As far as I know, Darkspawn originally was 7 Magisters of Tevinter who tainted the Golden city to seek power of the Maker. They are banished by the Maker and turned into the "First" Darkspawn. But later, Darkspawn grew in numbers, thousands of them, how they got created? through birth like human or like orcs in LotR?
How Darkspawn created?

They spawn via brood mothers they create from females of various races they capture and do things to... things I won't speak of.

The darkspawn drag survivors from races down underground after raids and such. They make them into broodmothers which then in turn spawns darkspawn. The race of the females made broodmother varies what creatures they spawn. Elf - Shriek Human - Hurlock Dwarf - Genlock and Qunari - ogres. Which explains why there are so few ogres, because not many female qunari have been in contact with darkspawn. Exactly how they turn them into broodmothers i am not sure of, but it seems very gruesome.

Just want to add, if I'm not mistaken, in "The Calling"..
Hope that helps.

Not sure on the process for the original ones, but later broodmothers are forced into eating darkspawn flesh and any others captured with them.

I'm wondering if maybe the magisters weren't the only ones to physically enter the Golden City but actually led a number of Tevinter mages there so the initial # of darkspawn would have been > 7.
Or when they came back to Earth there was an initial corruption period. Who knows.

Is there a codex entry for that?

The spoiler block thing? No. It is just something you come across, get some comments on and then it is never brought up again. I'm sure if you dig around on YouTube, someone out there has a recording that has it. Tried finding an image, but my google-fu is failing me.Is there a codex entry for that?

I think it might be a part of the corruption. Theres gotta be some gross stuff involved.

Yeah Hespith in DA:O has this insane blubbering about the process, from her perspective.
"First day, they come and catch everyone.
Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it’s another girl’s turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hate it as she is violated.
Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she’s become the beast.”
