaying and originality. The point is moot, however; silent protagonists will never be back in BioWare games.

This.

Though it was tough to get used to at first, since the other BioWare character he did was Kai Leng.

I prefer a voiced protagonist in games where all the NPC dialogue is voiced, so unless for some crazy BioWare go back to the Baldur's Gate way of doing things where most lines aren't spoken at all, I prefer for our protagonist to talk.

I'm not sure I'd say that of Inquisition, but in any case silent protagonists can also feel like cardboard cutouts at times. They don't AUTOMATICALLY have more substance.

Seems to me it's more a matter of the 'dialogue wheel' vs 'complete text onscreen' issue.

I don't have a problem with the protagonist voice, I just sometimes end up loading because of the difference between what I thought I'd say and what I said. But that doesn't bother me that much, as long as I can reload, everything's fine.

But I wouldn't want a mute character. Having no voice in Origins with everyone else fully voice felt odd to me. Like I'm a mute, waving with signs.

And if the voices annoy anyone that much: Turn the subtitles on, your voice volume off and you get the ultimate DA:O experience ;)

They can have exactly as much substance as the player's imagination allows.

A voiced character can only have as much substance as the developer creates.

That's the difference. I'm sorry you don't feel the same.

Silent protagonist has its charm, but  I prefer voiced.

I've really liked the VA's so far... at least the British Male ones which are all that really matter to me. Boulton and Hadden-Paton were great in their respective roles.
