I thought I might be interesting to compare notes with the rest of you about this.

I’ve been on the forums long enough to know that whatever character you mention – there will always be masses that passionately LOVE and bitterly HATE the same character.  So let’s not turn this thread into a love-hate thread, okay?   What’s your pairing?

Alistair - James,Kaidan

Duncan   - Garrus,Thane

Flemeth  - Mordin

Leliana  - Liara,Kelly,Tali

Loghain  - Ilusive Man

Morrigan - Marinda

Oghren   - Zaeed,Grunt

Shale    - EDI

Sten     - Wrex

Wynne    - Samara,Chakwas

Zevran   - Joker

-- I can't seem to relate DAO with these --

Ashley

Jack

Jacob

Kasumi

I would switch Alistair and Duncan. Alistair is more like Garrus, he also always has a funny one-liner and is "the buddy" for a male shepard. Duncan is a lot more serious.

Rest looks good, only Miranda/Morrigan isn't really fitting.

Yes, that's better!

Also Sten is probably more like Javik

I'd probably compare Flemeth to the Illusive Man, and Loghain to Seran. I actually think that Morrigan compares to Myranda quite nicely. They both come off as "ice queens" at first, but as you get to know them, they are both deep, and interesting people, who are very passionate. Duncan definitely doesn't fit Garrus. Duncan is much to serious. He is more of an Admiral Anderson. He is a friend, but comes off as more of a mentor who helps you on your path.

Well, in my opinion Miranda is more "good" than Morrigan. She cares about her family (something Morrigan doesn't acknowlegde) and tries to save innocent people in ME 3. Morrigan is a really selfish character. She doesn't appreciate helping others and even if the Warden can get her to love him, she'll always leave him for her own goals. I agree Morrigan is a deep character, but clearly more evil than Mirranda.

Morrigan's character develops a bit more over the span of the trilogy. If she romanced the Warden, and had his child, then she shows a deep compassion for her family in Inquisition. "Good" is all a matter of perspective I suppose, I think that they are both shady, beautiful women, who care deeply for what they love.

I had exactly the same thoughts.   If you recall early in ME2, there was a reference to Miranda as the "ice queen".   Both are attractive, sexy, intelligent, driven but emotionally detached...and for obvious reasons:  Morrigan is a witch and Miranda was cloned.    As I played DAO the first time, I said to myself "wow -- this is Miranda all over again".   Granted, Miranda lovers think she can do no wrong.  On the ME thread, I mentioned that I'd rather have Miranda as a friend rather than a lover.

Probably Duncan would better pair with Thane.   Neither show much emotion and are deadly serious about everything.

If you include other DA games and not just DA:O...Varric & Garrus

Both are laid back jokesters with dry senses of humor, and both get the canon bro treatment. Although with Varric that's more with Hawke in DA2 than with the Inquisitor.

Have to agree with you there. Varric does seem to be the "bro" of the series. I wonder, who would Ogrhen be in the Mass Effect Universe?

I know we were supposed to be comparing origins characters but I think Liara is more like Merrill. Both are socially awkward (Leliana definitely isn't). They both study ancient history. Both are kind but have a dark side and they both have powerful magic. I think it's uncanny really.

Oghren would either be a Grunt or Wrex for me as he's a bit like a hot headed Krogan

While Leliana isn't socially awkward when you first meet her I think she is a better comparison for Liara, since the two share very similar character arcs. Liara's transition from archaeologist to Shadow Broker mirrors Leliana's hardening and her transition from Chantry nun to Left Hand of the Divine.

The only thing Merrill and Liara have in common is some degree of being socially awkward when you first meet them. But even with that there are large differences. Liara is just an introvert used to working alone, while Merrill often comes across as completely clueless no matter the context. Merrill's not just an introvert, she's socially inept, and presented as being somewhat of an airhead as well. That differs from Liara, who as a scientist, is arguably one of the more intelligent companion characters in the Mass Effect series.

yeah Merril's probably a little moer like Tali really I'd asy sweet and confident in her abilities a little too Over confident I think. Which leads to her naïve problems she faces in DA2.

Leliana was a bard before she met the Warden the only reason she was a chantry sister was because she was in hiding so I don't think the comparison is that great. To me hardening Leliana is just her going back to her true nature (even if you don't harden her she becomes left hand to the divine). But yes both Leliana and Liara become more jaded and harsh in their later games.

I disagree about pretty much everything you said about Merrill. One of the reasons Merrill gives for being socially awkward with Hawke is that she isn't used to being around humans, Liara makes the same confession to Shepard. As you say Liara's other reason for being socially awkward is that she's spent a lot of time on her own at dig sites etc. One of the first conversations you have with Merrill she tells Hawke she's never been good at making friends, she was first to the Keeper so while the other elves her age were having fun she would be doing research etc. So I think both characters are introverts who come out of their shells after meeting the PC. As for Merrill being an airhead, well I couldn't disagree more. She may lack common sense (and to be fair that is one way she differs from Liara) but she's certainly not stupid. She's spent years researching elven history and elven magic she basically is an archaeologist. In regards to their work both women are determined (some may even say obsessed) and both have a mother (or mother figure) who disapproves of what their doing.

I know he's not in Origins but for me Varric would be a good match for Garrus in many ways I consider him to be very much like the DA equivalent
