It'd make a nice addition to the Black Emporium patch they're (eventually) releasing (I believe it's still in beta yes?). Alternatively, the Black Emporium allows them an 'access point', so to speak, for players mid game to change their hair, whenever Bioware does (I assume they will, as it's a much requested feature) toss in a few more hairstyles.
Add more hairstyles (specially for females)

The simple answer is the two games use two different rendering engines.
That doesn't explain the stylistic choices such as sideburns on everything, pointy receding hairline on most styles, styles that are way too modern looking, and that abomination with straight across bangs that was the most horrible style in all three games (second only to the Friar Tuck) and was the only one carried over into DA:I.
I don't understand...why so many side burns? male players (or female) love so much having their male characters balding?
Is just...not every male I know have receding hairline. Why so many? expecially since the hair are shared between male and female characters. I cringe every time I find a female NPC with sideburns. Is creepy.
The receding hairline ones don't even look like an actual receding hairline, I have been thinking lately that those ones were originally meant for horned Qunari and that space is where the horn would go.

Why so many? Frosbite was made more for pew pew games, and not RPG's.
So? Hair don't grow bald patches on their own. Even buzzcuts don't need to have bald patches.
And there are feminine hair in game. look at Josephine. Morrigan. Leliana. Calpernia. Cassandra. Sera.

That would have been interesting. And much better than what the Qunari get in the hair dpartmant anytime. The stylistic decisions in this game are really something...interesting. To stay civil.

Its just a cartoon.. Ill never understand the interest in "sexy" cartoon babes.. Or the claim that "If im gonna stare at an A... Hiney... Its gonna be a chick!"... I cant take my character seriously, if her warhammer weighs twice as much as she!
Because I'm male and enjoy the idea of exaggerated assets .. I've given up on the 'to scale' argument years ago, let's face it most fantasy games don't have efficient, battle ready armor/weapons, so I've resigned myself to not expecting it. I have though come to expect developers to make games fun, not accurate and textures/models add to that fun .. this is why we have things like cartoonish outlines/exaggerated female/male bodies etc. And who wouldn't want to run into battle with a 10 foot I-Beam with an 8 ton stone at the end of it?

There are more than a few male models too with unique hair, armor, weapons and even clothing. I'm hoping they do with the emporium like some people have said here and use it as a means to introduce new hair/models etc. I have a feeling though if they do it's going to be a resource pack we may have to buy... ![]()

It's a hope many have. I hope too new hairstyle will be put in the new patch. But as I see it, the Black Emporium may be just the "preparation" to have the chance to make usable future appearance pack.
I must admit, if a hairstyles/eybrows/Skyhold outfit pack will be realeased at an honest price, I may even decide to buy it. Expecially to get rid of the PJ.

Hairstyles for men are just as bad if not worse. Who needs multiple balding hair styles? No faux mohawks? Such lack of effort, 2/10 Bioware.
Or at least tone down the broad sideburns for the two styles that are kinda normal for women.

At least one long haired style without sideburns with this mod.

Not that I'm giving them any ideas ... but yeah if it was a pack with a nice assortment ofc I'd buy it too, even though I dread yet another play through drudging through all these large uninhabited zones collecting useless foliage, but who knows maybe have cool hair will make it worth it ![]()

I miss my dreads
but yeah even a mohawk would be decent.

Hair like this would be nice, or her armor, or her curves, anything from this image really would be an excellent addition to anyones gameplay.
I recommend korean/chinese MMORPG's, you get that more than you ever wished for in that field.

Haven't you heard? Explicit feminity is wrong for Bioware. Your female inquisitor will get a d y k e hair cut. Because it is progressive.

The problem with relying on mods for more hairstyles is that this engine is apparently not as available to be "unpacked" for modders due to embedded software that has licensing issues. The modders need access before they can do anything and Bioware still needs to decide what they can do.
Hence, get used to baldies and buzz cuts. ![]()

Complex or not why Bioware which job is to make good cc. Fail at one most important part of character hair. When moders do it better for free. We don't want 15 variations off bald as hair we want hair.
And where is this?
Oh.. I agree that the available hairstyles are awful. Frankly, I don't understant it myself.
It could be the Frostbite 3 rendering engine which is designed for FPS games, such as battle field 3/4 and is very suitable to console action type games. Action games don't need hairstyles.....
BTW: Those nice black and white photos are from a marketing promo whose sole purpose was to convince buyers that the game would have the hairstyles.... but BIO came back and said their are "concept art".
Yeah... I was fooled as well.

The Mesh tech in the Frostbite 3 rendering engine may be the limiting factor here because of its perfoamce impact to the game... It's speculation but there is evidence to support this idea.
Take the scars on a person's face. If Mesh is set to Low or Medium (I think) there is no scar. Set it to High or Ultra and voila... you see a scar. BUT, when Mesh setting is on HIGH or ULTRA you get a negative performance hit.
The Bioware studio had to adapt the FPS engine to be suitable for a RPG type game, which took the 8 man years of work. It is quite possible that they were unable to "complete" the adaptation, before the Launch date. Ergo, the awful looking hair. And, there was a post/tweet by Mike Laidlaw who sait that long hair caused clipping.... which again, their programmers were unable to fix in time.
The "stylistic choices", in my view, was imposed by lack of time to do a proper job ,before the game launched.

I don't buy that. While that may explain why the hairstyles are short and low res (which you'll notice I did not mention in the post you quoted), it does not explain the side burns, pointy receding hairlines, half shaved looks , etc...It also doesn't explain why certain NPCs (like Morrigan, Blackwall, Calpernia, Cullen, etc...) have hair that's so much better than what the player gets.

Hi Cloud...ops, sorry...Gatsu...no, wait, is not an anime...(look at the game cover) Fenris! Here you are!
looking at an elf with a 2H weapon is still a little ridicolous sometimes in DAI, but at least warriors don't jump anymore...really happy about it.
