Elves in DAI seem two feet from anorexia...I love play with them, and luckily at least the female elf, even if her arms and legs seem, with the total absence of muscular mass, a stick insect, with armour on she is almost cute. (no muscle mass on arms seem a trait all female share in BioWare...only Qunari are better, but they are the only females that have at least normale arms. Sad, for a race that should be a big mass of muscle)

The male elf...sigh. poor souls. The arms are sucked inside, and broken. Only few armour (all those that don't have the PJ under, like the gray warden's armour, or the Dalish ones) don't have this problem. Sad thing is, in game we see others male elves, and not one of them have the same problem. They have toned thights and broad shoulder, with a slim waist. Slim phisiques, but elegant. Than there is the Inquisitor that seem undeveloped.

And the worst thing is...nothing have been even remotely said about it by the devs. Nothing.

Speaking of the broken arms I know the male elves suffer from their arms being sunken into their body but has anyone else had problems with the female elves arms just going haywire during cut scenes? Mine would be going through her face or pulling  a Fenris and going through someones chest half the time.

I dont understand why everyone is loving the elves from DA:O? Like, my Wardens hairstyle hid her ears so that you couldn't even tell she was an elf?? She just looked 100% human so I always thought it was stupid that NPCs refer to her as a knife-ear cuz like how did they even know?? She just looks like a short human. I like that in DA2 they were at least trying to give each race distinguishable features, and even if they weren't perfect at least they looked like a separate species. The only big issue I had with them was that whoever did their makeup was either color blind or just set it to random, since pretty much every elf had their Vallaslin, lipstick and eyeshadow clash. (I still have war flashbacks of Oranas purple lipstick/green eyeshadow combo and Arianni and her nude lipstick that did not match her skin tone. Good god)

Did people actually like that horrible, square body from DA:O or is this a "best of the worst" kind of situation?

first of all elves are supposed to be beautiful from human's point of view. We actually have entire quest in DA2 which is based on this fact.

Now tell me who of you actually like those satellite like ears? I found them repulsing. Pointy ears doesn't mean they look like a freaks. What I would imagine is human size ears but instead of upper arc they would be pointy. And thanks goddess for long hair in DAO which covers them.

And with the faces? Average elf should look like human super model bathed in makeup and digitally enhanced. But in game humans actually look much better regardless those ears...

Elves should be good looking, or at least very attractive to the mayority of humans. So, or humans in the DA universe must have canonically a very particular fetish (like with the elves in DA2, where I romanced Fenris only for the voice, just like Garrus, because even if he was the most "normal" looking elf in DA2, he still have some freakish elements in him), or elves should just respect the rules and be human looking but with enchanted quality that humans usually find attractive.

Beautiful eyes (I think having them having shiny eyes would have been a good thing to enchante the non-human vibe without being freak, since even the lore say elves have shiny eyes in the dark), petite, willowy but attractive body (that is different from almost anorexia) and younger looking appearance (this have been done, since even with the most wrinkled complexion, elves till look quite young, or at least younger than expected). All qualities that are attractive, and can make the race different, but have to be well balanced.

if the elves don't respect those (or most) of those canon aspect, than they should have been a totally different race, and not elves.

Fenris looked like he was copied in from a generic anime. Complete with the haircut and the emo personality.

Fenris didn't hurt himself or wallow in self-pity. He got depressed at times as everyone would if they were in the same situation but it was never emo. I think he could've used a better haircut then the one they gave him and it would've improved peoples' perception of him.

On topic, the only people complaining about elves are idiots that want Dragon Age to blend in with every other fantasy pile of crap ever created. People that are upset with the DA elves don't want the game to stand on its' own or succeed.

If you love Dragon Age IGNORE the people making these threads.

I rather like that they do not fit entirely with the most-fairest-of-all intrepretation I often see when it comes to elves in fiction. It adds a bit more to them. In my opinion, them looking like that would be a bit odd considering:

The Dalish live their lives on the move, living by what they can catch and preserve which can all depend on the lay of the land or how good the game is. They might place a higher emphasis on practicality and so not maintain their hair in styles but short or in a bun, maybe decorated with something sometimes.

