My Dearest Empress,
I wish to thank you for your latest correspondence, and I wish to respond directly to your inquiries regarding the status of the Inquisition. As you know the Inquisition was begun to combat the threat of the breach in the veil. The authority granted to the Inquisition from the writ provided by the Divine Justinia has come to an end, and now that the threat has been successfully countered the Inquisition has served its purpose and will be disbanded.
While I greatly appreciate your offer of both land and title in Orlais it is with deep regrets that I must decline. I have neither the wherewithal or the desire to participate in the Grand Game that is Orlesian politics, I wish only to return to my families modest holdings in the Free Marches and live out my remaining days with as much anonymity and peace as I can hopefully acquire given recent events.
In regards to your questions of a more personal nature, I shall address them as much as I can given my limited understanding of such matters . Do I believe that we have been abandoned by the Maker as many maintain?
I personally believe this is only our perception of such events. The Maker, like any parent, has separated themselves from us so that we might have the freedom to make our own choices, and indeed our own mistakes. The Maker has allowed us to follow our own path, much like any parent must eventually separate themselves from even their most beloved children. I believe the Maker realizes, like any good parent, that the child must eventually learn to stand on its own.
Do I believe that I was chosen by Andraste, or the Maker? I believe that in times of darkness we will always find the inspiration to band together. I believe that it is in our nature to do so, a gift from the Maker to his children. That in such times we realize that only together will we have the strength needed to prevail. I believe that if the mark had not come to me, then another symbol would have been found. That the good people of the Inquisition would have found another banner to flock too, to gather the strength required to push back the darkness. It was that collective strength, that shared resolve that triumphed. In this I was merely an instrument of that faith.
I believe Milady that all too often we stumble in our pride. We believe ourselves to be the masters and owners of Thedas. But recent events have taught me that the Veil, the barrier that separates our world from the next, is all too often weakened by our ignoble deeds. When we war with each other, when we treat our brethren with disrespect and disregard, these acts of cruelty weaken the barrier that protects our world. I would ask that you and those to consider this most carefully in your future dealings. We are all children of the Maker, milady. Whether we be landed gentry, Templar, Dalish, or Mage. When we war with each other we do naught but invite this evil to reenter our world.
I ask you and all of the others in positions of authority to consider that we are neither the owners or masters of Thedas, Milady. Merely it’s stewards, and it is my sincerest hope that all of us will realize that these recent events should serve as a warning from our true landlord.
Yours Humbly and In Faith,
Baron Magnus Trevelyan
