Would you ever support a game company outside of buying their DLC and games?

Everyone has their favorite gaming company. Say they were to open up something like a Patreon account. Would you donate money there with no strings attached? I see people do it for people who make Youtube videos all of the time, though the general assumption is that the person isn't making a lot of money. Gaming companies are giant entities that spend and make a grip of change all of the time. Bearing this in mind, is it worth it just to support something you like?

I honestly do wonder how much money these companies would make if they allowed people to give them money simply because they wanted to. What do you think?

Depends on the company. One like the guys who did the Zero Escape game I'd practically throw my whole wallet at to support them cause I think they deserve waaaaaaay more recognition then they ever got.

That's a large reason why I typically buy merch and special editions of stuff when possible, just to support the companies more.

I did with Tripwire interactive and their game Killing Floor. I bought most of the dlc a boxed copy of Killing Floor and a t-shirt. In general they have great a great relationship with the community, still support their game and add a pretty steady stream of content. Also, because they are still very much an indy company, when you buy something like a boxed copy, t-shirt or dlc a lot of the money goes right into development of their next game and not into the pockets of some out of touch CEO. That is something I can support.

I'd do that to the old BioWare. BioWare used to be the Best game developer of all times in my opinion.

I don't think I'd donate to a company, no.

Even the most indie of game developers is still a company, much different than a YouTube channel. The goal is to make a product, which is how they secure their revenue. YouTube channels have little-to-no methods of making money outside of incredibly small YouTube ad revenue.

To echo others, I'd buy non-game merchandise and the like if sold separately, but I don't think I'd donate to a company, ever.

Not unless I was extraordinarily wealthy and could make a donation that would make a very strong impact.

Depends on the company.

I recently backed the Kickstarter for Shadowrun: Hong Kong with more money than was actually needed to get the game, because their games are awesome and they're a smaller developer.

I don't know of any major developer like BioWare that I would do that kind of thing for though, just because they really shouldn't be needing help funding their games with EA above them.

No. I tend not to cling to developers, I do support good games though -- Admittedly, I am inclined to throw all of my money at Yu Namba and the rest of Atlus USA for their continued efforts at localizing excellent games from excellent developers.

Are we talking kickstarting or a handout? Because if Big N asked me for a handout out I'd regretfully (I don't want Nintendo to go the way of Sega) have to turn them down. But if they said I could access Nintendo's entire back catalogue on the platform of my choice for couple hundred bucks I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Hell, if Sony and Disney can get along and play nice for Spidey(while, of course, making oceans of money), then maybe it can happen between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. There's a market for Nintendo's games that Nintendo just isn't reaching anymore, but Sony and Microsoft are. I'd kick start the hell out of a project to get every game in Nintendo's back catalogue from GameCube back to NES on Sony and Microsoft's online stores.

Not with no strings attached, no - but I've backed loads of kick starters and some for games I didn't even go on to play...I just wanted to feel warm and fuzzy inside :3

Of course not!

The corporations are only satisfied when you're entirely poor and dead after giving them ALL of your money.

I suppose they'd be overjoyed if you left them money in your will as well.

No.

They're a business. I buy products from them. If I like them enough, then I will invest more money in them to obtain products/content that I otherwise wouldn't buy with other companies. That's the extent of it.

Sure, I'll get attached to certain companies, games and series' but I won't just give my money away for no reason.

This can lead to blind loyalty which in the hand can be more harmful than anything.

Valve would be a perfect example, you have people clinging for Half-Life 3 but the company openly trolls it's fanbase about it and the fans just sheepishly smile and nod while buying $5 hats that do nothing.

Technically I've done it twice with kickstarter campaigns, and one of those I generally regret. So not really.

Absolutely depends on the people, and even then I have reason to believe I shouldn't.

In the end, while they are just people living their dream and doing their jobs, you're doing it because you enjoy their products.

If you would've asked me to do so for Bioware post Mass 1 and Origins, I would've given a resounding yes.

After DA2 and ME3, I would've laughed at you for suggesting it.

Now? I'm of the opinion I should be fair to all, and given how burned I would've felt had I felt like I helped fund these products that disappointed me, I'd be wary of doing it again for anyone, given Bioware had 100% full trust from me. I was in the, "they can do no wrong" camp, which of course led me down the sad path.

Thats more on me though. I've learned better over the years.

Nowadays, I want to help them get better(not just game wise but forum wise, community outreach wise). If the funding would go towards that, then I'd ABSOLUTELY help out. But just out of the blue not knowing where the funds are going? Nah. Playing it safe.

So basically, I'd need to trust the people and have a good reason to reach out.
