One old annoying bug...

Most of us know this bug:

Someone in the party uses a ranged weapon and the AI is allowed to swap weapons.

Whenever the ranged weapon is switched to a melee weapon, all others in the party have this ranged weapon in their hands and in their weapon slot, where it is not removable. Only a save and reload fixes it, at least in most cases.

I know, that this is "only" a visual bug and they still use their weapons.

At that time, when SoZ came out, I've read a comment of Tony K. about this and AFAIR he regretted it, but has not found a way to fix it.

Nevertheless. it is annoying and immersion breaking.

But perhaps someone found a way to fix this or has found a workaround in the meantime?

This is the first I've heard of this bug, but I don't use TonyK's AI.  If this is a bug specific to that mod, which it seems like it might be based on what you say about Tony regretting something, perhaps you should mention that earlier in the post.

i seem to remember this, and iirc it's not unique to Tony's (could be wrong but i recall it from when I first got the game -- and i didn't have Tony's then.. iirc.)

there's also a similar bug where icons switch themselves up randomly on levelup, i believe. I think that's caused by a mod that displays custom armors on the levelup screens -- fix is to go back to the default armor screens.

to mitigate the original bug, just swap a different weapon/shield in and out of the slots ....

I am not certain about what he wrote at this time. Could also be, that it has nothing to do with his mod directly, because it was partially integrated in the game by Obsidian. I really don't remember.

The whole AI weapon switch is wonky. Visual bugs aside, sometimes characters switch weapons too late, don't use the best one available (they tend to favour big weapons and you may be specialised on another type or want a shield, for example) etc.

My "workaround", if you can call it that, is not having the AI switch weapons that much. Every character has a ranged weapon in their inventories, but my frontliners are set to "not switch weapons" or "not use ranged weapons". In the rare case I need them to use one (if I can't reach an enemy or whatever), I can switch manually. Wizards and other squishy characters can be set to switch weapons, because they shouldn't need to do so too often, and sometimes they're also set to run away if attacked in melee. Dedicated archers could deactivate weapon switching as well, although I'd probably make that my main (or just my controlled) character if I wanted one, as I don't think the AI would use Manyshot properly (to be honest, I'm not the best "manyshooter" in the world either, but probably better than the AI).

PS: Not using TonyK's is so blasphemous.

I've heard people say it's better, but I'm pretty happy with how the AI is normally.

I think the bug only manifests when your main PC auto-switches.  I simply (always) disable automatic weapon switching on my PC and leave it active on everyone else and have not seen the bug much at all.  And I have the full Tony K AI but I think I found this workaround before I went full.

The normal settings are still there, but it adds some more options. You can do without many of them, but it's nice to have... well, some more options. :P

It was especially noticeable before SoZ, a patch, or both introduced parts of the mod in the ummoded game.

Maybe. I always deactivate weapon switching on my PC too, and I don't recall having, or at least noticing the bug in a long time. But since I often do the same with some companions, I can't confirm that theory.

Sometimes - but that's rare - it happens, too, when someone else does it.

Example: Elanee. In some games I give her a bow and a scimitar or a spear. When she autoswitches, the bug might occur.

Further, it seems to be correct, that the main "source" of the bug is the main.

For me the AI is one of the major points to play this game (just compare it to DA:I !), so for me it's a pity, that this bug didn't get fixed,
