Hardcore rpg fans are no longer welcome in the Mass effect trilogy. Bioware have dumbed down the rpg aspects of mass effect entirely with the sequel and instead opted for a game that will have a wider appeal. Its a very sad day when a rpg developer like bioware wants to appeal to the call of duty generation. Seems we will just have to hope for dragon age now because mass effect is for EVERYONE. Am I the only hardcore rpg fan on these forums or does everbody else like the dumber, simpler mass effect.

I'm a pretty big Bioware fan, but I have found their gameplay to be the most boring aspect of their games for a very long time. I haven't finished downloading the game yet, but if it is faster paced I welcome it over their old stale combat system they've used through KOTOR series.

ME2 is a shooter with some RPG elements.

In my opinion, the combat and inventory were the weakest parts of the first Mass Effect. Is that what your referring to?

I think they have actually made things more complex with the new reloading mechanic. Still not sure how I feel about it though.

The game is awsome but yes it doesnt seem RPGish at, more like GoW in space. I ported my badass full tank build shocktrooper to ME2 and.... now Shocktrooper has nothing special but 10% more HP with no armor specialization. So much for the cover is for ****s philosophy. Wait nevermind the ME2 shepard is a ****.

I think that the most defining quality of an RPG to me is the story and the feeling that I'm having an impact on that story, not the gameplay mechanics that surround it. In this regard, I feel Mass Effect 2 is indeed an RPG. I could care less how many different stats they let me crunch or how many pieces of shiny new equipment I can collect. As long as these strong story elements are present, it's an RPG to me.

Also, to be completely honest, I have a strong aversion to most shooters, but I find myself enjoying the combat and equipment systems much more in ME2 than in ME1.

Technicaly rpg's by there nature are maleable so the fact me2 isnt as stat heavy as the first is actualy still within the bounds of an rpg game...also in order to properly create a scfi style rpg they're gonna have to add shooter aspects since guns are the new bows.

As long as it has a compelling story that draws you in and makes you want to keep playing with elements you can alter based on choices you are offered its still an rpg.

So far I am in awe. Bioware has done it again tbh.  I absolutely love the cinematics of ME2!

Yes, the helmet thing does bother me too. I wish we didn't have to wear that since I'd like to see Shepard when in conversations on the planets.

I see no reason why Bioware needs to make nothing but hardcore RPGs (which I enjoy very much). A good story driven action RPG can be just as enjoyable.

I would not call Mass Effect a hardcore RPG to begin with. It was first and foremost a "Sci-Fi action RPG" just like the sequel.

Who is this "we"? I'm loving this game. I had a hard time turning it off (had to turn it off for Dora The Explorer- I have kids.) This game feels just like ME1 to me, only with better combat, a more streamlined interface / inventory system. It's still every bit the role playing game IMO. Perhaps you're not going far enough out of your way to find side quests?

You mean reducing 12 levels per skill which differ only by adding +1-2% of irrelevancy, to only 4 levels that actually make a difference?

Or getting rid of 100+ armors which you never bothered to use?

ME1 and 2 is a shooter RPG. Deal with it. You knew it before the release.

There's other BW franchise made specifically for old-school RPG players.

Personally I'm a hardcore player, a veteran of BG1,2, Icewind Dale 1,2, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, KotOR 1,2, Fallout 1,2 and many other classic cRPGs. I like ME. It's simplier but it doesn't mean it's worse. It's different. If you don't like this game, just don't buy it. But don't say that ME2 is dumber than ME1.

Shut up OP. lol. Just shut up.

The game's action is better now... so that makes it dumbed down for idiots? Get a life, bro.

This.

Also; I 'm a shooter fan who bought ME1 on release. Get over yourself.

Only if having a start screen is your only thing by which to judge if it's an rpg.

I'm sorry, but Mass Effect was never a hardcore RP game, I haven't received ME2 yet (I's Eurotrash :P) but what I've seen is just as RPish as the original, just without all the fiddling around weapon stats (why would an N7 marine start with zero weaponry skills anyway?).

Speaking as a hardcore RPG fan, I feel perfectly welcome in the Mass Effect games, I just need to wear my roleplay shooter hat... if anything I found Dragon Age more offensive to my roleplayer sensibilities because it makes the offer of RP options, but delivers depressingly few... but again, I wear a different RP hat.

Roleplay comes in many forms... for the moment I'm letting Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale & Baldur's Gate continue to sate my hardcore RP needs and accepting Mass Effect for what it is and always was - a kickass, story driven roleplay shooter.

The RPG elements (inventory management, character progression, etc) have been streamlined into presenting fewer, more meaningful choices instead of being cluttered with incremental improvements and white noise.

While there's nothing wrong with enjoying the oldschool RPG formulas, it doesn't necessarily make Mass Effect 2 a bad game for doing something else. I'm a bit disappointed in the diversity of weapons and armor in this game, and I think it could be improved without making things "too complicated", but lets not pretend that they had very good reasons for the changes they made.

What exactly is dumber about ME2 then ME1?   Please explain.   Please explain how picking the weapons that had bigger damage number of them was smart.

Also neither Dragon Age nor Mass Effect are registered to your profile.    Bioware doesn't cater to pirates, sorry.

I agree. ME2 should've been turn-based with tons of unnecessary menus and indistinguishable stat increases. Oh wait, that sounds awful. If that's what you wanted you should go back to playing some japanese rpg on the Playstation. Just because the mechanics of the game are simplified and a little less confusing doesn't mean it's a bad RPG. Enjoy it for what it is, don't turn gaming into a chore.

We've got DA:O for the hardcore RPG game. ME2 is their answer to all the shooters, but an upgraded one in which I can customize just about everything about my character and actually make choices. They've found a way to bridge RPG's with shooters to give us a virtual orgy of neural stimulation with a creative demeanor. I like it. Alot.
