Maybe. But it'll get better eventually. You aren't seen as a thug if you like rap, or a satanist if you like D&D these days, so gaming will have it's day. Eventually.

Fun fact- Zelda turns you into a wife beater

Well, SVU made it out to seem like all gamers were evil or have the potential for evil so yeah, we've all been painted one color now.

It's not the only time either, nor is it the only Law and Order series to do so.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent had an episode devoted entirely to a killer that killed a female gamer. The female gamer was killed because she was dating a game developer, and his friend (and co-developer) felt like he wasn't appreciated anymore so he killed her (or something equally as inane). There are numerous episodes in SVU that had a male gamer as the rapist/killer/etc as well.

It also doesn't help that many crime shows have their killers be skinny (although there have been instances of fatter ones), white, nerdy, socially inept, video game players (and the list could go on).

It's an annoying stereotype that keeps getting fed by the media.

Yes, when D&D first came out numerous groups tried painting anyone that played it as devil worshipers.

I even preformed a short comedy sketch about it (but it was a video game instead) about the issue. It was hilarious.

It's annoying because the mainstream media has never missed an opportunity to crap on gaming (remember Fox and the Mass Effect stuff) but I would've thought we moved past all these stereotypes by now. Thankfully, most people see how stupid it is. But there are still many who buy it.

Tbh, feels at times that the tv media sh*ts on gaming whenever they can because more & more people are playing games/internet now instead of watching their shows & they feel threatened by it so they demonise the industry & its fans as much as possible

I don't think thats a part of it. I think they'd do it regardless of its success.

Though it IS true that gaming is overtaking television, slowly. I stopped watching TV consistently a LOOONG time ago, but I still game somewhat regularly.

They likely would hate on gaming anyway, but would they take it as far if their tv ratings weren't so threatened by it?

I'm a satanist!?

Somewhere out there is a Geraldo special that was largely considered the principal cause of the association between RPG gaming and satanic rituals. It was a tabloid-style exposé about how games like Dungeons and Dragons often led to satanic pacts, and suicide pacts. I think they cobbled together a couple of sensationalized stories and used all the classic techniques to make it sound like an epidemic problem.

I can remember my mother nervously asking me about it when she found out that I was gaming with friends.

Strangely, years later, when Geraldo's credibility was dragged through the ****ter, I felt a strange sense of satisfaction about it. Dunno why.

And the worst part that caricature was fed to them by the likes of Anita, many games journalists, Brianna Wu etc.
