Does anyone think of certain poems when they're playing the Mass Effect series? I know a lot of people relate to certain music when they play, but I wondered if anyone was reminded of poetry in the same way.

For instance, I'm always reminded of two poems when I play ME (probably because they're one of the only two poems I know). The first is part of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe:

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing,

Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, 'Lenore?'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, 'Lenore'
Merely this and nothing more."

Whenever I'm having the dream in the forest, that pops in to my head. It kind of fits.

The other one is Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, which I always think of whenever I see the destroyed planets like Palaven and Earth.

"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice."

So do you guys have any such connections, or am I simply crying out into the abyss? Go on, channel your inner Ash.

Go on

I could see Ashley quoting Heinlein's The Green Hills of Earth:

Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me
As they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet
Of the cool, green hills of Earth.

We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.

The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,

Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet ---

We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

I don't think of poetry when I play ME games. I think its great that others can do so!

I've heard that Ash was actually supposed to quote from that in ME1, originally.  But there was a problem in obtaining the rights to use it.

At any rate, a song rather than a poem, but this is what I think of with Mass Effect.

That's amazing! I'm kind of sad they couldn't use it now, it fits the game and the character so well.

That's really beautiful. I always loved that piano theme. Thank you so much for sharing.

I could imagine this one engraved on the Memorial for the Normandy SR1:

THE SOLDIERS GRAVE
BY PEARL RIVERS

Tread lightly, 'tis a soldiers grave,
A lonely, mossy mound;
And yet to hearts like mine and thine
It should be holy ground.

Speak softly, let no careless laugh,
No idle, thoughtless jest,
Escape your lips where sweetly sleeps
The hero in his rest.

For him no reveille will beat
When morning beams shall come;
For him, at night, no tattoo rolls
Its thunders from the drum.

Tread lightly! for a man bequeathed,
Ere laid beneath this sod,
His ashes to his native land,
His gallant soul to God.
