Installing Fallout 3 GOTY. Yes, I have Win 7, so I know there are problems

I load the game, get to the title screen, it crashes.

I believe there's some sort of file I have to overwrite?

I did a search and found some forums with a few possible solutions

http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=1317680

http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=1328904

https://steamcommuni...36718672479298/

If you provide more info on your PC we may be able to narrow down the search pattern.

If you have a CPU with more than 2 cores/threads

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3

Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2

FO3's engine is funky with anything having more than two cores. This .ini edit will limit the game to using only two threads. It should improve stability a great deal.

The other avenue is you've modded your game wrong, though that would usually only crash upon loading the game, not in the menu screens.

Thank you the core issue was on the tip of my tongue but it was just escaping me for some reason.

Main issue when I played Fallout 3 was with GFWL, kept crashing the game randomly but once I found a mod that disabled it the game ran fine..... well fine for a game using that particular engine.

GFWL was an abomination and I'm appalled as long as it did. Good riddance. I had to turn to using a modded .exe to even play the game without it crashing every half hour or so. The only game I had to practically pirate after already having bought it just to play it in a stable fashion. Thank the modders almighty with stability mods that cleared out most of the remaining game issues ... after those the only time the game would crash if I messed up loadorders or incorrectly installed/uninstalled mods that messed up savegames.

It's the .ini file you need to edit for the multi core fix (fallout.ini)

as Fidite said you can find it in the following directory on your hard drive  <Drive>My Documents\My Games\Fallout3

It's an .ini file, not an .exe.

Thank you for all the help guys

I followed a fix vid, actually got all the way into project anchorhead, luckily no crashes so far, all my dlc seems to have worked.

Is any of the dlc level restricted?

I was planning to do ancoridge/pitt/lookout before starting the main quest

so far project anchoridge is really sweet, I mean a pre war sim!

I love the pre war aspects of Fallout

No level restrictions.

In fact Anchorage and The Pitt are brilliant DLCs to play early since they don't depend on your already collected gear and grant prety nifty (and sometimes blatantly overpowered) gear after completion.

Wouldn't advise doing Point Lookout without some really hard-hitting guns and lots of ammo though ...

Thanks :) halfway through Anchorage, then I was gonna do the Pitt.  Of all the dlc's, Zeta by far seems the most......bizzare.

Whoever said to have the FOMM installed, is a total genius! I would have been pulling my hair out by now.  :wub:

Does anyone have any good mods? I'm on the nexus, I so far have

*hunter's ridge

* motorcycle mod ( gotta get the parts)

* black duster

* binocholors............that's honestly a mod. A pair of binocholars. Like....something so simple isn' in the wasteland? All the pairs of bionocolars went up in nuclear fire or something?  <_<

* clear skies.........I had no clue how icky the sky was until I put that baby in

FOOK2 or FWE, whichever looks better to you. Warning, massive mods.

I really want FWE, but is that like NV's uber hardcode mode? I like the idea of starting in the wastes, but I'm a very easy-casual mode gamer lol
