I only plant things I can eat. It's the only way my husband can get me to do any sort of yard work, with the promise of food at a later date.

I need to know what tomato varieties to plant this year. Two years ago we did better boys, beefsteaks, and heirlooms and we had more beautiful, delicious, ripe, tomatoes than we knew what to do with. Last year we did romas, goliaths (which were godawful), and some other heirlooms and all we got were tiny, sad, flavorless tomatoes that rotted on the vine before ripening, or got eaten by my dog while they were still green. Obviously, the dog situation is an external factor, but I'd like some tips on getting back to better quality tomatoes this time around.

I don't plant, but my mother does. I help out from time to time. We have everything from fig trees and grape vines to various sorts of fruits, vegetables, and herbs in our backyard.
Here's a picture of one of our fig trees from a few years ago-

I've never tried my hand at gardening but when I was little my neighbor had a grape vine running along the fence in my back yard. He would let us pick some each year and make jam. It was delicious!
Also... Bees! They attracted so many bees!

Well help me out with some tomatoes then!
Seriously, how did it change so much from one year to the next. Same place. When and which tomatoes should I plant?

I'm thinking of planting tomatoes and maybe corn (maize for the Brits).
What are you thinking of planting?
Mother has planted some cherry tomatoes before.
She can't get them to go away now. Though that may be due to us having the insane nutrition value that is Illinois soil. We've grown a rose bush and the thorns grew thorns.
Myself, I don't garden, had a bonzai tree a few years back, but a heat wave during a vacation killed it.

As a fan I mean! Having weak spine makes me unable to garden or farm for enough time!

Better boys are exactly right for your zone. (Zone 7b, which is what we are as well.
Go us!). Better boys are insanely popular because they produce decent results for just about everybody. I may be planting some beefsteaks as well. And I love Roma's but have never had luck growing any good ones.
As far as tomatoes go, I can proudly say that I am an expert at the care and feeding of japanese beetles. ![]()

Thank you! I'll go back to the better boys for sure then. That's step one.
Now I just have to figure out how to keep the dog (and bugs) out of them.
