Hello everyone,

I am doing my first play through. And all I can say is wow, what an amazing game. Completely blown away. The game has such an epic atmosphere. So I don't want to miss anything, and yet, I do want to keep something for later..?:

I am level 17 now and just did Into the abyss. About to do Wicked eyes, wicked hearts. I still haven't touched Exalted plains, Emprise du lion or Emerald graves. And I am actually thinking of saving those areas for my second play through. Partly to not over level and partly because I want to have those places to look forward to. Without spoiling anything, is this a good idea or is it a major mistake to not touch on some areas the first play through?

Thanks for all advice!

I'd say save them for your next run.  There's no harm in keeping your first run shorter, and focusing on the main story.  Added bonus- your second run might be smoother since you're used to game mechanics, what tactics work better with certain enemies, etc.

All of the areas are gorgeous, have secrets to discover, and have some nifty side quest chains, but they aren't essential to the main story.  Leave yourself something to discover next time. :)

Be assured that there is no one single correct way to play the game, so skip or complete as your O-C heart desires (or allows).

Seconded.  I totally skipped Emprise du Lion in my first playthrough (and barely touched the Emerald Graves/Hissing Waste).  It meant my second playthrough was a vastly different one.

Only thing about skipping areas is the merchants.  If you're crafting a lot, the merchants in Hissing Wastes and Emprise du Lion have the tier 3 schematics.  One merchant is easy to get to, the other will require some work.

Save them. Exalted Plains gives you a little bit of context for Wicked Hearts, but I'm coming around to the idea of saving zones for different playthroughs.

The only issue is companion quests. Solas's quest, for example, is in the Exalted Plains. If you're rich on Power though it's definitely viable to just unlock the zone and beeline for his quest and do nothing else.

I unlocked and then completely forgot about the Hissing Wastes in my first playthrough :D

Not like there is much to do in the wastes anyway.

As others have said, just save them for another playthrough. You should definitely hit up the Emerald Graves in your second play. It's got some really neat lore stuff in it (if you care about that kind of thing).

It does have the best schematics in the game.

I completely forgot I'd unlocked Exalted Plains until after all quests it referenced was done and over with.  Exalted Plains, Emprise Du Lion, and the Emerald Graves are the three I always forget to go do things in.

Doing those areaa would definitely over level you. I did nearly everything I could (I left two dragons alive) before doing Here Lies the Abyss and Wicked Eyes, and as a result I was level 23 before I started them. With recommended level ranges of 12-15, those quests are pretty amusing at level 23.

I didn't do Graves, Wastes, Emprise, or Oasis the first time.

My only suggestion is if you want to do Solas or Vivi's personal quests, you need to go to the plains.

Sad how these areas have no main plot content in them.

This is what makes the main story feel really short.

Emerald Graves is 11-14 i think, with a few 16 red templar knights.  I'd suggest clearing that or doing Wicked Hearts which you should be high enough level for.  Emprise du Lion is 18+ so save that for later.

The only thing about skipping the Oasis is you won't get certain buffs for your character but they aren't critical for completing the main story.

And on the other side, this is why I'm having so much fun. Each time I play I find new areas and new quests. It keeps it from becoming stale during those longer playthroughs.

And I find that there are fun sidequests in areas with little story content that you could easily pretend is story-related.

I mean it is what you make it, you know?

True. I didn't do the shards until my third playthrough. I did find the quest more fun than expected once I focused on it.

This last part is my whole point as it goes against what makes Bioware games great. I should not have to "pretend" that content is story related in a Bioware game.

DAI has more in common with a MMO than your typical cinematic storytelling Bioware title.

If you have the templars then yes skip them but if you have mages you kinda need to go through Empise du lion to complete a certain quest. As you say its your first playthough so having an advantage will help .

@Majestic jazz

DAI as more in common with BG1. BG1 had the same type of story layout. Not everything fed into the main quest. So it is not going aganist what made Bioware games great. There are plently of quests in all of Bioware games that have no connection to the main story. For example, why was the warden engaging in the Crime Wave quests or tracking down Gaxkang? What does helping Dagna have to do with the main story?

The same in DA2. What is the point in helping Clara and the werewolves? What is the point in doing the Dark Epiphany quest? Or Secret Rendezvous? None of these quests have anything to do with the main story. So what did the player do to tie those quests to the main story?

@OP,

Do the areas in whatever order you wish, but be warned that some areas will level you up faster.

Emerald Graves is 11-14 i think, with a few 16 red templar knights.

North of the river there has level 20 rifts.

What I did in my 2nd playthrough was to go Exalted Planes and then only do Dalish camp related quests, plus Solas companion quest.

That way I skipped boring warzone related parts of the area, played more interesting Dalish camp area, got inquisition agent and resolved Solas quest.

Can you quit saying this?

DAI is no shorter than DAO in terms of main plot relevant quests. They're just spaced apart more depending on how many side quests you do... like DAO.

I'm something like lv22 and soon'ish done with Exalted Plains.

Haven't done Hissing Wastes or Emerald Graves yet.

Both Plains and my previous area, Emprise Du Lion, felt a bit boring due to overleveling.

Feeling tempted to skip the other areas and save them for another playthrough as well.

That's like asking the tide to stop.  Maybe if he posts it in every single thread he can, he will convince himself.
