Well if this game bombs I'll be glad to laugh and say, "That's what you get." I have no sympathy for anyone who approaches game development that way. Like, why is the dude even at his job? Sounds like this industry isn't for him.

Damn, I have had my reservations about this game for a while, but this really puts the nail in the coffin for me. I'm also slightly unsettled by the developer's response to the criticisms of length.
I will agree with the Forbes article that if this game is gonna be this short, it had damn well better be perfect, especially with the $60 price tag. Bioshock Infinite was shorter, but it made up for it in story quality. That said, I highly highly doubt that The Order's story will be anywhere near on par to Bioshock's. As a result, I expect it to fail and fail pretty hard.

Should've copped that Guilty Gear Xrd. Unless it's terrible.
A lack of my main/waifu Baiken in it killed a good deal of my interest for it, that and the concern of another revision being released at some point.
I still may get it at some point when it's cheap, I did get the character that was temporarily "free" during the first week of release just in case...

As simple as that. I don't understand people that want to vicariously live out their creative ambitions through game development. It just ends up souring the experience.

Now now, overly cinematic and short are two different things. Final Fantasy XIII is extremely cinematic, but it's a forty hour game and that's just the main quest.
Not saying that cinematic is always good, but it's a different issue than mere shortness (though there's definite overlap if we're looking at work involved).

Yeah I think in this case, since the director seems to find video games such a hassle to work with, the game was designed to be short consciously, regardless of the cinematics. Metal Gear Solid in general is way too watchy at times but you still get a good amount of hours actually playing.

I agree that if it were 5-6 hours it would ridiculous, but I think it's worth pointing out that the creators of the game has said shortly after this was said that this wasn't the case, and that players would definitely need more then 5-6 hours to beat the game.
They failed to clarify how long that would be though. If the game actually takes longer than 5-6 hours, then it would be better for the developers to say how long they estimate it would take.

Not only that, he immediately talked afterward how he played two hour games that were better than sixteen hour games.
That really just says to me that if it isn't five or six hours exactly, then it's pretty damn close.

Hyperbithero did a good video on this a while back; seems like the design philosophy (heavily emphasizing story and visuals at the expense of gameplay) was misguided at the start. The project director literally said in an interview, "Gameplay is something that . . . it's a game, we make games, we can't get around it." Not a recipe for success.
The gameplay was too video-gamey, not cinematic enough. ![]()

Some lovely quotes from reviewers that really make me feel good about owning a PS4.
GameSpot: "What, then, to make of The Order: 1886? It is, at best, perfectly playable, and lovely to look at and listen to. But it is also the face of mediocrity and missed opportunities. A bad game can make a case for itself. A boring one is harder to forgive."
EGM: "The Order: 1886 is a paper-thin PS4 launch title delivered 15 months behind schedule. It’s nowhere near as profound or innovative as it thinks it is—the epitome of all style and no substance."
Giant Bomb: "There are things here worth checking out, but the action feels half-cocked and you'll be finished with it in an afternoon. I won't pretend to guess at how much $60 means to you, dear reader, but I will say that The Order is a middling experience with a couple of bright flashes that only serve to remind you that this could be a more interesting game if more of its ideas were fully formed. If you're bent on seeing The Order for yourself, you should probably rent it."
"This game has to be fun before it's pretty." - Bungie employee. (After playing Destiny, I assume he's no longer with the company.)
Game developers must take notice of this. Games need to be fun to play and have lasting replay value if you're going to charge top dollar. The obsession with graphics and how some developers continue to prioritize presentation over gameplay and substance, is what leads to games like The Order... and Destiny.
