Lt Kurin probably had the biggest ratio of impact:screen time for me.  The decisions she was forced to make on Thessia were incredibly tough.

I never really got why everyone loves Kal'Reegar so much.  His American-as-apple-pie accent sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the Quarians and - let's face it - he doesn't really DO anything.  Of course, the fact (IMHO, of course) that Adam Baldwin is an intolerant, redneck douche is probably coloring my judgement.  And before you flame me for that last comment, go and check out his twitter page.

Kal'Reegar is played by the guy with the orange hat on Firefly... It is a show about a crew on the run in a ship... Mass Effect is not the only Space Opera I am involved in... Nevermind just forget it.

Speaking as a liberal dude who's not very fond of conservative libertarian types, Adam Baldwin doesn't fit your description at all.

He's a conservative, and a libertarian. But he's not that bad of a guy. As far as social issues go, he's pretty liberal. He has a strong respect for the military (tending to play military characters), and his stances take a lot of political realist positions, which I do disagree with. That said, he's not a bigot, and he's certainly not an intolerant redneck (he's from Chicago after all, one of the more traditionally liberal cities in the US and an island of blue in a sea of red). He's also willing to be respectful to other people's views, and he got along very well with his cast-mates on Chuck and Firefly, all of whom are pretty liberal. Nathan Fillion refers to him as one of his best friends. And you don't argue with Nathan Fillion. He's also willing to poke fun at himself.

As for Lieutenant Kurin, her decisions really weren't that difficult. Get to the temple at any cost. You can do it, or you can complain about it.

I prefer to focus on the task ahead.

I agree with God's sentiment with Baldwin but at the same time also question why Kal was so lamented be the fan community. I liked the character enough but always felt the praise he received online was a bit strange. Though, in all fairness, I felt the same with Anderson. Even before ME3 the fan community acted like Anderson was this father figure in Shepard's life or something. I just never saw it myself so it struck me as odd.

Ditto.

I don't see Anderson as much more than a guy who happened to be you CO once, and who I don't really hold to be that exceptional.

Exactly. That being said I will admit that I did get a emotional hit from Anderson dying in the end. I find the bond they share to be a bit weird and out of the blue (again, I never saw it in ME1-2) but for me they did a good enough job of making me like the character in ME3. I always viewed what Anderson and Shepard had as being mutual respect from one soldier to another. Not buddy-buddy father-son talk. Yet now he's giving me his apartment and teasing I shouldn't make him beg and getting upset when I call him "sir".

Again, personally I didn't mind it too much since I felt ME3 did a good job making me feel some attachment to the guy but I still question why they felt it was necessary in the first place. Despite the fan admiration they were never really close in the first two games. The connection was always more fanfiction material than actual lore. Least, imo.

Look, I don't want to get into an argument about Adam Baldwin - I actually liked him on firefly - but literally nothing I have learnt about him indicates that he is liberal on social issues (like, in any way, shape or form) or remotely respectful of others' views. Like I said, look at his twitter page. Obviously we've heard very different things about him so we'll have to agree to disagree.

And Kurin was being asked by a famous stranger to send her troops to certain death to find some alleged artifact she knew nothing about and had no reason to believe existed, which Shep couldn't really even describe to her and that *might* have helped in the war. Yep, easy decision that one, lol.

It is a shame Shiala has determinant status. If not for that fact it might be interesting to have her as a squadmate in ME:Next, assuming the game is set during or not long after the Reaper War.

The purple version though, not the green.

I agree, the ME1 version of Shiala looked way better then the ME2 version.

My favorites: Glyph, Aria, Tevos, Dr. Michel, Shiala, Emily Wong, Lt. Kurin, Falere, Tela Vasir, Bray

Very easy.

Orders came from up high that she's to hold position for Shepard and get him to the temple.

If I put my company in that spot, they'd hold it for as long as I needed them to to carry out orders. It shouldn't matter whether I believe in it the orders are not. What matters is my chain of command does.

It's a no-brainer decision. We're holding the position and getting to the museum. I wouldn't care if it was the Battalion Commander's prized beagle that we're recovering.

Never got the Kal Reegar thing either to be honest.

Kurin is another great example of an Asari subverting their trope (which I think only really holds from ME1). Such a shame that in ME3 they made the great diplomats and negotiators of the series go against their very culture and previous history by not hosting (or even attending!) the conference for 'reasons'. Still it's ME lore, more changeable than UK weather.

I got Anderson, Miranda and James (in that order) on my last playthrough :) Except I talked to Miranda only twice (via the Spectre terminal and on Horizon) ;)

Since the exteneded cut was released, Anderson will always be the first one and the second one depends on the player's playthrough. I've had Ashley, Thane, Miranda, Mordin, Wrex, edi, James and Liara. The third I've had Samantha, Miranda and Ashley.

Before the extended cut, it was always Anderson, Joker and Liara for me

Mods, man.

That's what I got though. Anderson, EDI, and then MIranda.

Still, beats Joker, Anderson, and... Liara. That was who I always got.

It is a shame that ME1 and ME2 didn't do more to establish the relationship between Shepard & Anderson. Having said I do think the Citadel DLC did a decent job at least on providing some backstory that sets up the emotional farewell on the Citadel. They served together on another ship prior to the Normandy...the Tokyo if I remember correctly.

Anderson made 2 huge sacrifices for Shepard in ME1.

First, he stepped aside to give Shepard command of the Normandy.

Then, he put his career (and possibly life, since it was a capital offense) on the line to free the Normandy from lockdown.

When other Alliance brass (and the Council) were second-guessing Shepard, Anderson was always supportive. I definitely got the father-figure vibe from the guy.

And as soon as he said to Shepard that its up to him/her to stop the reapers, he lost all respect. Him saying that to Shepard meant he turned his back on humanity, the galaxy and Shepard. He never cared. If he did he would have made an effort to find a way to stop the reapers, but instead he sat on his fifth point of contact for 2 years taking the shape of his chair

I never liked Maeko Matsuo because she's a walking stereotype.

All that Shepard-san nonsense was kind of odd. Most Japanese people don't talk that way, particularly if they are using English. I was almost half-expecting her to commit seppuku over the disgrace of having allowed Geth to be snuck onto the station.

It's possible she's speaking Japanese. I doubt more than a handful of people you meet in the game are actually speaking the same language as Shepard. You don't think all the aliens are speaking english, do you? Its a world of universal translators. That could be why the "san" stays in her speech. Certain words may be excluded from the "translate" list. Not sure about James with his random spanish, though.

I didn't. Anderson doing something that counts does not mean that he is a father figure.

I strongly disliked the forced father-figure thing from Shepard. My Shepard didn't need a father figure.

Do you have the extended cut? The only time Joker shows up is before the extended cut was released in the second flashback unless you have a mod.

Before the extended cut came out the flashbacks were Anderson, Joker and Liara/Ashley/Kaidan and if the player did not romance Liara/Ashley/Kaidan, it was Liara that showed up in the third flashback

With the extended cut, Anderson will always be in the first flashback, the second flashback will have whoever depending on the player's playthrough and the third will have the love interest if the player has a love interest
