One day, historians are going to look back at Gamergate and conclude that members on both sides were mentally ill all along.
This "controversy" should never have even been given the time of day.
I can't even be bothered with the details anymore. I just sit back and enjoy the memes and entertainment it brings.
I'm an ex-journalism student with a few articles floating around a couple of print and online pubs, so I actually do care about things like 'ethics in journalism'. Even if it's only vidya journalism. I won't deny though that what's keeping me interested more than anything are the happenings, dank maymays and lolcow milk. It's absolutely ridiculous.
On the greater subject, I like how the SVU episode has gotten people to re-examine the whole issue. The SVU episode is the embodiment of the actual smear going on by the mainstream and gaming press. GG wants to drive women out of gaming. GG have killed two people [there are a few crazies who push this crap], GG have victimised brave womyn, GG are literal terrorists, Obama needs to arrest GG and h8chan, etc.
For the past six months, day after day after day, hit pieces have been written, filmed and produced where the GG side is completely absent, misinterpreted or ignored.
The SVU episode like many others was 'ripped from the headlines'. While most people agree that it was a ridiculous episode, it was also an accurate portrayal of what the media has said GG is. The same people who pushed this narrative are unhappy, because it forces them to recognise how bullshit their bullshit actually is. And, the smear this time was far reaching since it painted all gamers and the industry at-large as being like this.
*holding back tears*
"Women in gaming... what did I expect...?"
Really now.
But it's nice to see people (and developers) start to realise that GG aren't terrorists, misogynists or anything of the like. GG is more akin to an army of anonymous shitposters and OC creators than anything else. And while that presents it's own problems (it's understandably hard for people to take them or their concerns seriously because they 90% of what they do is shitpost and make dank maymays), it's certainly not what the media has made them out to be.
