With ME4 you'll also be getting lots of players who were kids when ME1 was released. Assuming ME4 is 2016 release, that's roughly 9 years since ME1. 18 or 19 year olds who pick up ME4 will have been in elementary school when ME1 came out.

No, shut up, you're old

Don't worry the industry is working on that.

ME3 had a year's worth of SP and MP DLC support. I would not be surprised if ME4 has its MP spun off as f2p at some point and supported as long as it is hitting revenue targets.

Give a warm welcome to the games as a service future.

Back in my day, longevity meant content that was packaged with the game when I bought it.  None of this DLC nonsense.

.....

~Unlockables, cheat codes, debug modes, jamming with the programming, mastering the 32 bit, you don't want none of this, I'm rocking the old school way like a theatrical play, can't keep up with the rhymes cuz I'm~

...Okay, I'll stop.

It did always seem like a needlessly cynical marketing ploy to me, rather than there being a genuine artistic/entertainment need for it.

People (by and large) are extremely fickle.  When you wonder why so many game endings tend to be cold pish, you have so shoot that through the fact that if you're LUCKY, 20% of your customer base will ever finish your game.  It's really hard to justify "longevity" to your publisher when said publisher looks at metrics, and replies, "Why?  Our customers certainly don't care.  Why should you?"

Welcome to a world where a game's cover price adjusted for inflation, SHOULD be around $90.  We're getting two-thirds of what we used to because that is what we (as a customer base) are willing to spend.  DLC, preorder bonuses, collector's editions... game companies have to make up the difference SOMEHOW, especially since the costs of a video game at the AAA level have skyrocketed over natural inflation.

It's really hard for me to blame "greedy game companies" (at least in terms of pricing) when they're trying to run their business based off of price points from the mid-'90s.  Now there are certainly OTHER things I am willing to take game companies to task for, but that's an entirely separate discussion.

Yeah, ME2 and ME3 are pretty one game, but yo, that human reaper and the focus on gameplay, you know, the most important part of a video game ^^, made people real salty lol. Casey Hudsons infamous "The characters are the plot" spiel didn't helps matters much either

ME1 was very poorly put together to the point they were probably lucky it sold as well as it did. They had to do something especially since they were no longer a platform prestige product but an EA studio that needs to produce results. Fortunately both of its sequels are much better designed games.

Some of the backlash is a little funny since to me this series always played like a TPS with dialogue options. Other than a 15 minute section on Noveria, ME1 was very much a linear talk to these people and then go do your corridor shootbangs. It was just very bad at the shooting part.

I have gotten a good laugh from some of the ME1 4eva! types on NeoGAF. I think some people will latch onto anything with a whiff of complexity no matter how poorly designed as long as it lets them posture as an elite standing above the casual/dudebro menace.

Maybe Shepard was just blown into a wall as usual. Anyway he'd probably just retire and ride off into the sunset. (He's not much of a taxi person.)

Stargeezer: Well, my sweet, let me tell you about the time Shepard faced off with a plant that spit out asari clones, with a complement of creepers, mean as hell and thick as grass!

Attendant: Mr. Moreau, it's 8 o'clock, time to turn in!

I hadn't though about it like that. Thanks! If you consider the amount of resources that go into creating a game, we're fortunate to have them as cheap as we do.

Excellent. Instead of Indoctrination Theory we can have Ageing Theory, in which the events of the series are actually just poorly remembered individual anecdotes strung together into a consistent narrative to teach us about how things were much better in the good old days and how lucky we are now to have whizbang computers and exotic fruit

One of the "rose colored glasses" things that I like to take to task when it comes to Mass Effect 1 is the illusion of choice that players love to pretend it had.  Most dialog paths only had two or maybe three distinct routes (just like the "auto-dialogue" ridden sequels that were oh so terrible) with a bunch of empty fluff options that didn't offer anything unique.

My ending for M shep LI: Liara Background/personality: Spacer Paragon Warhero

Shepard: In the aftermath of the battle of the Citadel a massive effort was made to recover Shepard and Anderson as both were assumed dead given the power the crucible had unleashed upon the galaxy much to there surprise they found Shepard barely clinging to life after rushing him to a hospital they managed to setup a QEC link to the Normandy informing the crew of Shepard's survival while the Normandy rapidly finished its repairs and returned to the sol system the best doctors and Miranda did there best to ensure that Shepard would not die.

After being in a comma for a little more then two months to give his body time to heal Shepard wakes up to see Liara sitting over him waiting patiently for this exact moment. After spending the next few weeks recovering much to his growing frustration despite Liara's instance that he stay in that bed Shepard finally starts his physical therapy vowing to build back his former strength if only so everyone would let him out of the hospital. The crew of the Normandy (ME2-3 all but Mordin, Thane and Legion) take turns keeping the press and others away from Shepard and visiting with him. Six months after the battle for Earth Shepard is finally released from the hospital with Kasumi helping to get Shepard out undetected after making it back to Anderson's former apartment (Shepard still not ready to call it his yet) Miranda finally lets Shepard in on her little secret as she had called it. While she was saving Shepard (again) she make a small upgrade to the cybernetics that would dramatically slow the aging process for him she called it her wedding gift for Liara and him saying "Shepard you saved the galaxy someone had to make sure you were rewarded for it."

