+1 to the 'I like DA:I elves' camp. IMHO DA:I managed to nail the balance between DA:O's welterweights and DA2's mutants from outer space. I was never massively impressed by the fact that elves and dwarves in DA:O had the same accents as well, but now they've kept the DA2-introduced Welsh and Irish accents for them, they feel more like a defined race now.

I've made my peace with the Qunari too. Horns felt like a step too far for me after DA:O managed to go for 90+ hours without a single mention of them but I'm happy with they way they've been retconned (particularly the bit about how horned Qunari tend to think hornless ones are a bit unsettling and hence tend to be placed in positions of authority). My only real issue is Iron Bull's odd proportions.... He has the smallest head of any Qunari in all three games. Reminds me of those Koopa Troopers from that terribad mario film.

So the Qunari originally have horns or was it a later addition in DA2 ? Because Sten was hornless in DAO... and in DA2 the Qunari with horns showed up and didn't really like the design change. Iron Bull is a bit too much for me. I wonder how he manages to enter a narrow door with those horns...

I absolutely loathe The Elder Scrolls' way of designing elves... There, I said it. Now I can sleep in peace.

The Elves are fine as they are now, they are a good enough bridge between human and something alien, that they can be distinguished from humans but still be appealing to humans.

That's how its done.

Okay, I admit, a bit too human here. But still.

DAO was 2/3 what I like, DA2 was 1/3 what I like, and DAI was 1/2 what I like. Come on Bioware, you can do it.

They are pretty ugly, but they're one of the most original designs for Elves out there.

IIRC the horns and stuff was originally planned for the qunari at design stage but didn't make it in DAO because of wearable headgear (similar to how you couldn't get ears like NPC elves because it'd clip with the helmet models that the NPC elves generally wouldn't wear) or something to this effect. How accurate is this story (if any) is hard to say at this point.

Yeah; I dunno if Fenris' armour design was intentional thing, but I am pretty curious about what reasons there were to put Sera's head on human body instead of having her look like every other elf in the game. I'm not sure if it was "people wouldn't like it" thing because Merrill had regular elf appearance and still gathered pretty wild following... so, just curious.

Possibly they just didn't want Sera to get dressed up as a Dalish? Yet didn't want to leave her short of armour options either?

This makes sense, thinking about it there isn't many non-dalish armour models that come elf-sized.

Every companion has a unique body model, so while Sera doesn't look like a PC elfquisitor, she doesn't have the same exact body model as a human either.

As for the qunari, I actually like how they look in this game. If the weird head-body size ratio were fixed (with the current headsize, a hornless qunari looks like they have a tiny head), I think it would be really good.

I liked the way my elven main character looked. If Bioware wants to tinker again they should, but I think its WAY better than DA2.

Like other Fantasy and RPG series, the Elves in the DA series could do with their own, unique hairstyles.

I quite liked the Origins elves, and was appalled when I first saw Athenril DA2--more specifically, when I saw her head from the side, she looked like some kind of deformed horse-person. Merrill looked nice though. The Inquisition elves looked good for the most part, like Solas and Abelas, with a few exceptions like the elf in Bull's quest.

(Also, I like the Elder Scrolls elves--they are not ugly! Well, most of them...)

Elf character design is one of those things that will never make everyone happy.

No, she does. There's no "sera" version of the regular armour models, so if you put her in any of these her shape is 100% identical with that of female human. Same for the nude shape. I'm too lazy to check her 'unique' armour model but pretty sure it doesn't have any real difference from the human shape, either -- you don't see her shape changing when switching between "her" armour and one of the generic ones.

It's the same deal with other companions. As such they aren't really unique shape-wise by any stretch.

Originally the devs were going to have all Qunari have horns, but DAO's engine and their limited resources couldn't work with it well enough so they made Sten hornless as well as the Tal-Vashoth. Then when DAII allowed them to implement it they made it so that Sten is a hornless Qunari.

The horns were always intended. The hornless feature was added as an element of the lore so that Sten's appearance could remain the same.

They did end up saying though that all the Tal-Vashoth we met in DAO were horned Qunari who "broke" their horns off their head as an act of defiance -- which I felt was a rather weak thing to say. Some, perhaps, but all? We go up against a few dozen in DAO total and I think it would've been better to have some hornless Qunari be Tal-Vashoth as well in the justification -- that is to say, some were formerly horned, others were never horned.

Perhaps that would even owe to why they say hornless Qunari are destined for greatness in the modern times. A sort of means to control them so that they don't go rogue.

I guess I'm a minority here, but I thought the DAII elves were the best I've seen in any game/fantasy movie yet. I'm so tired of the Tolkien/DnD elves. They were a refreshing, almost alien take on elves.

That would have been fine to me if elves hadn't looked normal and "pretty" in the first game. If they'd been human colored Na'vi all along then whatever. House elves in Harry Potter were fine because they looked like that from the beginning and were never intended to be the LotR style elves. DA elves were clearly meant to be LotR style elves fallen from grace culturally.

I have to wonder why so many people don't like elves as "beautiful humans with pointy ears" yet don't say anything about dwarves being short, stout, bearded caucasian humans in everything. :?

I'm a fan of the nasal bridge going straight up and not curving in.  Otherwise, it's just a human with pointy ears.

...actually, in the DA2 version she looks like a dog. Or one of the Avatar alien who forgot the blue paint. Or a gentler looking goblin. Surely doesn't seem an Elf.

Really, like Nelfa said: why people are ok with Dwarfes being the usual looking muscled short humans with beards, but want the elves freakish looking? That's something I can't understand. They are already shorter and slimmer than humans, with pointy ears, bigger, shiny eyes, yourger looking. What else should they look like? they are elves, if they where another, new race, I could understand, but really... they are elves: what make them different from humans is the culture, not how "alien" they should look.

The problem with this is that it goes against the lore, that states that humans (I assume normal humans) find some Elves quite attractive. No normal person would find the Felicia Day on the right to be attractive, and if you do please do not reproduce, step back from the gene pool. j/k..

I don't get it. We have an idea of what elves and dwarves look like as they have a common appearance across different forms of media and thousands of stories, why make something weird and random and call it an elf? Why not just make up your own races and be as creative as possible? I thought all the races in Mass Effect were great and looked well designed (rather than blatantly ripping off Avatar which was very popular at the time and calling yourself original).

So do i. I generally like a lot of elves types in games, but Dragon age and Elder scrolls they just look weird..

Here are my generic Elves

Not very mythological but if you want "real" elves then they are tiny..

Because everything these days must be unique (even if it's bad) Developers seem to be obsessed with i can make it "better" even if they cannot..

This is a Folletto where I live, not an Elf. I'm not sure this difference is contemplated outside of Italy, in truth. I never found a good translation for the word.

I think it's a leprechaun in English. Or better yet a gnome.
