I have killed 7 out of 10 dragons and I cant seem to kill these last 3. Sandy Howler, Kaltenzahn and Highland Ravager, been stuck on em for days!

I am a level 21 Knight Enchanter playing in Nightmare mode, my group consists of Cassandra, Solas and Varrick.

Basically I have no problem getting the dragons to half health, but when the dragonlings come thats when I die. Usually when they come out I am the only one alive or there is someone else with me. I quickly start swinging at the dragonlings as soon as they come out and all of the sudden I cant keep my barrier up and they kill me. If I try to kite them around so they dont hit me then another pair of dragonlings come out and I can never hit the dragon from that point on.

I have seen almost every video of KEs soloing all of the dragons but I just cant do it. The dragonlings are harder than the actual dragon! It seems I do no damage to them and they hit too hard. I cant rely on my party memebers because they are dead for almost the entire fight.

My build is the following:
Spirit - Barrier, Guardian Spirit, Mind Blast, Revival
Storm - Energy Barrage, Conductive Current
Inferno - Immolate(upgraded), Flashpoint, Pyromancer, Clean burn, Chaotic Focus, Fire Mine(upgraded)
Winter - Fade Step
Knight Enchanter - Spirit Blade, Combat Clarity, Fade Cloak (upgraded), Resurgence, Fade Shield, Knight-Protector

My gear:
Staff of the void, Superior Inquisition Scout Hat, Superior Battlemage Mail, Belt ( superb resistance to whatever is needed) Enhanced chain lightning ring and enhanced fire mine ring, Superb amulet of willpower.

Please help!

Have you tried to replace Varric with a tank warrior for the fights?

Varric using Hail of Arrows is a better dragon killer than your entire party combined, provided he's built right and Bianca is upgraded.

Mighty Offense Tonic helps too.

The dragonlings are on a cooldown, so the faster you kill the dragon, the less of them you'll face.

You're already a very defensive class, so ditch Cassandra and Solas.

Grab Cole and Sera instead. Manually control the rogues so that mark of death does as much damage as possible. Your KE is going to contribute diddly-squat to the fight (KEs and warriors are actually a poor choice against dragons, as most of their abilities focus on killing/defending against many small enemies), so just let them do whatever. A spirit blade does a couple hundred damage against guard, vs. 5 or 6 thousand per arrow or dagger autoattack, and then several tens of thousands when Cole triggers mark of death.

If your rogues aren't doing several thousand damage per autoattack, make them some better gear and make sure at least one of them can apply the Sundered effect. Varric's crossbow should have full Great Bear Hide upgrades for the crit chance. You'll want to spend most of your time controlling Cole so that he stealths before his big attacks (for guaranteed crits), and to move him out of the way of kicks/breath.

Is that more microing/pausing? Yes. But I guarantee you'll kill the dragons faster with some microing and teamwork, vs. trying to whittle away at them as a KE when your entire team is dead.

You need to kill the Highland Ravager BEFORE the dragonlings appear. You can kill it in 1 minute or less, this video explains how:

I had a similar experience when fighting Sandy Howler on Nightmare during my last playthrough. The first time was disastrous as three party members were killed and Cassandra the last one standing - and she was pretty much swarmed by Dragonlings, making the fight impossible to finish.

The second time went much better, but that is with a lot of offensive powers. Cassandra basically keeps Sandy Howler focused on her, while my DW Rogue is using a Mighty Offense potion and Mark of Death - after which she used Hidden Blades and Mark of the Rift while Sera used Thousand Cuts. When Mark of Death was triggered, Sandy Howler was basically dead. Guess my point is to recommend having lots of powers giving lots of damage.

Also, you don't mention using elemental resistance potions, so that's another recommendation. They have long duration as well so should last for the entire fights.

The secret is Blackwall with his specialization, and don't forget full taunt and challenge. You can set shield bash, taunt, and challenge to preffered. You basically need to always keep all dragons focused on your tanks/main character. I beilieve it is mostly their annoying AOE attacks or flying that gets you. Also never leave your tanks alone, sometimes you gotta go attack the dragonlings/dragon to get their attention. Also don't choose the reduce threat skill for your main character. You need the dragons to come after you and Cassandra/Blackwall. Solas's specialization is good for weakening enemies and bosses. Always make him and Varric hold postion at the flank and far from a dragon. Varric needs stealth and reduce threat. If the dragon steps on the ground and flashes immediately slam it with a full shield(make sure to have the upgrade of it) when its armor comes on. Start focus on the front legs, if you go to its back the dragons will always knock you back. the battle will be slow but with micromanagement you can win. also i like to prevent varric and my mages from using powerful skills on the dragon. you gotta do it yourself once they at a distance or they have barrier on. also learn the queue for when the dragon flaps its wings for the inwards wind skill. ANYONE outside the eye (beside the dragons legs and within its wingspan) of the storm will be damaged. bring along rock armor potions, regenerate potions, and life bomb potions, all of which must be upgraded to levels where they heal characters next to the user or even help revive team-mates. I once fought the lightening dragon in the coast using level 15 characters and only Blackwall was left. It took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to kill it using Blackwall alone. Preperation is key. All the best :D

Andraste's blighted kneecaps...

"My entire team died, and I had to fight alone" is literally the worst recommendation someone could give for a tank.

You could have done that fight much, much faster with Varric alone.

True, but I prefer long tactical battles similar to Dragon Age Origins. I purposely do not allow Varric or other characters their breach skills. Things are more fun that way. I don't even carry resistance potions into battle. I prefer to make pauses, assign skills and attacks, and reposition my party around the battlefield. Inquisition is easier compared to Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2, I am just making it more fun by making things harder in Hard mode. I don't have the time or patience to play in Nightmare with the way the rogue class has no dodging at all :D

It's incredibly cheap, but you could replace Varric with Sera, and then use the Flask of Fire/Thousand Cuts trick. Flask of Fire prevents the loss of Focus, as well as Stamina, allowing her to use Thousand Cuts twice in a row. It might not kill the dragon, but it shouldn't have much health left, if it survives.

There's nothing at all tactical about making a fight much longer than it needs to be.

And for Varric, dodging is unnecessary since he can simply overwhelm enemies with Hail of Arrows.