The next day Hacket and his mother showed up at the apartment to tell him that first off he did good, second he was being promoted to Admiral even if he wanted to resign the commission immediately after he received it, and that third they were going to suggest that he become the next human councilor. Despite everyone's shock Shepard accepted both the promotion and the seat on the council saying "This gives me a good reason to retire and it should mean Liara won't keep me trapped in a stasis field if I even think of doing something dangerous." But Shepard's happiest moment came several months later when he held his first born daughter Benezia.

Liara: After the war she gave up the mantle of Shadow Broker saying that she only managed to put up with the job because that was what it would take to end the war with the reapers. (Some believe that Miranda took over the organization but that has never been proven and Liara is telling. Laira became the youngest matriarch in asari history despite not entering that stage in her life for several centuries. She and Shepard eventually retired to her families estate on Thessia after Shepard retired from the council after 10 years stating that "humanity shouldn't be represented by any one person for too long." Liara did publish her book with Javik Travels with a Prothean and despite his initial plans to join the rest of his kin he found new hope when on a dig Laira found another Prothean bunker with enough surviving Protheans to restart their civilization. Now Liara spends her time with Shepard and their youngest daughter Hannah.

I'm not going to talk about what happened to Shepard in my headcanon, since that story is told in Invictus, the link in my sig. For the record, I didn't pick Destroy and I didn't pick Synthesis - I'm sure that you can fill in the gap :P

Ashley (Romanced): When the Crucible fired, it disrupted the Mass Relay network, stranding the Normandy in uncharted space. During the long voyage back to Earth, Ashley discovered that she was pregnant. Within a year, she gave birth to a girl, naming her "Cassandra". She resigned from active service in order to raise her daughter, and took up a teaching position on Elysium. The Williams family still keeps in touch, and Ash is regularly seen at Earth, the Citadel, and at the rebuilt Arcturus-Memorial station.

Garrus and Tali: Interspecies relationships are uncommon, but not unheard of, and Garrus and Tali got married two years after the Reaper war. As the quarians settled onto Rannoch, the Admiralty Board was replaced by a planetary government, and Tali'Zorah took up the position of Council Ambassador. Rannoch is outside of Council space, and neither the quarians nor the geth have any particular desire to join the Council, but diplomatic relationship is strong, particularly with both humanity and the turians. Garrus was offered a position as a Spectre by Councillor Sparatus, but after some consideration turned the offer down. He regularly arranges reunions for the Normandy crew, often holding them on either the Normandy itself, or at the Citadel flat that he inherited from Shepard.

EDI and Joker: Human-AI relationships are unheard of, however, but that didn't stop Joker and EDI. The two of them still work together, with the SR2 having been repaired and refitted by the Alliance military after the War. Questions about their private life are met with a joke by EDI, or by evasive comments from Joker. AIs are still illegal under Council law, and the Council was not pleased to discover EDI's existence once the Reaper War had been concluded. Ultimately, however, they ruled that she had a right to existence - the law hasn't changed, but she is now an acknowledged exception.

Liara: Liara dismantled the Broker's network after the war, and turned her attention back to archaeology - putting new research into the revelations from the Reaper War, and writing "Journey's with the Prothean" with Javik's assistance. She ultimately accepted a professorship at the University of Serrice. Privately however, Liara kept some of Broker's contacts active, using them to keep a watchful eye over the galaxy as it rebuilds, and to look into the Reapers' mysterious disappearance.

Miranda: Ex-Cerberus, but also a known associate of Commander Shepard, Miranda was a controversial figure in the Reaper War's immediate aftermath. The Alliance originally intended to prosecute her, but at trial it came to light how her actions had shut down Sanctuary and allowed the successful assault on Kronos, changing the course of the War. She was given a full pardon, and, in co-operation with her sister Oriana, Miranda began a new tech-company called "Lawson Consolidated". The company research has recently begun looking into practical applications of nano-technology, with Miranda utilising her experience from running the Lazarus Project.

Jack: Jack is still teaching biotics at Grissom Academy, and is surprisingly one of the most popular teachers. Some of her older students tell stories of fighting alongside her in the war, impressing freshers at the academy, although these tales are often exaggerated... probably.

Kahlee Sanders: Kahlee Sanders, meanwhile, never returned to the Academy, disappearing from the public eye for a short while before running for the position of humanity's new Councillor. She succeeded, and has helped humanity become a constructive force in rebuilding the galaxy.

