The game is fantastic, and I have found the RPG elements MORE compelling than the first game. I love the character customization, being able to equip different components of armor, and customize them visually. I love that credits have some value now. It's enjoyable to look through various stores and purchase helpful upgrades.
What exactly is gone that removes the 'RPG' status of the game? The clunky inventory and looting system? You still have an inventory, you customize your armor and weapons before the mission.
I'm a hardcore RPG fan, and i think this game is flawless. Good job Bioware.

Not only did they bring back the great storytelling and character interaction, they actually made different classes play differently. Soldiers and Vanguards play nothing alike etc, adding huge replayability. This is a much better game all around.

The one thing I hate already about ME2 (Granted I'm only a few hours in). The stupid mission complete screens. They totally break the immersion of an RPG.

Surberus, what customization are you talking about exactly. You still upgrade your weapons, pick which type of ammo to fire, and can customize several different pieces of armor for MEANINGFUL stat differences.
None of which can be done on the fly (except for ammo) which means if I face someone/thing I wasn't expecting, I have no way of redistributing my loadout accordingly.
I'm at lvl 10, I have choices between 2 different pistols (all of which get the exact same upgrades), 3 helmets, a few chest pieces, etc. The options are stiffling in my mind. By the end of the game, everyone will be using primarily all the same gear, will all the same upgrades. And yes, that happens in many rpgs, but with so few choices, the available combinations are paltry by comparrison.
Is it better than the system in ME1, I'm not sold on a yes, but I won't say no. ME1's carrying capacity was outlandish, but I enjoyed customizing recoil and the like.
And my main gripe to support all this, that poor Turian I saved early on, who is still stuck in his bullet-ridden armor some 5 levels later because I have no way of changing it. You mean to tell me that a space-traversing, arse-kicking, top notch sniper can't switch out his shoddy, swiss-cheese looking gear, for something that can hold water? Heaven forbid he ever have to go into space cus he's going to get sucked through it faster than I can hit R1.

I'm sure they won't. I actually thought BioWare was pretty much on top already but I guess everybody has different opinions on that.josh42426 wrote...
Dont forget the little people when you get to the top bioware. Your first fans, the nerdy rpg guys.
Really though. What don't you like about Mass Effect 2? Is it really drastically changed from how ME1 played?

This game is RPG. But I guess we all have different ideas of what an RPG is.
Again RPG stands for Role Playing Game. Thats a pretty thin definition.

Hardcore rpg fans are no longer welcome in the Mass effect trilogy. Bioware have dumbed down the rpg aspects of mass effect entirely with the sequel and instead opted for a game that will have a wider appeal. Its a very sad day when a rpg developer like bioware wants to appeal to the call of duty generation. Seems we will just have to hope for dragon age now because mass effect is for EVERYONE. Am I the only hardcore rpg fan on these forums or does everbody else like the dumber, simpler mass effect.
If all rpg's were bound by the "true RPG" rules. It sure would be boring. On that note, who decides what a true RPG is anyway? You? I guess you have a perfect idea of what everyone wants.
This game might appeal to a slightly different group of people. But it's SELFISH to assume only your personal gaming needs should be met.
If you don't like it, go play another game. No one is chaining you to your keyboard and shouting "PLAY" in your ear.
*deep breath* Now that I've finished with my rant...
I felt the need to defend BioWare. They are pc games greatest creative genius. They are willing to break the mold and try something different. When people complain about BioWare "changing" - I find it very odd. The nature of artistic growth is change.
Go for it BioWare!

Like saying "Sandwich standards for sandwiches". A hefty-sounding, yet content-free barrage of words.
I've yet to hear someone come up with a compelling and satisfying criteria of what does and does not constitute a "true" RPG (the general tenets of an RPG are character creation, customization, and story involvement, and those can be accomplished in a variety of different ways). Essentially, this is a way of moaning about not getting an exact copy of a game you played years ago. A handy little demagogical tool, allowing one to sound authoritative without having to put any great deal of thought into what one is actually saying.
The funny thing is, most of the people I've met who describe themselves as "hardcore RPG fans" have never even tried the real thing. Gotta love it when people mix ignorance with arrogance.

Nearly everyone is doing it anyway, even the best of the best.
Nintendo are corporate sellout,no doubt about it...
Capcom has finally decided to sell out as well, nearly scrapping all their niche studio and dumbing down Street fighter which was hardcore(and making shooters or outsourcing IP)...
Square-Enix is desperate to stay mainstream,it's obvious if you look at what they release(milking FF and DQ like crazy as well)...
Blizzard sold out with World of Warcraft, but they are richer than ever...
Valve finally decided to step into the console world and even do a sequel less than a year after the release of Left for dead...
Call of duty, need I say more? Epic games and Lionhead giving up on the PC market...
Crytek done with PC exclusive and dumbing down the tech requirement to be able to put Crysis 2 on console and of course hope to sell 4-5+ million copies...
Ask Ken Levine if he prefer System shock 2 (masterpiece) or Bioshock (dumbed down version of system shock 2) which made him rich?

The KoTOR series was much truer to holding RPG ideals then ME/ME2, both of which fall under RGP lite nothing more nothing less. I'm just finding while I enjoy ME2 for the most part, something is jerking me around about the whole game at this point. Either a lack of actual depth of abilities, or there's no real exploration.QuantumSponge wrote...

I really didn't mind the parts with the mako, the only thing that annoyed me with that were the mountains that were 85° and were a pita to climb over unless you took a 10min detour. And before this place slides further into a pit, and starts sounding more like the cesspool of the internet. I've done the whole P&P crap.

Actually now that I think about it, would it kill immersion to just drop classes altogether and let you build your own?
No, but it would kill difficulty balancing IMO. I find that games that in games that let you build your own class it's all too easy to make god mode builds since the ludicrous number of combinations makes it extremely hard or devs to adjust difficulty. When it comes to rpgs I'm always going to want straight up classes.
