Introducing the DAI Patch 5 Beta Program, Featuring the Black Emporium!

http://blog.bioware....black-emporium/

Blk_Emporium.jpg

At BioWare, we’re always looking for new ways to empower our players. Whether in person or online, we firmly believe in collecting feedback and working with our community to ensure we’re addressing issues important to both new and experienced players.

For Dragon Age: Inquisition, we’ve developed a faster and more compressed patch schedule than any prior BioWare game. However, due to the nature of the certification process, it can often still take weeks after developing a fix to release it on different platforms. Because of this, we continue to explore new ways to foster better communication between our players and developers.

Enter the Patch 5 beta program.

We want to open up our upcoming Patch 5 to a select group of PC players via signup in a closed, developer-like environment. This not only allows us to more quickly identify and respond to future issues, but gives our developers a great, new way to work directly with our players.

Patch 5 will be the biggest patch we’ve released to date, and it addresses a number of key concerns for our community.

As part of the beta, participants will have access to the Black Emporium, a mysterious underground shop run by an immortal proprietor. There, Inquisitors can find powerful artifacts and tools to aid their cause, purchase epic weapons, powerful accessories, new crafting materials and schematics, and even change their voice and facial appearance using the Mirror of Transformation.

In efforts to support different playstyles, we’ve also included the ability to bind additional mouse buttons, as well as an auto-attack key for single player. We’re also including the option to adjust the size of subtitles, and added a shader quality setting to the graphics options, giving players more versatility when running Inquisition.

In Skyhold, we’re adding party storage to the Undercroft—a new feature that many players asked for and we’re happy to finally add. And for those looking to spice up their look, we’ve added an item tinter that lets players use crafting materials to change the color of armor.

Item_Tinter.jpg

There are a number of other changes and improvements in the patch, and we’ll provide our beta community with a full list so they can better understand what’s going on in their game.

You’ll be able to sign up for the beta program through the Keep in the near future, so stay tuned for more information.

Please note that due to the nature of our patch infrastructure, the beta program is currently open to selected PC users only. Unfortunately we don’t have any information on this or other upcoming patches to our broader PC player community or other platforms at this time.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to sharing these improvements with you in the near future.

I don't see why not. You can easily walk around Haven in amour and still be forced into the Skyhold outfit in the war room, so I would imagine not having to change models at all would be easier. ...

I would never say no to more outfits or the ability to change the colour of the existing one, but I think letting you wear armour would be the easiest, most cost effective, and the fastest. They can add new things later in patches or DLC.

I have empathy with your wishes :) .

I'm no developer (and I'm presupposing that may also apply to you),

but Mike Laidlaw was fairly specific on this point:

"In general, if it were "really easy" assume that we would have done it.
If [it] wasn't done, it wasn't "really easy"."
ML Tweet.

Though yes, it would be cool.

Well nice they include it in a (free, i assume) patch. However unless there will be a Story expansion, it won't be much of a use for me...

So they're adding the Black Emporium for free? I'm asking because it's phrased somewhat oddly. 'As a beta-tester you'll have access to the Black Emporium' does that mean it will come free in a patch or does that mean it's gonna be a tiny DLC that's getting tested along with the rest of the patch?

You know perhaps I am misremebering or something but I thought I got the BE in DA 2 for free in the first place.

Game patches by convention are always free. :)

So how would one know if they are in the beta program and are able to download the patch? Is it even live yet, for the testers?

Unless you bought DA2 used, you did.

It's good to allow Beta testing...all the bugs can be ironed out and dried ready for us to install. We Hope !!

In case of EA I wouldn't say it too loudly.

You would sign up when they open signups and, be notified if you are accepted. I assume any beta testers will need to be 18+ so that the Do Not Disclose agreement will be binding and,  because the game is rated Mature. I'm sure there will be consequences such as bans and/or legal action against anyone who violates that agreement. Pretty standard beta stuff.

So If you are a beta tester, you use the new content, report any bugs, glitches, exploits etc... via a private means, to the developers. You do not talk about what is included, patched, broken etc... otherwise and, do not show anyone the game running with beta content, pictures, quotes or anything else form the beta content. You don't let anyone else play your game if you have beta content installed. In short, you discuss nothing about it with anyone except the devs and other beta testers PERIOD until it is released.

Yes you can say things like "Wow, the upcoming patch has a lot of exciting and cool stuff in it." But not "The proprietor in the shop is named ABCXYZ" and not "They fixed the BLAHBLAH bug, yay."

Just my guess as to how it will work but, that's pretty much how it is for most closed beta testing programs. Yes it's cool to get the new stuff first, yes its fun, funny and educational to play with the intent of finding bugs, glitches and exploits the devs missed, find mistakes they made, try to do things no one in their right mind would think to try in game - because when it releases, someone will try to do just that, even if no one thinks anyone would ever even think of that.

The rewards are getting the content early and, knowing you helped make the game better for everyone, and the dev's jobs easier and faster, and let them move on to developing more new things and patches sooner since they didn't have to do the beta testing themselves.

I have been a beta tester for years, it's fun, frustrating, aggravating and, sometimes leaves you and the devs alike scratching your heads and trying not to scream at the top of your lungs at the game - it is just a computer program after all, it won't care how much you yell at it or, how many fistfuls of your now gray hair you throw at it. :)

I understood one of the main reasons (I've read) for using the dupe glitch was to get materials to deck out their parties in matching golden armour. With the tinting, that problem is solved presumably (might also be some rare materials shopping options in the Emporium).

Hope so. I myself use the glitch cause I'm really not that good at crafting weapons and armors, so having an infinite supply of mats is a huge comfort to me. I don't have to sit and sweat every time I try to make stat-wise good equipment. :'D

Continuing to polish and add new content is the exact type of support I want from a company. I'm not surprised that some people can find fault with this announcement just because people suck in general.

It must mean a toggle, because you can already autoattack by holding a key :)

That word.

Hah, right. I know how beta testing works. I've also done a bunch of it. I was just asking if it was going to be chosen randomly across Origin users, or there would be an application process. And if it's already live or still to be launched :D

So does this mean if I play on PC but use an xbox controller i'm still shafted with 8 skill slots? honestly this is the only truly important feature of p5 for me.

I don't think the intent is to make more abilities available. It's just better support for gaming mice.

You're thinking maybe that the message he's getting is wrong? He's got enough elfroot but doesn't have enough of the other stuff?

I can get everything.  I need alpha quillback quills?  No prob.  Easy.  Need the obsidian that goes with it?  Sixteen tons and what do I get?  Nothing.  The req thing simply never acknowledges that the obsidian was mined, even though it was most definitely mined.  Need 10 elfroot to help stock the dalish?  I have fifty.  Doesn't matter. Slap all the staves in front of all the logging stands and quarries and the game just doesn't care.  I can craft weapons and armor, but that's it. This time around the elven lady on the Crossroads in the Hinterlands who needs herbs didn't even show up.  Left her list though.

A most interesting glitch.  One that pretty much kills the game for me.  I've reached the "I used to be disgusted, now I'm just amused," stage of it all.

That's a really odd glitch, especially since it doesn't seem to be hitting very many people. It's not like a wacky hardware configuration would cause this kind of thing.

Doesn't appear that what you quoted is related to skill slots.

I'm not fond of it either, but the 8 ability limit is a design choice and is likely an overhaul (like tactics) too involved to actually happen. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I'm not a designer, but surely it wouldn't be too hard to just let us have a radial menu like the first two games! It should have been a higher priority - that is, higher than nothing.
