I was just chatting to Varric in Haven about Bianca, expecting to feed me a bunch of rubbish then he went and said this....

I have never got him to say this before and I have no idea how I got him to.
I would have thought that too bu this is only the second time I spoke to him, the other time I asked him about the red lyrium. I did destroy one red lyrium vein though I am not sure if that would give me enough approval.
But wait - there's more... ![]()
He is sworn to secrecy but names his famous crossbow after her? Unless Bianca was telling the truth when she told you many dwarven women were named that... though I had never noticed.

This happened to me yesterday for the first time.
I had just started at Haven, so approval was low.
I figured out I have done at least two things different, maybe you did one as well and that's what it could be.
In the prologue just after I met Varric and Solas, after killing the demons on the ice I carried on past the burning house and killed the three demons at the end of the path, he then went into some dialogue about me being from the Free Marches, or this time round I am playing a devout Andrastian and took the thumbs up option when Cass said the maker sent me to them, maybe he is scared I might set the wrath of the maker onto him if he lies. Other than that I am at a loss.
I think the reply to that question is randomly selected from a small pool of possible replies. So far I've talked to him twice and he gave me a different nonsense answer both times. Rather amusing, really. It's interesting that he possibly can be so frank this early on ... and yes, naming the big flashy special crossbow after the person who must not ever be publicly linked to it or him might not have been the smartest move. ![]()

You'd almost think the writers didn't think this through very clearly...

Maybe he just likes to make people beg him for an explanation then give the mysterious, I can't say, answer lol

Or you miss the fact everytime he asked who his crossbow is named after he normally lies about it.

It's the perfect way to hide the truth, though - be so known for making up all sorts of BS, you can slip in the truth and no one will believe it.
I mean, that's probably more of a moment where the writers were more playing on the player's expectations than the Inquisitor's, so that we'll hear something and, knowing that Varric's said it's the one story he'll never tell, we won't believe him, but that's exactly the kind of thing that Varric is known for.

I was playing a qunari who was like, "Maker's Chosen? lolno"
I'd say it's random but that option might have the lowest probability of appearing.
The first time I heard him say that was with my (first) Cadash, so I *thought* that was the reason. Dwarf solidarity and all that jazz. Then he said it with my new Trevelyan, so I'm not sure what triggers him telling the truth.
That would kinda make sense, them both being surface dwarves and all, but IIRC he never had much love for the Carta in DA2. I know he and Hawke sure killed quite a few Carta thugs anyway, especially the ones who just kept falling from the skyThe first time I heard him say that was with my (first) Cadash, so I *thought* that was the reason. Not to mention the fact it was the carta who forced them apart. I would think telling a member of the carta the truth would risk you know...getting him killed lol.

That makes sense too, heh. Guess Cassandra was right, and Varric really is Andrastian at heart, which explains his faith in the Herald, no matter what their race.

Bianca is a common name among Dwarven women, remember? That and Helga.

I though it was perfectly clear that Bianca the crossbow was named after Bianca the Dwarf. In honor of the girl Varric loves but can't have because of reasons...
Well of course we know better! But he does like to tell some elaborate lies when you ask him about the name. This is what I got in my current play through when I asked:
I've heard that line a few times, but don't remember if there were any special question options (star options.) I think he opens up even a little more later, too, after his personal quests are done.
