Of course ME 4 engine has been selected already, but what about using Elite: Dangerous engine for ME 5 or something? I've been playing a bit of Elite lately and I keep thinking to myself.... gosh, this engine would be perfect for Mass Effect purposes. Just change shipmodels, make some places and maybe reduce the amount of systems from near infinite to something like manageable like 200 or so.

E:D develpment roadmap has 1st person stuff coming up so theoretically speaking you could, as the protagonist, order your navigator to go to a planet of your selection, orbit it, look with binoculars or whatever, shoot some probes, shoot some orbital ordinance down, take Mako and call in orbital support from surface, all seamlessly in same engine without pesky loading screens.

Then the reapers would warp in and start descending on the planet. You could stealthily board one while its still in orbit, plant some homing devices, get out and see how your homing device attracted nukes to the center of the city you were saving in random encounterish manner not unlike far cry outpost thing. Or, you could call in the allied fleet to fight the invasion before it lands, or, you could go to ground and man a heavy anti-spacecraft-BFG-kinda thing, or, let them land and fight the invasion on the streets with some krogan rapid deployment forces..

Ok my master race imagination is getting out of hand again. Just think about it, please? Oh, and I realize this probably won't fit inside a console shell before 2020 2030.

EA has invested in Frostbite. EA is not going to change that. Every development studio that EA owns is going to be using or migrating to Frostbite for the foreseeable future, at least the next ten years and possibly longer.

It's quite simple, really.  EA adds to a games budget (like most companies), when a game fits to certain set of specifications. Frostbite is one of them, so is having a multiplayer component, and connection to Origin. If any company under EA decides against one or more of these, their budget is docked. So no, ME will be under Frostbite until EA decides against supporting the engine. It will also have an online, multiplayer component and connect to Origin (through the ME/DA servers).

Actuaslly they have 2 new engine's actually given they have Ignite too which they use for their sports games like Fifa. Obviously this won't be used here but it's not the only engine EA has invested in. Besides I think ME being on the Frostbite engine will do it a huge favour. I mean look at the graphics for the Battlefield games. Very high quality IMO and if ME looks anything near as good as that then we're in for a treat when the game launches. I have to admit also that Inquisition has reinforced my opinion that this will work out well for ME too. Although DA is a different type of game it shows it can still be a quality engine and a versatile one.

Right, but the point remains: EA will only use the in-house developed game engines for their games. They will not license a game engine from another company, and they will not use any 'open source' game engine.

ME 3 will be the last game Bioware ever makes that uses a 'third party' game engine like Unreal Engine.
