I understand the joke, but I can't help myself from correcting it (oh the irony).

It could be a compulsion, but I fail to see any anxiety/negative emotion that would result in that behavior manifesting. Of course, that doesn't stop it from being obsessive compulsive personality disorder, but even then it's not really that clear cut.

Carry on...

Joke is still internally consistent if the guy said he had "self diagnosed OCD", self diagnosing is common amongst certain tumblrite groups (which is where the image is from) but considering your field of knowledge, I'm not surprised it bugged you. :P

I know /pol/ was behind #EndFathersDay and the whole free bleeding phenomenon, but I'm not sure about #KillAllMen.

It wouldn't surprise me though, #manspreading is actual oppression and a legitimate issue in the eyes of SJWs, I can see many jokes from 4chan, reddit, etc. being taken literally.

What's amusing about "manspreading" is that same people against it are also in favor of "fat acceptance".

We big nose people are really oppressed in society. What we really need is a movement to condemn and shame those who look down on us big nose people. I demand it NAOW!

Surprisingly enough, this forum had a good thread on gamergate in the past.

I can see the mods leaving this one up as long as we don't get too much into the leading characters of the mess.  Taking jabs at the SVU epsiode and only talking about non personnal events seems to have kept them happy.

Never seen it, usually they got locked extremely fast. Which pissed me off a lot, though not surprising considering that some of the staff of Bioware are riding in the SJW train.

Brave to talk about this kind of topic on the BSN. I fully endorse it though.

I love how some of the people that were spewing the "gamers are misogynist, terrorist rapists" rhetoric for months were complaining how the gaming community was portrayed on SVU. It's like "Dude, they just said everything you guys in the gaming media were telling everybody for months, now you're upset?"

The notion that male gamers are "misogynist' is a hoot to anyone who's seen them act around female gamers. I've seen female gamers whom were at best a 4 or 5 out of ten having a bunch thirsty male orbiters on game forums. Then there's dudes buying all kinds of things for them in MMOs in some misguided attempt to win over their attention and favor.

The ep would've been more accurate if the two dudes who assaulted "gamer gurl" were instead trying to kiss her ass and fighting over her attention.

In other new The Escapist has either promoted or contracted 4 women in the last week. Someone should tell them that gamers wont stand for this.

The argument about that sort of thing, Seb, is that those guys are not valuing the women as people, but as figures, perhaps even in a minor form, idols to be appeased.

And where the misogyny comes in, is when these guys are spurned for acting in such a slavish (or outright pathetic) way, enough of them are soured that they go from white to black, utterly condemning women for their devious and man-luring ways, etc etc.

To many feminists, the whole notion of the first paragraph is, if not actual mysogyny, it at least perpetuates the existence of misogyny. A "if you just treated us as people and not objects of affection, we wouldn't have the hatred of women (treated as an object of evil) in the first place".

I'm saying this as someone who can understand and has seen the concept in practice, though I don't appreciate the widely accusatory conclusions that many of the social left place on people. In most cases in gaming, the guy just likes a woman and likes the potential of knowing that women to various degrees (from friendship to romance) and hating women is about the furthest things from his mind. That it can be a corrupted line of thought shouldn't matter when taken on the human face-to-face level. You shouldn't expect misogyny from a community that just enjoys women gaming alongside them. The SVU episode was such an inaccurate portrayal of everything, including the expereinces of all gaming women I know. They've told me their negative experiences and it seems to still not match anything like I've read or seen in media as some 'truth of how gamers are'.

The ep would've been more accurate if the two dudes who assaulted "gamer gurl" were instead trying to kiss her ass and fighting over her attention.

Yep. Most situations would have had one of the following be the gist of the encounter (and of course, not in a washroom):

1)Kissing her ass and fighting over her attention, from subtle to overt ways (this can be something that a women either enjoys or is disgusted by)

2)Regarding her as an outsider, but rarely in a hostile way (gaming used to have this more broadly 1-2 decades ago and earlier, but now it more likely to occur in specific environments like tournaments)

3)Regarding her as an insider and... well, that's it. Its actually rather easy for a woman to be part of the in group in gaming now, and difficulties of the 2000s were still overblown, though more present. #3 here is the most likely outcome, actually. There may be elements of #1 and #2, but most gamers are mature enough to just go on and game.

I'm not saying that women don't have difficulties in gaming. I think they do, and I trust the stories that women have told me in person. But I do think that there's too much of media that is exploiting such difficulties to a ridiculous level, and it isn't for an actual benevolent purpose.

This is one of those cases where media tries to find an evil within its society (in this case Western/American culture) and instead of going into the dark where the real monsters exist, they pick off the easy fruit of moral outrage. And they're allowed to, because well, there's SOME threat there, right? Somewhere!

-D&D WAS a threat to Christianity as those Christians saw it. It exposed people to alternate views of both fantasy and reality (through mythology). How dare they!

-Gaming IS an encouragement for SOME to commit violence. Of course they're disposed to it anyway, but that doesn't change that some games have sometimes been part of someone committing violence.

-And there is a more male focused, exclusionary environment in gaming, against women.

For that last one, it apparently doesn't matter that gaming is getting better every year. It apparently doesn't matter that in the vast majority of experiences with women gaming, the most they'll get is trolling about their gender instead of anything else (even get the white, male, straight, etc etc guy in front of trolls, and they'll make fun of your ears, or voice, or whatever they can find that seems remotely 'off' socially to them). There is very little legitimate woman HATING in the gaming community, and I don't respect the messages being sent out about it.

But yes, it exists. I'd love if media toned down the clickbait about it and really was part of a positive discussion about it, discussions I know I've seen and been part of before. I mean even the supposed 'SJWs' of Bioware actually take a pretty reasonable and respectful take on women both in the industry and their playerbase. We can be civil and accurate and helpful if we want to be. Its too bad that some people don't want to be, and want to rile up people for a problem that by all factual accounts either does not exist, or doesn't exist to the remote degree that they say it does.

Well it doesn't help that people like Anita and Brianna Wu keeps demonsing ALL people (not just the trolls) who disagree with them as harassers. Thus fueling media clickbait portraying gamers as woman haters and making really hard to solve the problem of diversity and sexism in gaming. It's just fustrating that I can't debate with  the females who speak out without being labeled as mysoginst. We should have a peaceful conversation and come up with a reasonable solution. Not shoving certain viewpoints down our throats and say "if you disagree you're a sexist!"