The City Elves, depending on which city they live in, are often poor and are likely not able to purchase food in such quantities that they can maintain a healthy physical look especially as some farmers and humans cannot even do that. Not to mention the sort of menial work  they would perform would likely wear them down physically.

I like what they've managed with Inquisition when it comes to how elves look; they do not look entirely like humans but they do not look too drastically the opposite. Do I think there is room for some adjustment and improvements? Yes, but overall I like the look.

*raises hand*

I like these larger ears, as it hardly ever made sense to me people would be "oooh these elf ears, so different" when the entire difference boiled down to a slightly sharper tip, in certain other franchises.

Given popularity of elves in World of Warcraft, this larger ears design doesn't seem repulsive to many other people as well.

What I think is funny is that it seems BioWare knows that people don't/wont like the elf bodies and would not find them attractive. That's why the romanceable elves except Merrill(post body narrowing) has their body either changed (Sera) or disguised and made to look like they have normal proportions (Fenris with his shoulder widening feather spikes and Solas who shares the same mesh as the male elf inquisitor but has thick baggy clothing that makes him look normal).

Yeah; I dunno if Fenris' armour design was intentional thing, but I am pretty curious about what reasons there were to put Sera's head on human body instead of having her look like every other elf in the game. I'm not sure if it was "people wouldn't like it" thing because Merrill had regular elf appearance and still gathered pretty wild following... so, just curious.

I like the elves the way they are.

Well, I would if the male elf PC had Solas's shoulders and chest...

I guess I'm a minority here, but I thought the DAII elves were the best I've seen in any game/fantasy movie yet. I'm so tired of the Tolkien/DnD elves. They were a refreshing, almost alien take on elves.

(to Frond) While I do like diversity amongst the designs of fantasy races, I felt the DAII direction were a bit too different from how I've gathered they were established as being viewed in Dragon Age universe which is another reason I prefer the DAI direction.

Tolkien elves do not look like DnD ones. They are muscular, fit and strong. Unfortunately you won't find it in the movies.
I agree, DAII elvhes looked the best with their more original facial features. The only thing I would like to see changed or at least left to us is body size. There should be an option to increase muscularity.

Altmer, Mer in general are alien, beautiful, unique. Not to mention they resemble their Morrowind incarnations.  Ah, wonderful, wonderful!

I totally agree, but looking different does not mean that they should look ugly.... Again, this is what Bioware did well in this game. The elves look different, but they are not abominations. Overall it comes down to personal preference.

You know, if they listen and re-design it for the next DA they're going to get hit with the 'stop redesigning everything already!' complaints. This is really a self-inflicted problem caused by not being self-assured on their design decisions, chopping and changing things causes a dissonance. There's already topics bemoaning the Qunari re-design, the Qun belief changes, the 'humanisation' of them and the lack of variety in terms of views now that everything is all kissy-wissy in favour of promoting equality over conflict.

That's why DA:I is a pretty amazing game if you think of it as an analysis of the life of a DA dev - Origins; Confident, slow burner / 2 - over confident, pushy, radically different when it didn't need to be / Inquisitions - a crisis of faith and an attempt to find their feet again. >_>

4 should be a return to form then. But, yeah on a serious note; whoever the director of the design and writing teams are, he needs to remind them not to chop and change so much.

Pretty must this. However, I don't understand what Qun changes were made, it seems the same as always. Only thing I know of was a few Qunlat words re-translated. An example is Ataashi, it originally translated to "Dragon", but now it's "The Glorious Ones." Other then that, I don't see a difference in Qun belief.

They are not ugly! They represent alien beauty. They are not supposed to look like mannish races. They are first and foremost 'Mer' and they do not enjoy being called 'elves'. If they are ugly to some then well, nobody said that 'elves' must be pretty.

Elven faces in DAI are good.

Elven body in DAI on the other hand, needs serious fixing, especially the males.

Indeed. These bodies are worth ten abominations. Even BioWare has acknowledged their ugliness by making Solas's attire to widen his shoulders and reduce glued effect (still presented though).

Have you not heard about the objective taste truth; accordingly to a great binary philosopher Suirim d'Superior, Mer are beautiful. You can read about it in his work 'Abbot, Bishop and Abrahadabra'.

but seriously, we should agree to disagree.
