I have a question about animals with the Taint, like Dog from DA:O

Do they hear the Calling just like the Wardens?

They become Ghouls, so presumably, yes, they hear some semblance of The Calling.

As far as I know, The Joining only slows down the Taint - so the difference between Wardens and Ghouls should merely be in the fact that Ghouls take days at most for their Calling to come, while Wardens have twenty, perhaps thirty years from their Joining.

And what about Dog then? Or other Mababi that basically surive the taint like the Wardens do. (the Mabari of those Ash Warriors in Ostagar)

The Ash Warrior in Ostagar comments on this that his Mabari ingesting Darkspawn blood means the end for the poor dog.

As for Barkspawn, he is "cured" but personally, I think that's just a plot device to allow non-human noble Wardens to have a faithful Mabari.

Of course, the "cure" he was given by the Ostagar houndmaster may have worn off eventually, and he was put through the Joining.

Until then, I suppose you could say that the Warden had to give him the "medicine" periodically.

All in all, Warden Dog's survival is a bit of a plot hole, that you can mend with headcanon.

The Ash Warrior leader said that even they will fall to the corruption eventually, if they don't outright die from the blood of their prey (The Darkspawn)

This is probably a much more exact version of what the Ash Warrior says. I can not remember, as it has been some time.

If its not a plot device theres going to be alot of pissed of Wardens when they learn how they went through that extremely dangerous joining pointlessly when all they had to do was ingest a flower XD

From about 2:30 onwards he speaks about the Mabari. After 3 minutes he says:

'Darkspawn blood is poisonous, but not always fatal. Those who survive become immune to it's effects'

Sort of the same plot device that allows your companions who are not Grey Wardens to seem immune to the taint when fighting Darkspawn alongside you. Lol

At least with them you can say "Hurr lucky never got scratched by the Spawn"

The Mabari, unless Human Noble (where the same applies), is guaranteed to have been tainted before.

Lol Sten and Zevran covered in blood all the time can't say that to me! Not all that blood spilled is from the darkspawn.

I always wondered that about my mabari. Especially when he tackles a darkspawn and proceeds to eat out its insides.

The squad members are really dodgy indeed, but the Mabari being tainted and surviving it is actually a thing Dragon age; Dog from a non human noble and the Ash Warrior's dogs as shown in the vid.

Hence my question about the Calling

Since being tainted and surviving gives the Mabari the same effects as the Wardens (becoming immune to the Taint, i.e. not die from it), I'd suppose they do hear the Calling. But it'd be nice to know for sure :P

Yeah and it would have been cool to have an option to have your mabari sense the darkspawn like you do, but way before you do so you can prepare! I bet they hear it too. It would make sense, unless it has something to do with them being animals and not human, so it affects them differently, like a dwarf,

Ow! True.

Also, the original plan for Landsmeet, as I recall, was to have all of your companions contract the taint during the game, so Riordan would make all of them Grey Wardens.

Well, at least in Leli's and Morrigan's case, it makes sense they never contracted the Taint... At least in my case. Morrigan is a Mage, and Leliana was an Archer. And the fact I had Morrigan run around with a sword as an Arcane Warrior? Fade blah blah blah half way in the Fade something something can't blah blah blah epic win.

That would have made more sense, like in DAA when everyone who joins you, must drink the blood first. I know maybe Qunari could be more resilient to it, but Zevran is an elf and a rouge and if my Dalish elf can get tainted, how is he free of it? Lol

Wow. Well, I must say this makes sense - at least we know where the Grey Wardens started to create their joining. However - it definitely seems like there is some spontaneous joining, among the Mabari at least... Now I wonder if you could destroy an archdemon by having "immune" mabari deal the final... bite?

"A grey warden must die and destroy his soul to kill the Archdemon! Or your tainted in his first battle mabari can do it, that works too."

I suppose it should work, cause I don't see any difference between Dog or the Ash Warrior's dogs that surive the Taint and a Grey Warden, from what little information there is.

Game doesn't let you though. And wouldn't that have been the greatest cop out ever? :P Alistair alive, Warden alive, no Dark Ritual, dead Dog :P

Hey. Some people loved the Dog!

Morrigan definitely preferred it to Alistair, for example :D
