I have been playing ME3 and I find it clearly superior to ME2 in all respects. The story feels better, there are many side quests, I like the characters (I hate Vega, but then again I hated Kaidan too in ME1 - there always needs to be one I hate aboard). But... I think the data interface is worse now.

In ME1 - ME2, you just had to open your diary to know what to do as you progressed through a mission. Now you risk to wander cluelessly searching for that one person you need to talk to or the item you need to recover, which is a subplot of a main quest that is not recorded anywhere...

Why did they do this?...

Use the map. It shows people and "points of interest". You can switch the floors using arrows at the top of the map.

Welcome to the world of not giving a damn to plot data, brought to you by BW. Who needs a journal system that works? We have new players to cater too.

Still can't wait to see the issues as the game goes on. Btw, people have responded to you in your other thread. Including me.

The lack of proper journal was actually the one thing that got to me too. Can't say how many times I pressed "J" and then waited for something to happen... and the whole not-actually-helpful part.

The journal didn't bother me. James I didn't have a problem with

curious to read what other issues you may have as you play the game.

All the things you could say are wrong with this game and the journal is the one you focus on?

As discussed in his ME2 issues thread, he seems to have some pretty jacked priorities...

They did screw up on the journal. If you don't pay attention... no, if you don't use the map or write down the name and location of the npc who wants something from you, you may well end up crowd searching through every area of the citadel to just to turn in your mission. I disliked Vega the first time as well, I think it's because of "think you can talk and dance at the same time?" I have to say though, whether it's Ashley or Kaiden, I think they both were awkward. How far along are you right now? Any dlc?

People usually say that Vega is kind of cliché, but really, all the other characters are exotic enough, why not have a generic character aswell? Also I thought he was well done. Very believable background story.

Personally I like James as a character because he seems like a genuinely good guy - I just don't like having him suddenly dropped on us in the last moments of the trilogy. Bioware even admitted at one point, if I recall correctly, that he was there to introduce new players to the game. Since they think ME3 is the place to start the trilogy, I believe it. James is nice and all but the entire plot of ME2 was team building. The entire game was centric on us getting attached to those characters and building a cohesive unit. ME3 was the worst time to go introducing new characters to our squad.

I think that is what people generally dislike about James the most, really. People can't help but think why Bioware introduced an entirely new character to fit a role that could already be filled by like 12 other squadmates.

Honestly James was fine. He wasn't the best character, he wasn't the worst. He was fine. What bugged me is that during the last mission that pilot guy gets shot down and either shepard or someone else on the team goes a bit bananas. I would understand James since he was his friend and knew him for a long time but everyone else?

As for the journal, it does seem that people in an attempt to streamline create a bigger mess than they had. Examples include Skyrim's journal, BBC news website, many other websites. BBC mobile website is the worst offender, it keeps changing its design and it keeps getting less and less user friendly.

If I recall in a interview with Mark Meer he actually mentioned that scene. He said he did many different versions of that scene with different tones of emotion and found it funny that was what they decided to use.

It's the one thing that's objectivly horrible.

Almost everything else is way better than ME2 except the interupts and the ending.

I think he might have also been referring to the fact that the take they used resulted in a hilarious shift in tone if Steve survives, where it goes from Shepard screaming his name to expressing only the mildest amount of concern in the space of several seconds;

Spoiler

(And dang, been ninja'd by TMK)

As for Vega, I'll admit I wasn't too fond of his character when I first played ME3, but I thought that FPJr did a brilliant job in the role.

Subsequent playthroughs have actually made enjoy his character more. Sure, he often has a degree of chutzpah about him in conversations, but so does Garrus and it shows in how they try to one-up each other when talking about past battles on the Normandy. Vega's his own guy and his interaction with Shepard show that despite his snark, he has a ton of respect for them and considers them the kind of soldier he wants to be?

He's a far better character than Jacob in ME2, who despite being a similarly likeable and easy-going guy, was kinda bland when you got down to it? Sure, people often say the same thing about Kaidan, but at least Vega and Kaidan are memorable, whereas the reaction Jacob tends to garner is... "Oh yeah, he was there too?"

Well, I have just started the game. I have played like 6 hours, I have saved the Patriarch and spent most of my time doing side quests, saving the students in the biotic school and stealing reaper technology from Cerberus labs. I usually play all side quests firsts, leaving the main story for later. As for DLC, I haven't seen anything of it, I think I have one Earth expansion and something for multiplayer, but I don't think I will go multiplayer, I like single player campaigns more.

I have found numerous side quests on the citadel, but keeping track with a messed up diary is complicated beyond reasonable. I don't really like the new scanning system and the finding and retrieval of artifacts without actually going down on the planet was a disappointment. I was hoping there were some bases to attack and such, but all I had to do was scan, evade Reapers and collect stuff through a probe. Not exactly exciting. Oh well, I had fun killing Cerberus agents with bare hands, and watching their head blow up when I hit them with my precision rifle.

That was rewarding in itself.

Vega took a little getting used to, but I didn't mind him.
Watch Paragon Lost. Puts him in an even better light.

Seriously that's your only issue? What about the autodialogue or the shudder-inducing intro sequence?

You really don't even need the journal, especially the way you're playing: doing all available side-missions before doing Priority missions.  You'll pick up the various items as you do do missions / scan planets, and when you go back to the Citadel the game will highlight turn-in locations as you jog past them.  Any items (or weapon mods) you miss on a mission can be bought at the SPECTRE office.

Of the five reactions to Cortez' death shown in the clip above, only James' and FemShep's make sense.  Meer has explained why his sounds weird, but Kaidan's and Ashley's screams at the end just sound silly.

I don't think you can buy missed mods from Spectre terminal. The mission-specific items do appear there (Alien medi-gel formula etc.) but weapon mods and credits don't.

Credits, no.  But mods, yes.  I've got a few sitting in the SPECTRE terminal right now, which I haven't bothered buying because they're for weapons this particular Shepard doesn't use.

Some weapons and mods you miss will appear in the Spectre Terminal, but not all of them. I happened to have missed a few on my first playthrough and they never appeared in the Spectre Terminal.

Some mods are meant to appear in the Spectre Terminal: some armor and mods will appear after the Citadel Coup mission. Some DLC mods will appear in the Spectre Terminal after you buy the level I mod from another store first.

Weapons, armor, and mods that appear on missions that expire after a certain point (Grissom Academy, Turian Platoon Crash Site, Bomb Site) will not appear in the Spectre Terminal. You can also include any weapons/armor/mods from missions you ignored before completing Cerberus Headquarters.
