A lot of things sound juvenile when you strip it to a simplistic, bare minimum. I don't really care to validate my entertainment by calling it art but I don't think video games can simply be summed up as "playing with interactive toys shooting **** up".

This almost seems like a tacit admission that the stereotype of games as being for overgrown manchildren is basically accurate; what demographic is it that plays with toys, if not children?
Also, it frustrates me when people make arguments like this in one context, but in other contexts will go on to use the term 'game' as a genuine honorific. If games in general are nothing but toys, why the heck would it matter whether or not titles like Gone Home, Dear Esther or Proteus really are games? All you'd be saying is that they're not actually toys or something. That doesn't sound like a very devastating criticism of a media product.
Games are art, not all art is appreciated by everyone, and not all art is appreciated by someone.
In 1886's case, it'll win some people over. Those that like it for its art style, graphical quality, setting, whatever other reason.
Others will not like it for those same things, its length, its gameplay style, the frequency of QTE's or cutscenes, etc etc
Its down to the gamer. If 1886 is getting pooped on by loads of people, it must mean it doesn't appeal to quite a bit of people.
Maybe one day it will. You can say that about any game as you can any art.
Can't wait to get this game in a few months. I'm a little bummed out that it's so short, but I'm sure i'll have a good time with it regardless.

I generally don't tend to care about reviews or pay any attention to them, but I can't ignore what I've seen or read so far. I guess I'll just play this in a few months once it's cheap enough to not matter that much if it's bad or not. I still want to give it a try.

What is with the gaming industry now? They are releasing more and more hyped up and expensive NG duds.
Is this the start of stagnation?
Spec Ops The Line was 4 hrs+ and that didn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of it personally.
Amen to that.
But then again, the game is a massive deconstruction of shooters and an examination of PTSD+concept of heroism with a lot of unexpected twists disguised as a generic military shooter. Hell, even the marketing campaign showed it to be another run-of-the-mil shoot-em up hero fantasy which added more to the sudden left turn the game took.
The Order, on the other hand, is straight forward and it could have been a lot better.

I swear, people that complain about the stagnation in games better not pick up some of the sequels to those stagnant games, whether its CoD, Destiny, or whatever else is out there

The real reason that The Order is boring is because. Boring is more cinematic then fun. Just like 30 FPS/60 FPS.

Just because a company has numerous successful games behind them does not mean that their next game will be good.
As an example, BioWare and DA2/ME3.
