Ha! Yeah.  I'm getting a masters in speech-language pathology.  We definitely cover ASD.  I had a whole class of "social language" kids in middle school last semester.

 

My silly masters project that I needed the approval for is on foreign accent modification therapy.  It's fun stuff.

We get a lot of those clients at our school clinic because there are a lot of international professors and graduate students who teach.  The undergrads complain that they can't understand what they're saying.  We're looking at what parameters of speech most directly impact that judgment and whether we as clinicians are good at addressing the issues that impact communication, or if we simply acclimate to our clients' speech patterns while an unfamiliar listener (like a first year fresh off the farm) would still have trouble understanding.

 

And that is more information that anyone wants to know, so I put it in a spoiler tag.

 

That's really useful research, especially in multicultural regions like NYC.

 

For example, I was taking a hands-off report for a post-operative patient I was admitting to my unit. I cannot understand the other nurse because of her accent. It's hard to listen to get a detailed report on a patient when you're a new nurse like me. Accents further add barriers to communication of clinically relevant information.

The story is a long one, the short answer is I met her when she was married to a POS that hit her and cheated on her, looking back I do not know if she loved me for me or if I was just the guy there helping her get through her situation. In any case I asked her to marry me but she decided to stay with him for her childrens sake.

 

Believe it or not, there are women (and men I guess) who consider this a likely option on a 1st date...

Yes!  Exactly that.  I worked on professional vocabulary with one of my clients for exactly that reason.  He needed to be able to talk to his colleagues.  And the point is people spend lots of time trying to correct how non English speakers pronounce difficult sounds like "th" or "r" and that's not really what's impeding communication, your brain fill that part in.  It's usually waybigger picture.  You only need to learn specific sounds if you're like accent training to be in a movie.  I mean, Nic Cage has it down to a science.

 

I'm so glad you think it's relevant.  Now I just have to pull the whole thing off in the next 2 months in order to graduate.

Usually it's exposure to multiple languages/dialects/accents.  Their brains get good at separating the language (the message) from the auditory signal (the accent).  Some people just have a talent for it I guess.

Unless that's the set up to a really good joke, in which case I already feel silly for being baited.

Jesus, that's rough.  I tend to think it's better for children to have separated parents who are happy and complete individuals to ones who are together but miserable.  But then I'm sure she was just doing what she thought was right.  Sucks that you had to get the shaft during all of it though.  I'm so sorry for you.

But I understand her putting the kids first. Difficult situation, no winners.

Yeah I do not blame her for it, I just think raising kids in that type of environment isnt good either. but I would never hold it against her