The Krogan: Contrary to Salarian fears, the cure of the genophage did not lead to a new set of Krogan rebellions. Under the combined leadership of Wrex and Eve, the Krogan have reclaimed a number of their old colonies, but have surprised the galaxy by showing an impressive capacity for artwork and song. The Tuchunkan pyramids, recently completed, have become a popular tourist destination, built as both a memorial to the Reaper War, as a symbol of hope for the future.

The Geth: The Consensus welcomed the quarians back onto Rannoch, and that alliance has remained strong. The galaxy at large is still wary of the Geth, but they have successfully opened trade routes with the Alliance and with the Salarians. The Geth have also started a research corporation, naming it "Corpus Consensus", looking into transhumanist technologies such as synthetic limbs and brain implants. They often find themselves in competition with "Lawson Consolidated", but the two companies have worked together on some projects.

Zaeed: Zaeed kept trying to retire from work, but somehow it never really stuck. Despite now being in his mid-70s, he is still a mercenary force to be reckoned with, although most fellow mercs will refuse to take job with him. It's not his attitude that they have a problem with - they're just afraid that they might not make it out alive...

Kasumi: Kasumi became mysteriously rich after the Reaper War, at around the same time that various human companies previously associated with Cerberus collapsed. She now owns a home on Terra Nova, with an extensive library and a personally designed garden. Her neighbours say that she seems to come and go at strange times, however...

Steven Hackett: Widely praised as a war hero, Hackett took early retirement after the Reaper War and moved to Earth. He lives a fairly private life in New Zealand, but is known to have developed a reputation as a Sky-Car collector.

There is no proof that is the real Shepard or not.

My clone choose not to be saved instead she falls to his death. But again there is no proof that the clone is dead on the Citadel.

She/he is a human being so falling from probably more than hundreds of meters there is no way she/he could have survived.

So this one i can 100% confirm that the clone is dead.

Javik 100% confirmes that he speaks with the real Shepard and not the clone aboard the Normandy.

So that breath scene is the real Shepard and not the clone, this can be 100% confirmed.

Death or life ?. The scene where the crew stands on the Normandy and holding Shepards name on the plate. No one place Shepards name there if there is a breath scene during the epilogue. That means no one is 100% sure about Shepard is dead or not, so no one did found Shepards body yet during the epilogue scene.

For me, it's simple:

Shepard survived and then (with some headcannoned parts) Citadel DLC happened.

We had our glorious reunion and afterwards left with the Normandy to Rannoch (where my Shepard stayed with Tali, unless something really important happened to get them back into action) and gave command of the Normandy to my bro Garrus. ^_^

Yeah, I'm not much into details, so shoot me. :P

Ashley: When Shepard triggered the Crucible, Ashley was heard bemoaning the fact that she should have stayed with Shepard.  Shortly after a mysterious signal is received on the normandy, she is reunited with shepard on earth as he recovered from crush injuries he sustained lying under a pile of rubble.  After his recovery and several months of operations to remove his cybernetics, Ashley and Shepard settled down on the garden planet of Ilos where they set up 'The Chantry', as well as the Circle of Magi and the Templars.

Garrus:  After the Shepard incident, Garrus went back to Omega and became a gun for hire.  Renaming himself Archangel II he was most popular with the Dancers who quite often were shortchanged and Garrus made a most efficient debt collector.

Tali: Tali went home to Rannoch and set up a home with Geth 12435469.2.  They have 2.7 cyberchildren.

EDI and Joker: Months after the shepard incident, Joker was hospitalised after trying to interface with EDIs female port.  Unfortunately he mistook it for a power socket and is currently undergoing major reconstructive surgery.

Liara: After the Shepard Incident, it became apparent to Liara that nobody liked her.  She decided to go and live on her own.  She moved to a planet where the natives were italian cannibals.  Years later when explorers went to the planet in search of Doctor T'Soni, they discovered the locals favorite dish was Spagetti Carved Liara.

Miranda: Miranda came through the Shepard incident unscathed, due to her well developed frontal crumple zones.  She joined a travelling actors group that went touring the universe performing a michael jackson tribute musical.  She was last seen with a monkey and 56 children heading into a theme park.

Jack: Jack left Grissolm Academy to study back on earth.  The following year the "Psychotic Biotic" Killed all her fellow students and is currently on death row awaiting execution.

The Krogan: The Krogan were left to their own devices and went to war with each other.  There were no survivors.

The Geth: After the war, the geth settled on rannoch, where corrosion eventually took its toll and they all became non-functional.

Zaeed: Zaeed now lives a fruitful life as the frontman for heavy metal prog rock band "The Killers"

Its not just the temperature on Rannoch, anyone apart from quarians or turians would not be able to eat or drink anything grown there. Would need constant supplies of human food. the heat isnt that big of a problem if they live close to polar regions and use air-conditioning.

As a Talimancer myself I understand the problems but I think for shepard Tali would be worth it.
