Anyone ever specced Sera for daggers? Or Varric for daggers, for that matter? How does it work out for you?

I specced Sera for daggers in my first playthrough, since I was playing an archer and wanted some variety. I thought she did fine with them, though admittedly I play on casual and I didn't use her much once I got Cole. It's definitely an option, at least on lower difficulties.

 

It's not something I would do every playthrough, but three archers was overkill.

The A.I isn't smart enough to play the daggers in the way it's meant to be played on anything above normal. They don't always flank and don't synergize their skills either.

 

A dagger build that would make a human controlled character unstoppable, only makes an A.I controlled character a potential liability. Sometimes they get it right but more often then not, they rush in, unload everything and then get killed, without really making to big of an impact.

I actually find Sera's specialization to be the most effective of the AI-controlled dagger rogues. As long as she's cycling through her flasks well (and she should if you set them all on preferred), she has much better survivability than either Cole or Varric. AI doesn't really do subterfuge all that well so the tempest's playstyle or wading into battle and just hacking away actually works for her.

As a melee rogue, Sera is actually really good provided her flasks are set to preferred.

 

Personally I give her Parry as well because AI is really good with it.

Seriously though, AI uses defensive skills like Evade and Parry well but Sera needs to be micromanaged during Flask of Fire to get the most out of it.

 

Throwing Blades is probably the best skill to use during this time or Deathblow.

I thought Varric was still in a state where he wouldn't wield anything but Bianca.  Not that I've tried. he's safer and lives longer out on the edges of the fight.
