Had a discussion online with a friend from Brazil, and he mentioned that Google Translate is good enough to use for modules now -- that suggests that a wider set of international modules would be available for me to play in (I can limp in french, was fluent 20 years ago, but I'd lose anything colloquial).  Any recommendations?

Planescape: Shaper of Dreams has only translated four of it's six chapters into english. It is very well reviewed. No idea for others, I don't know if new vault has the old international modules hall of fame.

Based on the old Vault score of 9.59 with 43 votes, Der Fluch der Zwerge (The Curse of the Dwarves?) was well received. It is in multiple parts, and they scored well also. If Google does a decent job, maybe that can be used to create a translation?

Half of the fun of Google Translate used to be the unintended hilarity that often ensued. Especially any sentence involving a donkey.

I'm curious to know how this works out for you, since it seems like you'd have to keep pausing to translate everything (unless you did a translation of every conversation beforehand). Perhaps you can let us know?

Der Fluch der Zwerge translates quite literally into The Curse of the Dwarves indeed. In fact Planescape:Shaper of Dreams and Fluch der Zwerge have been done by the very same team although they please in different ways. Both include various puzzles and atmospherical writing and I could imagine any digital translator having problems with that. Nonetheless I absolutely recommend those two modules. Their creators had an excellent reputation within the german modding-community. Unfortuanetely they ceased creating NWN(2)-campaigns quite a while ago. Funny enough, as NWN was mentioned-the Shaper of Dreams started out as a sequel to a sidequest in one of the team's NWN-campaigns...

 

However, if the translator can handle it I would also recommend their third (actually first) campaign: Herz der Finsternis (Heart of Darkness) which takes place in Rashemen at a time when MotB had not even been released iirc. All of them are of high quality although they of course lack the polishing and user-created content of newer productions but writing and story completly make up for that, at least in the native language.

Fluch der Zwerge and Herz der Finsternis are both somewhat classic (in every sense) adventures while the Shaper of Dreams is-as the name suggests-a plane spanning campaign and my personal favorite.

German is probably one of the better languages for automated translation to English. It tends to be precise and unambiguous, and has had a huge influence on the development of modern English, so there are at least some common linguistic elements.

 

Translating Asian languages into English is another kettle of fish entirely, as they have vastly different linguistic structures. Hence the frequently mangled English translations seen in operating manuals for asian goods, or on signs translated for the 'benefit' of tourists. A guaranteed way to amuse yourself is by translating English phrases into Chinese or Japanese with Google Translate, then translating them back into English again to see how much they've changed.
