Why Promote So Much?

I realize it makes your character stronger, but I'm worried about making threatening too easy, and eventually, making perilous too easy by getting too many promotions.
Is this a valid fear? If so, why do people advocate promoting so much? Won't they just complain when the game becomes too easy?

I always figured making your characters stronger was the purpose of any rpg.

They may complain from it. But we don't know the full mathematics yet to how long it takes to make them easier honestly.  Though some people that have a number of promotions under their belts are already complaining about routine being too easy. Specially once they've attained a fair share of the top level gear.  Maybe we'll see a higher level of difficulty later on or something to make up for it like we did in ME3MP. It's hard to say.  I myself would just like to see more maps at this point.

It's fun to get stronger and master the hardest levels, but there should be some kind of level cap, otherwise it just becomes a pointless treadmill.

There is no sense of progression per se in this game. It is pretty much 'make your own' sense of progression and Promotions are likely the closest thing to it for most people.

Finally, someone gets it.

Because all the cool kids are doing it. I just love it when someone who has all the high-end gear and who promotes each character 50 times comes on here and complains that the game is too easy

I don't see the point, so I don't do it. It's essentially decreasing the challenge of this game and making the content trivial.

Plus there is no skill requirement to it. Any shmuck can prestige a million times and solo perilous. If I wanted to make the game easier, I'd just play the AW.

Do you also force yourself to play with low level gear as well?

I think the gear, more than the promotions, makes the game easier.

Well there is a cap on gear. Not a cap on promotions. Not really a fair comparison.

Playing games with a level 20 character can be just as boring (passive attribute bonuses). Since I've been exclusively alternating between Archer and Hunter, I'm at 30 cunning right now, which translates as 10% bonus to my base crit chance and ranged defence. The crit chance is noticeable (my gear bumps it up to ~31% as a base, though). The ranged defence doesn't help much, however. It'd take some serious promoting to make Perilous trivial. Gear makes more of an impact at this point.

Any shmuck can prestige a million times and solo perilous.

I doubt "any shmuck" has the time or patience to promote the hundreds of times required to make Perilous easy for every class.

Also, since gear and a level 20 character is a much quicker route to high stats, gear>promotions is a very fair comparison to make. I'd have to promote another 278 times to achieve 50% bonuses in each attribute, and that sounds horrible.

But since you can functionally become immune to all damage through promotions and one shot every unit eventually, and you can't achieve that through just gear, it's not a fair comparison. Working towards that goal, for me, defeats the purpose of why I play any multiplayer game, which is for the challenge involved.

I don't want to try and turn perilous into routine. Though I get why some people might.

This is why I love coop games like Gears of War, or L4D.  There is no leveling up. You just jump in and try to survive against nearly impossible odds.

And that's fine. I can understand why people wouldn't want to use promotions, I'm just making the point that for promotions to surpass gear in terms of functionality, you'd have to throw a lot more time at the game than most people are willing to. It's just a game feature I make use of.

Actually it is...Take a character w/ no promotions in any of its stats and tell me how well you do?

Why do you think I haven't rushed up? Also, since I hate all the other classes other than archer, why the game is a challenge even in routine....

Because I didn't waste time grinding....so when I play it's still hard....

LOL!

Someone I play with started playing perilous days after he started playing. He has done less than 15 routine matches and he does just fine. I have 30 in each stat thats 50hp 10%attack 10%crit chance. Do you really think thats enough to make perilous easy? No its because I have good gear. If you are challenged on routine you must be using a god awful weapon or you're just not good at the game. Also you realise the bolded part is an impossible request right?

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression that there was a cap to the benefits of attribute increase.

Well to be honest the only reason why I promote so much is so that I can complain here on the forums that the game is far too easy.

It's just too much fun how this drives some people nuts when they see someone complaining about how the game is too easy while promoting so much
